Purchase of the indexes published by Lincolnshire Family History Society, or use of a sub on FMP which has many of the LFHS indexes, can considerably shorten your searching time. <G> Pam Proud to be a member of Lincolnshire Family History Society http://www.lincolnshirefhs.org.uk/ On 20/05/2012 12:46, Alan Fox wrote: > M .... Hi Alan It is worthwhile looking at Lincs to the Past, under Timberland Baptisms. There is a Sarah, daughter of Thomas & Milli(e)cent Musson (Mufsam), baptised 7th January 1798. There is also a John, baptised 12th April 1796, Elizabeth, 10th November 1799 and a Thomas, 17th November 1803. There may be more siblings before 1796 and/or after 1803 - you'll have to check. Lincs to the Past also shows the marriage of Sarah Bate to Edward Cartwrights on 17 May 1836. I haven't seen much notice of this in the British press, but I only see it second-hand these days. The American press is having a bit too much fun with finding out that singer Loretta Lynn is three years older than she claims. I will give them credit. Someone did the research and documented their findings. I have a letter from a cousin, sent back in the late 1960s, where she lists the birthdates of all of her brothers and sisters and herself. All are two or three years after their actual births, but the months and days were correct. If you haven't found an ancestor who "fibbed" about their age, you will. Just keep looking. All my female ancestors only aged 8 to 9 years between each census. As they got older, the aging seemed to slow even more. So take those ages in the census as a "guide", not gospel. And on death certificates, I sometimes think the informants were having a flight of fancy when they gave the age of the deceased. And, no, you can't "fix" the census records. They are what they are. Just chuckle and move on. Lou

<quote>One point to remember with Findmypast and Ancestry is that you can 'pay-as-you-go' which can be useful if you want only a few images.<quote> Ancestry offer a 14 day free trial too [don't forget to cancel] and also offers of free database as 1911 was free last weekend to search and view. One very over-looked free resource for censuses is FreeCEN, sibling to FreeBMD and FreeREG. http://freecen.rootsweb.com/ The early census(1841-1861) transcriptions for England and Wales are a little sparse, but Scotland is very well represented, with quite a few counties being 100% complete. For 1891, Lincolnshire is 88.4% complete. http://freecen.rootsweb.com/statistics.html Another free resource, though again like FreeCEN, not yet complete is the new FamilySearch site. https://www.familysearch.org/ Scroll down a little, till you see 'browse by location', and then click British Isles. The census entries are near the top of the page. (Incidentally, the 1881 census entries are new transcriptions, hence the very small number of entries currently transcribed.) The transcriptions are of individual people though, not households. To find Miriam in 1911 on any site (free or commercial), you will need to search for Miriam Whyville. She's living with the Cook family. One point to remember with Findmypast and Ancestry is that you can 'pay-as-you-go' which can be useful if you want only a few images. Luckily we can now pay a subscription to an 'on line' provider ie. Ancestry or Find My Past. Or visit local Libraries , County Record Offices and access the census local to their county. Lincolnshire have always had an amazing team to get a surname index out ASAP. I'm sure other counties have too. Also Ancestry also has a 'Library' system where you can access free via local library, just pay for computer time. Not so long ago we were having to book a coach and travel to London to see 'out of county' census, and some of our local until purchased by the powers that be. Splitting the cost of the coach hire amongst the users. It was for us here in North Lincolnshire a 4 1/2 hr trip down strarting at 04:30. A long day but well worth it. Some places were not indexed and you had to sit infront of a reader just slowly turning until your names came up. It was so rewarding coming home with something. How things have changed and anyone can access from their own home or library, though some still seem to expect others to do it for them and not pay anything. ________________________________ From: Ben & Bridget <lincsimp@bigpond.com> To: eng-lincsgen@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, 20 May 2012, 7:04 Subject: [LIN] NEED INFO RE 