Hi Lou and all you Missing Lincs We have been missing our Lincolnshire List mail for some time now. The rumour is that Rootsweb has had some difficulties. The only other List I am subscribed to is SFK-UK which seems to have been affected as well but within the last few days is up and enjoying a fair bit of exchange. I'm sending this as a test to see if anyone receives it. If you do could we please regroup and get back to some exchanges or queries? Thanks Linda B.C. Canada
An awful lot of people appear to be using facebook groups to ask for help that way they are hitting a target of thousands of people. The Lincolnshire connections group has 900 members. hi Lou I knew you would be aware, it was more for the other listers who appear not to be aware of the reasons for lack of posts The problem re Mailman was that rootsweb stayed with an early version and kept tweaking the old software to keep up with changes So when they eventually went over to the latest version they had skipped several versions, I wouldn't call the changes minor myself I mentioned the apparent non appearance of Alan Moorehouses post as it said yesterday, but see it was in September, so that explains that Regardless of the reason its good to see some posts :-) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 05-Oct-16 8:43 PM, lr_mills@mauimail.com wrote: > ----- Original Message ----- >> From: "Nivard Ovington" <ovington.one@gmail.com> >> >> Rootsweb recently upgraded the servers for the lists >> >> At the same time they installed the latest Mailman software and this >> has caused various problems > -snip- > > Yes, I was aware of some of that. Rootsweb recently upgraded the servers for the lists At the same time they installed the latest Mailman software and this has caused various problems Some of those being the inability to post by some email clients In the last three months there were 40 posts in July, 1 in August, 2 in September and these two today I am not sure what invitation Alan R Moorehouse sent or is referred to as its not in the archives, so didn't come via the list They are still working on the posting problems so hopefully that will be fixed soon So lack of posts is down to a mixed bag of reasons, Rootsweb was down completely for a couple of weeks, the posting problems of some email clients and the usual drop in posts during the summer, along with the plethora of means of communications we have nowadays, some good (the lists) and some bad (Facebook for example) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 05-Oct-16 8:22 PM, Nicola Pike wrote: > I have no emails for about 3 months > On Oct 5, 2016 20:20, <lr_mills@mauimail.com> wrote: > >> ----- Original Message ----- >> Hi Lou and All >> It appears I have not received Linc's List correspondence for several >> months >> until Alan R. Ann was a Convict sent to Australia aboard the lady Juliana. She arrived in V D L in the early 1800s With her son James Joseph. She had previously married Richard Shuttleworth a Bristol Boy. She had james son of Convict William Joseph a Yorkshire Lad. Ann stole clothing in Lincolnshire. Not much is known abput Ann's Parents. Ann came from Kesteven in Lincolnshire. Tried 19th April 1787, she left England in 1790 and arrived in 1791. She stole the clothing from a John Jaques. Whatever happened to William and Richard is unknown. As I have no idea of her age, i also have no idea how to find a baptism. And how to find out whom her parents were. And ideas would be of great help. Kitty Tasmania
Hi everyone, I called on my brother-in law yesterday and in his computer magazine there was information about the next big upgrade starting now for windows 10. Didn't read the whole article but the upgrade will be Windows 10.1, and if you havn't already upgraded to 10 it will cost you to do so, as the free 12 months is finishing. >From what I understand all other systems will no longer be supported. Hi, Missing Lincs, Every now and then, whilst searching old records, I find an old term I have to look up. This one is not a very pleasant word: BRANKS A brank or branks (I've only seen it used in the plural form) is a kind of gag or bridle once used to punish scolding, gossiping or fault-finding women. Branks were used on men as punishment for slander. The term apparently comes to us from Scotland and consisted of an iron framework that fitted over the head. It had a projection that fitted into the mouth and pressed on the tongue. The wearer would be rendered incapable of speech. It was not intended as a torture device (but it sounds damn unpleasant) and was also called a "gossip's bridle" or "scold's bridle". I have no evidence of how long the poor woman was required to wear this. I know they were in use in the 17th century, but I don't know when they first appeared. I assume they were banned by the 1830s. Wikipedia has much more information on Branks. Lou (list admin.)

Hi All I am late to this thread through a hectic weekend of family engagements. My two penny worth, I would suggest that some thought is given to Altrincham, which is about 3 miles from Carrington and Partington on the South side of Manchester.Close by is also Warburton Village.
