    3. Peter, It would seem that the entry is on the 14 day Feb 1774 when the consent of John Brewer, the father of Mary Brewer (age 20) was given. The next page of the register shows a Banns entry for the 15th Feb where the consent of William RIDGE, the Grandfather and guardian of William Charles was given because he too was found/proven to be underage. The marriage was by Licence so you may get more information if you send for a copy of the licence. The vicar's name could be Willis Probry??Doesn't look like Crabtree though. 3. A list of the PRs currently held by Lincolnshire Archives for Barrow on Humber and the relevant dates for each register can be found by typing Barrow on Humber PAR 1 into the 'with the exact phrase' box on 'Advanced search'. http://www.lincstothepast.com If there's a thumbnail beside an entry then the register is online. No post-1837 marriages; no baptisms after 1910/1911, or prior to that where a register finishes later than 1910/1911. e.g. if a register covers 1900-1948, then none of the register will be online. For other parishes, you need to read the 'how to search for parish registers' in the Help section. Keep scrolling down for a list of the precise parish names to input, and then add PAR 1 to the parish name for the PRs in the 'exact phrase'box. If you omit PAR 1 then you get all the records for the parish - they can make interesting reading but sometimes leave you with too many results to scroll through when you're looking specifically for PRs! 3. Not so much of a sense of humour as using family names Richard Ladd married Elizabeth Daffe (Daft) Gosberton 1695 https://familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Arichard~%20%2Bsurname%3Aladd~%20%2Bmarriage_year%3A1650-1700   My Dad thought it was funny too having the Daft family in my mothers side - till he got the Trollops! The Daft family was a treat to research, some fantastic wills. The surname is SHEARWOOD and I found William Hiram first married Ann Westoby who died and then William married her sister Elizabeth in Hull. I have copies of the marriages. These girls were the daughtes of Thomas & Ann. I don't have the info in front of me right now but Ann was a Sergant who married Thomas Westoby. I have a copy of the father's Will which proves these 2 girls were his daughters. I will contact you tomorrow and help sort the family out, it's past my bedtime here. 3. Barrow on Humber PRs say that William Hiram SHERWOOD (not Spearwood, as per the message heading) married an Ann Westoby in 1826. http://www.lincstothepast.com/Records/RecordDisplayTranscript.aspx?oid=513757&iid=36604 Burial of an Ann Sherwood, aged 26, in 1833. http://www.lincstothepast.com/Records/RecordDisplayTranscript.aspx?oid=513833&iid=37281 I've had a quick look through the remaining years of the marriage register to 1837, and I've also checked on FreeBMD for a William Sherwood/Shearwood marrying in Lincolnshire between 1837 and 1851 without any joy. Though I have to say that the middle name of Westoby for Mary baptised in 1835 seems slightly telling, possibly the only way you will be able to confirm William's second wife's surname is to send for the birth certificate of one of the children of William and Elizabeth. Most, if not all of the births, were registered with a spelling of Shearwood. 3. Hello, Jean,     Every culture has people with an ethno-centric attitude.  We used to joke about the Russians claiming that they invented everything first, and there are people who believe their country is the best place in the world and the rest of the planet is a rustic backwater.  Years ago there was a book, "The Ugly American", that dealt with how Americans are perceived in other parts of the world when they travel.  The book probably could have been written about a number of places.     Still, the best thing is to quietly correct when one can and not to argue with stubbornness.  People sometimes believe what they want to believe.     I like to remind people that Walt Disney's ancestors are from Lincolnshire.  It gives them something to think about.         Lou ----- Original Message ----- From: jean waterloo <waterloj@massnet1.net> To: eng-lincsgen@rootsweb.com Cc: Sent: Saturday, July 14, 2012 10:07 AM Subject: Re: [LIN] Place names I am appaled and ashamed of any American that has attended even the first grade or held a penny in their hand to even as a joke to suggest such a thing since the US just celebrated its 236th birthday and Abraham Lincoln was born in 1808 and Lincoln and Lincolnshire dates from before the middleages.  I wonder if that person knows there was such a time.  Jean in USA ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anne Cole" <duncalf@one-name.org> To: <eng-lincsgen@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 09, 2012 12:09 PM Subject: Re: [LIN] Place names > Someone once told me that an American had asked if Lincoln was named after > Abraham Lincoln! 3. Hi All I have a tapestry picture done by my ggrandmother in Hogsthorpe. It's a picture and along the bottom is her name and date 1856. My mother always told me she was aged 13 when she did it but now, after research, I know she was more likely 11 or 12 and also that her father died that year. 3. Hi Lou & Other Missing Lincs Just a bit more trivia really, but my ancestor did a blacksmith apprenticeship but ended up working in, and later owning, a bakery/confectioner shop in Spilsby. 3. Hi, Missing Lincs,     I was looking at some census records recently and I saw the term "Berlin Wool" as the occupation of several people.  Now, the term is new to me and it might be new to you, as well.     Someone who worked in Berlin Wool did needlepoint work with died wool on canvas, normally.  There is a good description at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_wool_work     Enjoy.         Lou (list admin.)
