You heard right Peter. How an individual copes is very much down to the person and the £'s available. Also upgrading your system may (I say MAY as a non-IT person) deny you direct access to photos saved on a previous system, this happened to me. What I do is save the originals individually in a pocket made for postcards which is meant not to allow the pictures to change too much. Time will tell on that one. I'm doing some research for a cousin whose family lived at Friskney. They were Robert Stones and his wife Ann (haven't found her name yet). Ann was alive in the 1841 census but dead by the 1851. I found that there was a burial of an Ann Stones at All Saints, Friskney on the 6 May 1849. The age given is a few years older than the census but I know that the 1841 census was rounded up and down. I know that her husband Robert was buried there in 1882 and I was wondering if anybody has monumental inscriptions for Friskney that would possibly have these two people recorded, hopefully on the same headstone. Thanks, Fraser Watson, NZ

The FreeREG entry has an incorrect year date for Ann Stones' burial. It should be 1849. http://www.lincstothepast.com/Records/RecordDisplayTranscript.aspx?oid=543063&iid=254245 I have advised FreeREG of the error. Fraser, many of the entries that you find on FreeREG and/or FMP can be viewed online at http://www.lincstothepast.com/home/ Do read the 'help' section, especially the bit about viewing the PRs, in order to get the most from the site. There are restrictions on some registers, mainly no marriages 1837+, but for those we have the wonderful http://mi.lincolnshiremarriages.org.uk/ as part compensation. We are ahead of you there Lou; Vernon and I spent about four happy but frustrating months leading up to last Christmas dealing with slides, negatives, and rolls of film. Over 53 years of marriage I had collected a very large box of negatives, (the photographs were a different winters project many years ago, and went into 46 albums). I have no idea why I saved the negs, just couldnt bare to throw them away I suppose. Although my scanner can deal with negs, slides and rolls of films, we had amassed a bewildering variety of strips, singles, rolls of negs in many different sizes, so we bought a small gadjet which did the job. We had about 50 boxes of slides to tackle, it is many many years since the projector came out. Vernon got very adept at using tweezers to tweek the negs, we discarded views and people we no longer knew etc;, spent 6 to 7 hours some days, but the job was finished in time to compile Memory Sticks for our three married children. Not sure if they wanted pictures of our Honeymoon in 1959, but all three of them got the same photographs. Each one dated, as close as we could remember, and brief description. It was a huge job, I was really glad of the help, but the task revealed many photographs we had never seen before, also turned up photographs which have enriched our family history. The job prompted a lot of memories, and chats of 'life back then'. I bought proper storage containers, now slides, negs, films are labelled and safely stowed away together with the projector, hand held viewers etc; all in the same place. Not that future generations will bother about them, but we are basking in a rosy glow of a good job done. Now I need to do a similar exercise with family photograph albums and loose photographs various relatives have given me to take care of after relatives have died. I seem to have become the family custodian of such things. I 'will' tackle scanning making Memory Sticks 'one day', but having a break first. Pat in Grimsby, Lincs ________________________________
Good luck to you, Bob. I hope all goes smoothly. I just revised my will today and signed the new version in front of my lawyer. Here, in the States, the lawyer is required to ask you a few questions to determine if you are "of sound mind". This is to prevent problems later if someone contests the will. I suspect this is probably true in most English-law countries. She also told my that one of her clients is executing an estate and one of the sons has taken all the family photos "captive" until he gets what he thinks he deserves as an inheritance. I blurted out, "Selfish %#@$ard!" and she smiled and said, "Yes. But the judge can set him right, if need be." Gee, I hope our readers have put all their old photos on DVD and made copies for the kiddies. Many thanks Diana... . we looked at that Ethel M.. and concluded that she was most probably the Ethel May born in Scarborough Jun. Q. 1893... 'ours' was just Ethel as far as we know. The problem is she gave birth to a daughter in 1913, but this child was brought up by her paternal grandparents and it wasn't until she was 14 that she was told her mother was dead...... it seems very unlikely that Ethel had died...certainly there is no record.. we just think she was 'dead' as far as the family was concerned. Her husband was 7 years older than her, and at best this was a 'honeymoon' pregnancy !! Our best guess is that she ran off with A. N. Other .... but who ?? Thanks again. Just to remind those of you who have already made a will. Does it need updating? Is it some years since you did it? perhaps circumstances have changed since then, give it a look over and see if it is all still relavent. Are people mentioned it now deceased, have you new children, grandchildren, etc;. Do you still have all the things/money you that you decided to bequeath to family and friends. I think mine/ours is still relavent, but I will make sure. Pat in Grimsby, Lincs ________________________________

Pat raised a good point about looking over your old will to see if it stands "the test of time". While you are confronting your mortality, let me add that if you make an "on death" list of things to go to certain people when you go to meet your ancestors, make sure to give a copy of that list to your executor. Now, the list isn't legally binding and your executor can sell your beer glass collection at a boot sale if she likes, but if you discuss it with them, they might feel obliged to follow your directions. In my experience, the biggest problem is the children who will descend on your house, strip it of anything valuable and toss the rest in the dust bin, including your family history notes. Sorry, but it's true, Just ask around. I had a friend who went into hospital for a few months and her daughter, expecting her mother to die, threw away all of her mother's photographs, clothes, books and momentos. She also cleaned out mom's bank account. Aren't kids wonderful? So have someone you TRUST take your keys and keep things safe for you. After all, it would be nice to have something to wear when you get home from the hospital. I hope your hospital gown isn't as drafty as mine! :-) Lou
