    3. Hi, Judy,     With "free" e-mail you get what you pay for.  No one guarantees the delivery of your e-mail.  I've had e-mail take 7 days to go 16 miles (as the crow flies) and less than 20 seconds across the Pacific from California to New Zealand.     If the Internet is busy with lots of traffic, e-mail usually gets treated as "low priority".  Some servers will even be set only to receive e-mail while the "net is busy and will send it when things quiet down.  If the server is having other problems or is taken off-line for some reason, the Internet should re-route e-mail "around it", but that can add to the delay.  It's a remarkable system when it works.  But when it doesn't, it's a pain.  My old Internet Service Provider "upgraded" their e-mail service one day and lost 5 months of my e-mail.  It took me almost a year to recover the lost e-mails from them.     So, if I don't get back to you in 20 seconds, I have an excuse.  You can use it too.  It's "the technology".     And I see that the list is no longer quiet.  Good.         Lou

    3. Hello Velma, Have you looked at Free Reg? There are many 'appropriate' Mary Dawson birth/baps already transcribed - and I checked for 1775 +/- 10 years. Do you have the first name of her first born daughter - that could be a clue as to her mother's name - or maybe her second born son could have been given her father's name. Or you could look for siblings of any of the Mary Dawsons who come up on the list and see if any of them had unusual given names which could have been carried on to another generation. I would go much farther away than 10 miles from Alford.... All the best Elizabeth Pugh Yukon Canada

    3. Hi, Missing Lincs,     In that vanity that men have, we name ships like Dreadnought and Invincible as if these names were some kind of charm to chase away harm.  Such is not result.  The HMS Invincible was a Battle Cruiser with 12-inch main guns.  She sank near the end of the Battle of Jutland in late May 1916 taking with her most of the crew.  One of those was a lad from Barton on Humber named Theodore WILES.         Lou

    3. Shoving my oar in while Anne is probably out transcribing yet more records<g>, the list archives show this, which was part of a post by Anne on 21 Oct 2000. (And found by seaching for Benjamin Hare.) SETTLEMENT EXAMINATION dated 13 May 1818. Benjamin HARE of Horsington, Labourer. Aged 23, born at Quarrington. Married Mary SCOTT his present wife after Mayday 1815. [Horsington parish 13/SE/41] Genuki Lincolnshire has an extremely informed section on the various aspects of Poor Law http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LIN/#Poorhouses (You need the Settlement papers section, Susan.0 And yes, I'm sure the actual document will show more detail. My 3 or 4 x grandmother had a removal order (similar but different to settlement examinations/certificates) against her and when I sent for it, I found it listed two children who had been born in a different parish to the other six, thereby explaining why she and hubby had been married for 4 years before their 'first' child was born. When you ask Archives for a copy of the document, ask them to also check for any writing on the back of the document and send a copy of that if appropriate. 3. Hello Susan, I just had a look at it and it confirms the marriage with Scott, and says where he worked for a year and thereby gained a settlement, as well as the information on FMP. It would be well worth getting a copy from the archives as he signed the document rather than making a mark. The LA reference is Horsington Parish 13/9/46. Incidentally, in November we will be publishing a CD containing all the parish settlement examinations, fully transcribed, plus all the removal orders with abstracts of the important information. These are among the documents deposited by parishes that come from the parish chest. There are over 5000 documents, and I have included all the letters, receipts, bills etc. that were found with the Exams and ROs. You will therefore be able to search by surname for all the people examined and removed, plus all the other people mentioned in the exams and ROs. In many cases useful information about employers are given. I remember one examination where the burial record of the employer's nephew is included! There are one or two missing parishes from the coverage due to my having to request conservation of some documents before I can see them and unfortunately the examinations for Cowbit appear to have been "mislaid" somewhere in the repository. They will turn up, and will be included on a Poor Law Miscellany CD to be published once all bastardy and apprenticeship records have been published, as there are lots of documents that don't conform to the main series (certificates, exams, removal orders, apprenticeship and bastardy).
