    2. John & Jan Marchant
    3. Hi Everyone My ggrandfather, Thomas BRUMPTON, had a son prior to his marriage in 1872. I have the birth and baptism of Robert BRUMPTON born September 1870 in Louth District. He was baptised on the day he was born, which perhaps could indicate he was not expected to live. However, I have no record of his mother's name or his death. My ggrandmother, who married Thomas in early 1872, was at home with her mother and siblings in the 1871 census. There are several possible marriages and deaths for Robert BRUMPTON on FreeBMD but it's hard to know whether any of them apply to this particular Robert and I do not wish to pay for certificates for them all to find out birth details. Is there any way I can find out more about him? Regards Jan Marchant Australia

    3. You are correct in assuming that a baptism on the day of birth would imply that at least one of the parents feared for the child's life.  It would be an unusual event, although not unknown.  The large majority of baptisms were anywhere from three days to six weeks after the birth.  But sometimes baptism was delayed until the father got back from a long fishing trip or a job outside the area.  On this list we've seen children baptised in "batches"  in some families, presumably because the parents waited until they could get their families together for the event. Alas, we still see newbies to the hobby who list a baptism date as a birth date, which can cause them problems with later research.  The IGI used to be full of "guesses" at birthdates.  A guess is something you want to avoid.  But some people did it because old genealogy programs didn't allow seperate dates for birth, baptism and christening, three different events in the life of a child (baptism and christening are often combined).     Lou (list admin.) ________________________________ From: John & Jan Marchant <jjmarchant@optusnet.com.au> To: eng-lincsgen@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, January 18, 2012 5:31 PM Subject: [LIN] Death Record Query Hi Everyone My ggrandfather, Thomas BRUMPTON, had a son prior to his marriage in 1872. 3. Hi Jan If you have the birth and baptism, surely it states the mothers name? Perhaps its the way I am reading it But otherwise how do you know he was born and baptised the same day and to which father? Looking at the GRO index there is only one Robert BRUMPTON birth registered 1870 and that in Louth Births Sep 1870 Brumpton Robert Louth 7a 566 In the 1871 census there are two Robert BRUMPTONs born 1870 +/- 1 year , one is the son of Charles & Frances born Donnington on Bain which is in the Louth Registration District, the other John & Sarah (who is probably registered as John Robert) Using the birth year of 1870 +/- 5 years there are only two deaths post 1915 (the pre 1915 do not appear to match at all) England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2005 about Robert Brumpton Name: Robert Brumpton Birth Date: abt 1871 Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1946 Age at Death: 75 Registration district: Buckrose Inferred County: Yorkshire East Riding Volume: 9d Page: 61 England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2005 about Robert Brumpton Name: Robert Brumpton Birth Date: abt 1874 Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1947 Age at Death: 73 Registration district: Rotherham Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding Volume: 2c Page: 834 The first seems more likely You could try the birth certificate by ordering with no GRO index reference and stipulate the father as Robert, if it matches they will send the cert, if it does not they will not charge The death cert may not give you sufficient information to know its your man as they do not contain birth details except age at death, which may or may not be accurate Ahh, just found an 1891 census for a Robert BROUMPTON age 19 born Donington on Bain he is a *servant* of a Thomas and Ellen BRUMPTON , is that where you are finding the reference? As he is not enumerated as a son, but a servant, so a son of another family member perhaps ? In 1911 there is a Robert BRUMPTON in Driffield ERY married to a Mary Ann , they were married 10 years The most likely marriage is England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index: 1837-1915 about Robert Brumpton Name: Robert Brumpton Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1901 Registration district: Hull Inferred County: Yorkshire East Riding Volume Number: 9d Page Number: 413 England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index: 1837-1915 about Mary Ann Barr Name: Mary Ann Barr Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1901 Registration district: Hull Inferred County: Yorkshire East Riding Volume Number: 9d Page Number: 413 You would need the cert to make sure who he enters as his father The above Robert appears as the son of Charles in 1881 (who appears to have remarried to a Sarah Elizabeth after 1871) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Everyone > > My ggrandfather, Thomas BRUMPTON, had a son prior to his marriage in 1872. 3. Hello Peter. The Mareham Le Fen baptism register for 1847 onwards has still to be deposited with Lincolnshire Archives so i've taken a more round about route. >From the FreeReg website , there is a burial in Mareham le Fen on April 7th 1858 for Ann DAVISON age 31. ( on February 10th 1858 there is also a burial for William George DAVISON infant- this particular burial will be uploaded onto the website later today) . Probably linking in to this is a marriage in Mareham le Fen on May 16th 1854 of William DAVISON age 24 of Mareham and Ann COLE age 27 of Mareham. Groom and brides fathers were Samuel DAVISON and Francis COLE. Mick
