Hi Phil - problem nearly solved I think. I agree with Margaret it is likely that Francis was registered in his mother's maiden name. I too found the marriage for William in 1848 which could have been after Francis was born. I followed the census from 1871 - 1901 for Eliza and William Gresham . In 1901 Eliza is shown as Elizth but her address is still in Naan Street (no.17). In the household below (no.18) is a Francis - occupn. tailor but I could not make sense of the surname it looked like Walsworth ot Watsworth - ancestry have deciphered it as Vatsworth. I could not find any earlier entries for anything like Walsworth ot Watsworth. Sooooo... Margaret's Cotsworth looks to be the one to go for. I know that my father in law had to produce a birth certificate for his apprenticeship when he was 16 and as a result he was registered at that stage in 1927 - born 1911. Maybe Francis discovered at this stage the name he was registered under. Happy hunting. According to the 1851 Census Francis was lodging with his parents William & Eliza with the Whitelaw family at Barrow on Humber. His age is noted as 3 and born "City, Lincolnshire". In 1861 he was apprenticed to Thomas Axtell in Lincoln, age 13 and Lincoln is his birthplace. I can't find any record of his birth, baptism or death. Francis's brother, William, my great grandfather, named his eldest son Francis, who in turn named his son Francis and so on down to my eldest nephew. I think Francis (b 1848) died young and William used the name is honour of his brother. Any help tracking down the fate of Francis will be much appreciated.
