    3. RAF Sutton Bridge: pilots and Spitfires A visit to the War Graves in St Matthew's Church reveals many servicemen who lost their lives whilst serving or training at Sutton Bridge. Many came from Canada, Australia and Poland and what is now the Czech Republic. Lack of pilot experience, due to being trained so quickly, contributed to loss of life. Most accidents, it seems, were mid-air collisions caused by inexperienced pilots becoming disorientated or simply by showing off. One Hurricane crashed near the Bridge and the unfortunate pilot was burned to death. Injured airmen were taken to Peters Point House which was used as a hospital. http://www.bridgewatch.org.uk/town-reminiscences.html Guys (the hospital) used to own Park House could this be what you are looking for Bev -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Rod Strong via Sent: 23 October, 2014 6:27 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [LIN] Peterspoint House Hi Listers, I wonder if anyone living near Sutton Bridge knows where Peterspoint House is? 1. [LIN] JOHN JOHNSON married MARY GALLOWAY
    2. Rex via
    3. Just for the record: One of my Johnson lines goes back to JOHN JOHNSON who married MARY GALLOWAY 21 July 1747 in Winteringham. I decided to do a bit of research on one of their children, and entered this marriage in Ancestry's Members' Family Trees to see if anyone else had found anything in an area where - years ago - I came to a halt. Ancestry produced 617,480 trees with this couple - and I checked the first 100. I went into a state of despair when I found that 94 of the 100 were incorrect, as they all had John down as born in 1730 in Saxby - the wrong John. Four trees had something around the right date for the baptism (1713) and two made no guess. Some trees were totally bizarre, one with a Robert Johnson who lived from 1680 to 1790 - which I reckon was a bit unlikely. Several had Robert born in Isles, Marne, Champagne, France - which seems a bit distant from Winteringham. Anyway, if someone searches for this couple on the internet now, they may see this note: John Johnson died 2 Jan 1791 Winteringham, age given in parish records as 78 (therefore born around 1713?). Mary (Galloway) Johnson died 24 Mar 1811 Winteringham age given as 88. I have ideas about how this couple go back in time. Mary I know came over from North Ferriby, and her parents were from Bishop Burton. John could have had Lincolnshire origins, but there were several Johnson families coming across the Humber at this time, and John may have been followed Mary from Yorkshire. he still needs resolving. How can so many people follow one another like sheep? What value Ancestry Trees? Rex

    3. Anne Thanks for your reply. CWGC states that your grandfather was the skipper of the Fitzroy. I hope there is a photo of the ship somewhere. The photo I have of the 9 men does not indicate any of them as a captain. Checking again there is something on the collar of a chap sitting in the middle of the front row.