1891 CENSUS G'day Lou or Listers I have the 1881 Census on CD so no problem but How can I access the 1891, 1901 and 1911 British census Any suggestion woud be welcome I do have an M Miriam WYVILLE bon 1909 I think in Notts but her father and mother died and she then went to live with an Uncle maybe in Lincs. MGC: [To make it simple]: These are basically your Markhams (The Thomas Ward Markham maybe mine ?). The problem is I have linked my Thomas Markham (+ Hannah Ward) to be the Thomas Markham 'Coachman/Maker' in Louth. That should be your Francis Markham as given out. The 'Maria' Markham remains to be your Rebecca Markham until otherwise proved wrong. Should be right. The b. record for GM:1823 will be there, and you will need to go through several well chosen church registers. It should be a church in this region of Louth, up to Ramsgate !!!. It should be in one of these registers. Due to the problem in my tree for occ. for my TM, it made him connect to your 'Coachman'. We must also re-examine 'Coachman'. We can completely separate our trees until they ever connect. I will need to move on, but I can still help you if you want. You need time to go and follow up on several things. You truly need to access these records. Make a plan. It is waiting for you. But here is some more things I can still pass on, I will try to write this as simple as I can: Firstly: [Whites 1856: Louth Carriers: Laceby: Markham & Swaby]: This MUST BE your Markham at least. The very least !. By <1851 GM:1823 was 'Carrier' + 'Harness Maker'. By 1853 is 'Carrier'. Everything is correct (!). = A Valuation of the messuages, tenements and lands of Louth in 1823 shows 4 households with Markhams: Louth 1823: Kidgate Lane - John Markham - house. Louth 1823: Market Place - Thomas Markham - house and shop. Louth 1823: Ramsgate - George Markham - house. (Yours !!!). Louth 1823: Upgate - John Markham - house and premises. = DougH: Now I want you to go to Google Maps and go down Eastgate upper end, and then make a sharp left into RAMSGATE, this seems? to be the road in which your George Markham b:1771, GM:1823's grandfather, lived, and then make a sharp left into JAMES ST. (!!!). This JAMES ST. is of exceptional significance, I can't emphasize this enough. In James Street very near to GM:1771, is the major port where the John Swaby horses and coaches leave: HGD 1842 : John Swaby, James Street (TUE: James St. - Alford). HGD 1842 : John Swaby, James Street (THU: James St. - Grimsby + Hull). HGD 1842 : John Swaby, James Street (TUE: James St. - Horncastle) (.& Jph. Cash, Walkergate). HGD 1842 : Joseph Cash, Walkergate (MON+THU: James St. - Spilsby; John Swaby, James St.). = One of the John Swaby seems to be an older person, and then probably one of his sons continued on here. This site in James St. is a principle port for travel. Your Markham is riding the James St. to Laceby trail, and possibly even to Hull sometimes ?. He is either a 'Carrier' for mail, or transporting people, or both. I see the Post Office did work mail on Sundays till 12h00. Maybe he could only return on Mondays ?. It could mean his route never allowed him off on Sunday, essentially worked the whole week away from home. The route James St. - Alford (!), same to Grimsby (!), same to Hull (!), where I might add, is where I would look for Rebecca England family too, and Joseph Cash from Walkergate (!). Now remember the post : = 1841 Census: Walkergate: Joseph Cash 25 Carrier Y Desdemona Cash 20 Y John Harrison 20 M S Y Henry Green 20 M S Y Richard Dales 15 M S Y Rebecca England 20 Dressmaker Y Ann Traves 15 F S Y = [There is another point I want to make over this and through!]: !!! AHA !!! : Your Rebecca England in 1841 is staying with this same Joseph Cash 'Carrier' in Walkergate (!). Joseph Cash is also termed a 'Carrier', (Not something you would like to put in a Census record today I might add !!!), and Joseph Cash is on the carriage trails. I suppose a 'Carrier' would pertain to 'carriage' ?. These are carriages or coaches drawn by horse. Also: [Jas. Swaby (Walkergate) from the Rein Deer, Beverley, Yorks]: His trip to the Rein Deer, Market Place, Beverley, Yorkshire (Passengers + Parcels). It says "coach arrives every Sunday ... returns 5 evening. GM:1823 must also be away every Sunday night on the coaches the whole night through. [James Swaby of Walkergate, to Rein Deer, Market Place, Hull, daily at 9 mg., ret. at 1/2 past 8 evg.]: GM:1823 might only return 20H30 back in Louth, unpack mail, etc., and still get home. He only got home after the census people had passed by. His occupation keeps from home the whole time, every day too (!!!). http://books.google.co.za/books?id=F59bAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA349&dq=Rein+Deer,+Market+place+Beverley&hl=en&sa=X&ei=R6-2T9SZJ8SBhQee0In9Bw&sqi=2&ved=0CDkQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=Rein%20Deer%2C%20Market%20place%20Beverley&f=false === 1842: Wm. Swaby, James St., Poulterer. 