    1. [LIN] Query
    2. Barbara Paris via
    3. Hello Nivard. I recently downloaded the free basic MyHeritage. It's easy to get family names and trees onto it. I've started cautiously, just putting in a couple of families and haven't paid for further family information. Lots of family links/names have been sent through for free. I'm amazed at the number of family names they have of mine. My query is, do you know of the site and if so, is it worth subscribing to? Regards. Barbara. Sent from my iPad

    3. Thank you Terry Yes I saw the many Ancestry trees, I think it narrows down to 8 as several are duplicates (seems some just keep uploading a new tree without deleting the old tree) But I do find tree owners rather poor correspondents Hence my posting to the list which is archived and findable by a google search Sadly all the posts on facebook are virtually lost as soon as they are made, so much will be lost or hidden for later researchers Hopefully this might be found and I can supply a picture Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 03/04/2016 09:49, Terry Wells wrote: > It looks like lots of people are! 3. Your best bet is to start with newspapers as a case like this is likely to have been of interest and will have been reported. It may have been held at Petty Sessions, which were held much more regularly, and were more locally based, than Quarter Sessions. You should also consider that the Guardians of the Poor Law Unions were very probably involved and the case may have been mentioned in the Minutes of their fortnightly or weekly meetings. I have seen many such cases mentioned in the minutes that we have transcribed (before 1901). Barrowby is in the Grantham Poor Law Union and Lincolnshire Archives does have minutes that cover this period. You really need a firm date though before going down that road. 3. Hi Terry, In some ways you can finish a family by cutting the generations in half. I am doing our McArthur line in two parts. Our immigrant came to Tasmania in 1857, their marriage took place in 1856 in Lanarkshire, Scotland, I have yet to find John McArthurs true date and place of birth in Scotland, but I am not going to dwell on that date as I may never find out, so I am starting at his approx year of birth 1828 according to his age on the marriage certificate which was 28 and I have the names of his parents as they are on his marriage certificate,, no birth for him there though. I am taking the family to 1957 so the first one hundred years. Then Part two I am starting at 1910, the birth of the next generation character and that will be on going for a little while at least. I am waiting for the rest of the births for this last generation to be born, then I may start again with part three as I already have sufficient records, newspaper clippings, photos for the second part. That! is it for the Australian side of our family. My Lincs famiy, I think I have as much as can be found for the time being, that is my maternal family, along with my paternal family, of Yorkshire and Middlesex, that should be enough to be interesting to complete another side of the family history. you can just keep creating new episodes, hopefully someone will keep it going after we have gone. For now though, I have enough to finish part one, for each side of our family, maternal and paternal on both of our families. 3. Hi Barbara Like everything it is easy when you know how. Our last workshop was about inserting the 'Source Citations', really that applies no matter what program you are using. If you are intending to published a book it is important to note where you have found your records so others can check the source of your work. I never did this in the first place and so have a lot of catching up to do, but having said that, I have done some source citation before the workshop, some were done incorrectly. I find it better if you do all the tasks such as inserting the source, whether it be for a photograph and newspaper cutting, which Newspaper etc at the time you insert your family member, then you don't have to go back and do it later. I try to do that now. At one stage I just stopped inserting family and did as much readjusting as I could. I am still a novice, so still learning and still making mistakes to be corrected as well..At our workshops run by our Society President, run about ! monthly, we can ask questions and just about everyone there are mystified at times, but we learn little by little. The light bulb goes on eventually. 3. Nivard has said it all. I have exported trees from PAF to all kinds of other programs quite successfully. I am quite happy to stay with PAF but when doing some research for other friends I have used Legacy and FTM amongst others. Heredis is a good one to use on an IPad. I find though that it is far easier to set them all up on PAF and then export to whichever package you are using. I find PAF is so easy to use and as Nivard says, a great many of the new features are never needed. W. Smith

I have a line back to Robert BOYES, bapt. 31 March 1827 at Gainsborough, son of John and Jane BOYES of Morton, father a sailor. John and Jane had 6 children bapt. at Gainsborough up to 1833. I cannot find any birth or bapt. of this John BOYES.   When Robert BOYES, b. 1827, married Jane HIRD 27 Nov. 1848 at Hull his father is John BOYES, deceased mariner.  Jane HIRD’s father is also ‘deceased mariner’. So there may have been some confusion here? In the 1851 Census of Hull/Sculcoates John’s son William, b. 1831 at Gainsborough, is living with Sarah Ann BOYES, b. 1833 at Gainsborough, daughter of Robert BOYES, b. 1794 at Gainsborough Workhouse.  This infers that John BOYES the Gainsborough mariner is brother to this Robert BOYES, b. 1794, bapt. 1797 age 2 ½  at Gainsborough Workhouse. 1850 marr. of William BOYES, b. 1831(brother of Robert BOYES b. 1827) father is John BOYES, mariner [not shown as deceased]. 1851 second marr. of Robert BOYES, b. 1827, father John BOYES, mariner [not shown as deceased]. 1864 marr. of John BOYES, b. 1833, father late John BOYES, mariner. It seems to depend on what question was asked by the person performing the ceremony. If the only question asked was "Name of Father?" then this is all you get. If the fact that he was deceased is neither offered nor asked then you just get the name. John BOYES and his wife Jane appear to have avoided the Census of 1841 and 1851. The Death Cert. of John BOYES of 1855, age 63 a journeyman cooper, was, from 1851 Census, born at Walkington, East Yorks., a cooper and sloopman. Bob Jennings
