Hi Peter Just had time for a quick look, but found Elizabeth not Cornelius 1861 RG9/3527 (surname spelt Shephard) listed in Parish cottages in Reedness as Head (wife crossed through) and Married with 3 children. Hannah born 1852 in Whitgift Yorkshire, John Young Sheppard born 1855 in Sunderland Durham, and Godfrey aged 3 born 1858 in Reedness. Elizabeth is listed as a field labourer Elizabeth is listed in 1881 in Reedness RG11/4700 listed as a widow. John Young Sheppard is also in Reedness with wifes Sarah Ann and a daughter RG11/4703 in 1891 Elizabeth once again listed as a widower is living with her son john in Hook Yorkshire he is also a widower and working as a nightsoil labourer (this was a horrible job it was a man with a cart and a shovel who went round the city and shovelled up the "left overs" in the street and then sold them as compost makings to farmers to make a living.) RG12/3873 I will see if I can find anything further on Hannah or Godfrey but it would seem to me that Cornelius has left the family home probably deserted them, or perhaps gone overseas to make a new life and to send for them later, wasn't this the time of the gold rush? hope this is a help to be going on with Elaine Westaway Hampshire UK ________________________________ From: Peter Evans <pev92491@bigpond.net.au> To: eng-lincsgen@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, 25 November 2011, 8:17 Subject: [LIN] CORNELIUS SHEPPARD Hello, CORNELIUS SHEPPARD born Reedness 1825, married Elizabeth Young 1850 Goole, she died 1904 at Keadby. 1851 Census Reedness , Cornelius 25 a Ferryman. Hi Elaine, Peter & LIsters ! A nightsoil labourer did not just go round sweeping up what the horses and cows might have left behind - he also had the even more unpleasant task of emptying out cesspits before sewers were invented and built ! Nowadays this is usually carried out in rural areas by large tanker lorries with a hose and suction pump. Best Wishes ! Roger. ---------------------- On 25 Nov 2011, at 09:16, elaine westaway wrote: > Hi Peter > Just had time for a quick look, but found Elizabeth not Cornelius > > 1861 RG9/3527 (surname spelt Shephard) > listed in Parish cottages in Reedness as Head (wife crossed > through) and Married with 3 children.