1842: George Tatam & Thos., Limekiln Hill. [Joiners/Cab. Makers]. 1842: James Curtis + Wm. Emmerson from Marquis of Granby WED Aft., Grimsby + Hull; John Swaby, James St. THU. *** 1842: Thomas Ward, from Marquis of Granby, to Gainsborough, WED Aft., goes through Market Rasen + Spittal. 1896: London (South): Marquis of Granby, William Markham, 80 High Street, Woolwich. [1896-1901]. === NOTE: The Gainsborough route goes through Market Rasen, and probably Middle Rasen where Rebecca might be born, also to Hull much. Joseph Cash has brought Rebecca England to Louth by carriage. *** Note James Curtis is also a 'Carrier'. Where would the [Marquis of Granby] in Louth be ?. === The occupations need to be reviewed better I think: If you go through some of these directories, you will find the same person listed say twice: HGD 1842 : Thomas Markham, Painter, Butcher Market. HGD 1842 : Thomas Markham, Coach Builder, Butcher Market. 1828/9 Pigot's Directory: Thomas Markham, Painter (Signs)(& Decorator), Eastgate. Same for Hannah: [Hannah Markham Corn Market Coach Builder Gospelgate]. [William Bennett Eastgate Painter (With Hannah Markham!)]. 33 Eastgate is exactly at the east end of Nichol Hill. === Not sure who these are? : GEORGE MARKHAM 'CARRIER': What year is this and place ?. http://books.google.co.za/books?ei=_QK4T8THJ86ZhQePoJTjCA&id=D-8NAAAAQAAJ&dq=Markham+George%2C+carrier&q=Markham+carrier#search_anchor JOHN MARKHAM '?CARRIER?' My 4xgreat grandmother Mary ROBERTS married Paul Lawrence of Sproxton, Leicestershire on 1 June 1778 at South Witham and they had six children in Sproxton before her death in 1788. I know nothing of her origins: was she from Lincolnshire or was she a Leicestershire girl? Who were her parents? Did she have any siblings? Lesley Aveyron, France
Just a quick check, no major work required here. Joseph Cash is clearly a 'Carrier' with the John Swaby group, doing the trips between towns. Where is he in all of the census records. He is slightly older than GM:1823, so he makes the 1841 census as a 'Carrier'. My 'M' is Elizabeth MOOR who married Joseph Portas(s) on 6th May 1740 at Wyham-cum-Cadeby. I believe that, by 1749, the couple lived at Marshchapel & some of their children were baptised at St Mary, Marshchapel. Janet Peacock
My "M" is a family name MOTLEY. Thomas MOTLEY married Rebecca SCOTTERICK (numerous variations of spelling) in 1790 in Toynton All Saints. They had nine daughters and no sons so the family name died out except that it was used as a middle name for some of their descendants. Of those nine daughters, four married, three died in infancy/childhood and two didn't marry. The ones who married were Susannah to William HUNTER in 1830 in Holbeach. (he was a surgeon) Children William Thomas (b 1831) and Elizabeth (Betsey) (b 1833. Rebecca married twice. Firstly to Edward BLANCHARD in Alford (both minors but no mention of it in PRs) - one son Thomas Mo(o)re BLANCHARD (b 1816) , and secondly to Richard HUNTER (cousin of William) in 1818. (a blacksmith) Two children - William Motley HUNTER (m gg grandfather) (b 1823) and Mary Ann (b 1825). William Motley became a Methodist minister and married in Holmfirth, Yorkshire. Mary Ann married a John BATES in Holbeach. Jane married a Thomas THOMPSON in 1828 in Toynton All Saints. They had one son, William, that I know of. Mary married Gildon ELVIN in 1828 in Toynton All Saints and had two sons born in Toynton St Peter. (Richard and Thomas Motley ELVIN) Does anyone have any connection to this MOTLEY family? I believe the 'original' Thomas was born in Horsington and probably the son of Thomas MOTLEY and Ann FOUNTAIN. Another Lincolnshire "M" connected to me was Maurice HALL - he had the music shop at 125 Eastgate Louth and was married to Florence ARMSTRONG who was a granddaughter of William Motley HUNTER. She was my great aunt. I have two lovely letters written to me when I was a baby/small child by Uncle Maurice during WW2. Elizabeth Pugh Whitehorse Yukon Canada
