    3. Hi all I'm sorry this is not a reply to the tax story, but is a query as to how I can officially pose a question about my Lincolnshire family. It concerns, in particular, the fens drainage and the significant movement of people for it. I'll be happy to be more specific when I know to whom I should address my problem which is about the consequent likely movements of my family Sorry for the intrusion Peter Gee Memb. To avoid the tax some houses from the period can be seen to have bricked-up window-spaces. The tax was repealed 156 years later (1851). Also interesting to note (according to Wikipedia): France (established 1798, repealed 1926) Income tax was not introduced in England until 1842. So, go ahead and put that new window or skylight in. Hi Lou Firstly as we know there is no such thing as a bedroom tax but thats perhaps another story ;-) One Tax of interest, although called a Stamp duty to pay for the American war of independence, was on parish register entries 1783 to 1794 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stamp_Duties_Act_1783. 3. As I understand it, Income Tax was introduced as a temporary measure to pay for the Napoleonic Wars. It was, I believe repealed temporarily, but quickly reinstated. I think the Napoleonic Wars have been paid for by now... 2. My grandmother was named Kathryne Lota; I was named after her. When I got her birth certificate I see it was actually spelled Catherine (the "normal" way), no middle name. It seems Lota was her favorite teacher and Kathryn was a great aunt. Funny. I was so surprised, but I was new to genealogy then. I have found several examples since of people using different names, and bald faced lies to impress future brides. I know of some of these because they are in my lifetime - my father gave a different name for his father and said he was deceased on his marriage cert, my maternal grandfather gave a different country of birth on his marriage cert. My mother lied about her age. And then there are the mistakes....A constant reminder to have several sources for everything. Kathryne In a message dated 2/22/2017 11:13:08 A.M.
