    1. [LIN] 1911 Census summary books
    2. Peter HOLMES
    3. G'day from Western Australia, By accident I discovered on Ancestry that the above are available. (I don't know for how long they have been so, but that is not important.) When looking through them they are sorted in such a way as that they work around the civil & ecclesiastical parishes within the county. However, they may not be including all streets etc in a parish which is confusing me. According to the Donington 1911 census on Find My Past my gt grandfather John Walter DAVISON lives in (#9) Church Street, Donington with wife, 2 children and 3 of his butchery shop assistants. However, my research so far on Ancestry through the census summary books for Donington does not include Church Street and the family home. Any ideas in which enumeration district etc could I find the family home? SECONDLY, for places like "Surfleet, (St Leonards)" each property is given a reference number - seemingly running between 1 & 142 - but the images of the pages are confusing me. For example, I've got copies of references 1 to 19, 1 to 21, 22 to 46, 47 to 70, 23 to 47, 48 to 59, then a gap until 71 to 94, 95 to 118, 119 to 130 then a gap to a single reference 142. The same sort of pattern is evident for other enumeration districts also covering Surfleet - starts at 56 & has 3 images to 109 - Gosberton St Peter & Paul - 1 to 25 & 68 to 92 Should I be looking elsewhere for the missing images? FINALLY, then the books were scanned it looks as though some one took the staple out of the spine and then copied the folded out "sheet" which therefore displays an image form the start of the booklet and one from the end portion! It took me a while to work that one out. Some sets of images for an enumeration district include 12 images yet others have only 2 or 3 images. I wonder if some sheets were omitted during the scanning or were "lost" back closer to 1911? Peter Holmes Western Australia. [RYLOTT & WITHERINGTON (Anwick, N & S Kyme, N & S Rauceby, Surfleet, Gosberton Clough etc., Spalding)] [RYLOTT (Ontario Canada & some in New York & Florida USA)] Villages are in Lincolnshire unless stated. 3. Peter, The summary books are also available on FMP. If you click on 'view image', then at the top of the image page you will see several boxes, five of which come under the heading of 'enumerators book images'. The one labelled 'list' will give you the page Ancestry refer to as 'census summary book', and which is basically a list of the the neighbouring buildings, be they houses, shops, pubs, churches, etc. If they're habited then the name of the first-named householder on the individual census schedule for that building is given. The big hint is when searching on Ancestry is that most householders are listed in the summary/enumerator books by their surname plus either/or their initial and title as in Mr/Mrs/Dr, etc. So if you search for John Davison in Donington you'll get zilch results. But if you search for Davison living in Donington you'll actually get two results. As regards what you think are page numbers in Surfleet (St Lawrence, by the way, not St Leonard), they are schedule numbers and from what I can see you have two numbers because they are in two different enumeration districts - namely numbers 5 and 6. http://www.findmypast.co.uk/helpadvice/knowledge-base/1911census/index.jsp#references explains the different 'parts' of the census reference number. What doesn't help is that the references on Ancestry bear no resemblance to the actual census reference. For instance there's a J Baker living in Surfleet civil parish and Ancestry say the piece number is 1167, but that refers to the enumerator's book, and not to Mr Baker's individual PN number, which consists of 5 digits. 3. Hi Peter Ancestry have the enumerators summaries (RG78) these are indexed, very usefully with addresses But Ancestry also have the 1911 schedules (RG14) these are being transcribed and so far Wales, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are transcribed the rest are in progress Select Census & Electoral Rolls from the search menu at the top Scroll down and select 1911England Census (not the 1911 England Census Summary Books) You can navigate to the County then place you are looking for Remember the schedules are two sided Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > By accident I discovered on Ancestry that the above are available.
