Hi, Missing Lincs, If any of you have relatives in Waithe parish (between Louth and Grimsby), take a look at the Roll of Honour in the church: http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Lincolnshire/Waithe.html Notice that we don't know who these men are? Tell us if you know any of them. Or, look one of them up. Let the list know and let the Roll of Honour site maintainer know, too. Thank you Lou Mills, list geek.

    3. There are (or were) three villages, or perhaps now two villages and a town bearing the name Rasen, deriving from the stream Rase: East Rasen, Middle Rasen and West Rasen. East Rasen seems to have developed to the extent that it is now a town and become Market Rasen. East, West and Middle are mentioned in the Domesday Book. Over the centuries the relative importance of the three Rasens has waxed and waned. Middle Rasen used to have two churches belonging to two separate monastic foundations Drax in Yorkshire and Tupholme, Saints Paul and Peter respectively; now there is just the one. If you are tracing your family history you may need to look through the parish registers of Middle Rasen (Drax) and Middle Rasen (Tupholme). As far as I can gather, there was no particular date when the name changed from East to Market Rasen. I suspect it just changed gradually to reflect the importance of the various markets that took place in the town. Just purchased a Long Case Clock made by an ancestor of mine, John Page of Market Rasen. On the clock face is refers to the town being called Rasen. I know this was the old name of the town - and also used today. I can't find any reference to when the name changed. I have been told the clock is ca 1835 - I have also seen a clock by his son , also John Page, with a later date incorporating the legend Market Rasen. Just wondered when the name changed? 3. I would tend to think the railways were the reason for the name change. When they published time-tables or schedules, they wanted unique names for each stop along the way. That's why Corby is now "Corby Glen". That would put the name change around 1835 to 1845. I might find more if I looked in the old Directories from around that time. 3. In the Protestation Returns (1641/2) it was referred to as "East Rasen". It was called "Market Rasen" on a settlement certificate for 1700. I've tried various spellings of "Rasen" but can't find any earlier references in the settlement certificates. Haven't searched any others of our CDs. 3. Do you mean that Jane was definitely living in Spalding in 1911? Or just that you think she should be? You give no clue to her age, whether Molsher is her maiden or married name, and if she's married the names of any children she might have. I've just looked at the 1911 census website, and presume you mean the Jane aged 37 living in the district/other of Spalding. This means the registration district of Spalding, not the town. Ancestry list that Jane, says she was born Moulton Seas End. Children Arthur, Edith, and Walter. According to the enumerator's schedule the family was living in Surfleet Fen (Short Drove), but Jane has written Gosberton Clough, followed by Surfleet Fen which appears to have been crossed out, then Spalding on her form. Census reference - RG14 PN19485 SN95, though Ancestry don't list the schedule number. 3. Coming to this a bit late. Another thing to remember is that it was not unheard of for slave ships to occasionally bring one or two back to England, for whatever reason. The tradition in the UK was that if the owner died, the slave was freed. Also the Quakers ran a very efficient equivalent of the American "underground railway" to spirit slaves to freedom. They were often moved to rural villages and later intermarried with a local individual. I have read that about 10% of the English actually have some African DNA for this reason, although the heritage is not usually apparent, having been diluted over the generations.
