    2. Nivard Glad you mentioned putting names on photos. I just hope everyone does this and put the real names on including maiden names. I have come across numerous trees on Ancestry with photos and names such as mum dad uncle Tom etc these are only of us to the immediate family. I not only add names but also the years they lived like 1895-1950 Last year I was asked to scan 100's of photos by my old school. Not one of them had a name so in reality they were all meaningless. Fortunately the school has an old pupils forum and I posted the photos there and came back with lots of names. I then added these to the photos. When there were a large group of pupils I gave them a number extended the photo size to include a column to put the names against the number. For large family gatherings one could do the same The school is delighted to have all these names. It so happened that when I went there to download the photos from a memory stick they had a letter from an old boy who was on one of the photos so they called it up and now know what he looks like Sorry gone off a bit the school example can apply to family members Victor Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device -----Original Message----- From: "Nivard Ovington" <ovington1@sky.com> Sender: eng-lincsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2012 18:33:27 To: <eng-lincsgen@rootsweb.com>; Baz Willy<spadga19382000@yahoo.co.uk> Reply-To: eng-lincsgen@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LIN] PHOTOS Old put on Cd 19.04.12 Hi Joan There will be people out there who have yet to start out on the rocky road of research and will be delighted when and if they happen upon your photos and information (imagine if we could come across this cache of wonders left by our ancestors) If you have anyone out there, relatives or any sort, consider burning the photos and things onto a CD or DVD and send them a copy, if there are several copies out there the chances are that one at least will survive Scan the huge binder if you can and include those too It would also be quite handy to know there are copies out there in case you lose your data :-) Re photos, I have been gradually been adding names and dates to mine but its a slow process, so I have come to the conclusion that its better to do a master file of all photos and give a copy to each of my children, some are named and some are not but its better than me losing them Because some of the photos include them and their siblings they seem to be a bit more interested in the others, at least more than "Oh more dead people" which is the normal response <vbg> Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) >I do have my family tree in hard copy in a huge binder, and also on a memory > stick, but when it comes to photographs, I have some in albums, some on a > couple of CD's, some on a memory stick, trip photos still on a camera card, > and some photos on my C drive. 3. G'day from another part of down unda! I could t=be wrong, but I've heard that the quality of images & data on CD/DVD can "rot" after about 5 years so just like our police force do, perhaps its worth regularly replacing the copies onto another CD. Perhaps memory/USB stick drives could be a better way. Of if you have more than say 8gb of pictures etc then an external hard drive could be a more viable option. I have used FreeBMD for years but did not know about FreeReg. Since Findmypast indexed the BMDs I have been using theirs instead. Thanks again, Fraser Dunedin. 3. Hi, Peter,     These days, there are Internet companies that will sell you online storage space.  You can also arrange with a relative or neighbor to "swap" some space.  "I'll store yours if you store mine."  That way, if you accidentally set your house on fire, it will just be your neighbors backup that burns."  I used to keep my backups at work, but when I retired, that option went away.     Some backup, no matter how little or how old, is better than none.         Lou -snip- I am now considering off site storage. 3. Well, Joan, we never know what little tangles life is going to throw at us.  It's good to know that some things are taken care of.  I always figure that if I survive the terrorists, the crazy drivers (I assume they are not terrorists), the Next Great Plague, the next big earthquake, Global Warming, and Nuclear War with some pip-squeak country, all I have to put up with is the electricity going out, the government going bankrupt and one of my grown children having to move back in with me.  Did life get easier for our ancestors?  "Look out for the Saber-toothed Tiger in the wood, Lou." Sadly, we have to back things up because the computer only does what we tell it to do.  And not always that!  Yesterday, all my e-mail contact list disappeared from my e-mail service.  Today they are back.  I think I'll copy them all out just in case they disappear again.  My photos may not mean anything to anyone else, but I'd hate to have someone toss them out.  I might recover!  The last time I had surgery (it was on my throat), the first thing the doctor did when I woke up was that he asked me to speak.  He was afraid he had damaged the nerves to my vocal cords.  Now, I can live without a voice, but I have to keep an eye on my wife who goes into a cleaning frenzy and moves everything when I'm in hospital.  I'm still looking for some things.... So I believe in being prepared.  When the aliens come in their big space ship to abduct me, I want to grab that CD of my photos so I can show them to the aliens.  They'll probably fall asleep and I can sneak off the ship and go back home! When Market Rasen disappears in the next earthquake I want the archaeologists of the future to find your CD and say, "Look at the funny clothes they wore back then."  I am, of course, assuming that all your photos include some clothing.  But, like you, I didn't give each person I photographed a name tag before the shot.  So unless all of your photographs are police booking photos, take a soft pencil and write at least one name on the back of the photo before sending it off the CD copy guys. Prepare for the worst, and when it doesn't happen, celebrate.     Lou  ;-> ----- Original Message ----- From: Joan Van Daalen <jvandaal@sympatico.ca> To: Baz Willy <spadga19382000@yahoo.co.uk>; eng-lincsgen@rootsweb.com Cc: Sent: Thursday, April 19, 2012 10:17 AM Subject: Re: [LIN] PHOTOS Old put on Cd 19.04.12 I do have my family tree in hard copy in a huge binder, and also on a memory stick, but when it comes to photographs, I have some in albums, some on a couple of CD's, some on a memory stick, trip photos still on a camera card, and some photos on my C drive.  I know I MUST organize them but it makes my head ache to think of it. 3. Hi Peter *All* forms of backup can fail over time OR are made obsolete by advances in technology , anyone got 5 1/4" floppies or VHS video tapes ? The best way is to make multiple copies in various forms, external hard drive, on CD/DVD and distribute to friends and family, online back up facility (Dropbox etc) , memory stick (as CD/DVD) If your only back up is all in the same building you are asking for trouble and are prone to loss through fire/flood/theft etc So copy, copy and copy again The better the quality of CD/DVD the more likely they are to last longer, however *any* can fail Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > G'day from another part of down unda! > > I could t=be wrong, but I've heard that the quality of images & data on > CD/DVD can "rot" after about 5 years so just like our police force do, > perhaps its worth regularly replacing the copies onto another CD. > Perhaps memory/USB stick drives could be a better way.
