    3. Septimus Octavian is odd. I have a Septimus, because he was the seventh son (note, not the seventh child, but the seventh son). However, Octavian should, logically, have been the child (or son) born after Septimus. Are you sure they both refer to one person? Happy hunting!   Diana Robinson (nee Gardner) Now in Rochester, NY, USA -----Original Message----- From: Julia [mailto:wisniowka@virginbroadband.com.au] Sent: Monday, March 05, 2012 6:45 AM To: eng-lincsgen-L@Rootsweb.com Subject: [LIN] Unusual names Hi all These are my unusual names all from Lincs. 1. [LIN] Oxtoby/Oxtaby Again
    2. Violet
    3. I would like to thank all the people who responded to my query about the name OXTOBY. You have given me much food for thought!!! First off, it was very interesting that Ed Harrison mentioned about a Richard Oxtaby and family in Brantford Ontario. When my gggrandmother Elizabeth Wright aged 9 and her family emigrated to North America in 1870, they went to Winchester, Illinois. Shortly afterwards, they went to Brantford Ontario. I even have a photo of Elizabeth who looks to be about 13 or so.On the photo is inscribed "S Park Artist", "Brantford Ontario" Perhaps, they went there because family (Oxtaby) were there??? By the late 1870's they were in Essex County Ontario (Windsor area) Denny, again I think you for pointing out the surname in certain areas of Lincolnshire. Worth doing research there. Susan, it is great news to see that a Robert Oxtoby married an Eliza Wright from Barkston. But it is not clear whether or not she was my gggrandfather John Wright's sister. The family believed that John's sister Eliza had never married and that she and another unmarried sister Ann ran a boarding house in a resort area in the south of England. Also family folklore told of John being the only boy with 8 sisters. So, did Robert Oxtoby marry John's sister or another Eliza Wright from Barkston? I need to sort that out. Speaking of sorting out, Pam Downes, you pointed out the same complications that I have run into trying to sort out the parents and births of the WRIGHTs of Barkston. What I do know is that my John's father was also a John Wright and he married an Elizabeth Bartram. Both men were carpenters. I do appreciate your research and providing links for me to pursue. Thank you again for all the interest and help. I have a couple of very good leads to follow and reserach. Violet

    3. Pam, that's where I got it from - I was looking a places within five miles of Hameringham, and there was Asgarby (Spilsby) but I didn't click on that or I would have seen that it is because there are a few Asgarby's in Lincs. I am currently going back and looking at all the places I have found links with and finding out exactly where they are to get a better idea of the layout of the county. And also to try and work out which indexes I need to buy to try and get further back.Jan > Date: Mon, 5 Mar 2012 02:29:41 +0000 > From: pam@five-oaks.co.uk > To: eng-lincsgen@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [LIN] Asgarby?Spilsby? > > Who's not using the link I sent you that ends in LIN/parishes.html ? > (Fourth one in the email.) > > Pam > Proud to be a member of Lincolnshire Family History Society > http://www.lincolnshirefhs.org.uk/ > > > On 05/03/2012 02:15, Jan Moon wrote: > > > > > > > > Why, when you see Asgarby listed somewhere, does it have Spilsby in brackets next to it?Jan > > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ENG-LINCSGEN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. It is curious as to the perspective of what is an unusual name - particularly with Christian names. Surnames are often the origins of what family name have evolved into. Recalling one of my first encounters of my ancestors straying from the mundane routine of naming their 'issue' after English Kings and Queens, 'Tirzah' was my first dalliance with what I thought to be the unusual. I then discovered this name popular at the time, probably in relation to the poem of that name by William Blake ( although it is also a biblical name, which (The Internet thingy tells me) is Hebrew for 'She is my delight'). Either way its use was because of its popularity and like all fashions, they come and go. I figure that as education and media became more wide spread that our ancestors partially freed the shackles of the mundane naming patterns of the past when a whole world of names started to appear in print. Then , where John had jousted, Jabez juggled instead. Frank had fallen to the quite avant-garde Fred, who had been popularised by Queen Victoria's cousin Fredrick II. The poet Ephelia elated Elizabeth and more names followed. I am certain should any of our ancestors be looking down upon us right now - they will be ridiculing Kylie, Usain, Rhianna or Ringo and any other popularised name of the last two centuries. Perhaps they too are making lists. Mind you, I hope not as I am dreading having to explain the origins of " Fifi Trixibelle" to them Tirzah'l that I have to say on the matter J Best Wishes Dan Tirzah Whate'er is born of mortal birth Must be consumed with the earth, To rise from generation free: Then what have I to do with thee? The sexes sprung from shame and pride, Blowed in the morn, in evening died; But mercy changed death into sleep; The sexes rose to work and weep. Thou, mother of my mortal part, With cruelty didst mould my heart, And with false self-deceiving tears Didst blind my nostrils, eyes, and ears, Didst close my tongue in senseless clay, And me to mortal life betray. The death of Jesus set me free: Then what have I to do with thee?

    3. If you see 'by' with regard to a Lincolnshire place you can usually bet it's because there are at least two places with the same first part of the name. Then you have Kirton in Holland and Kirton in Lindsey. Plus you have the ones with a plain name, e.g. Langton, but you also have Langton by Partney and Langton by Wragby as well. That Genuki list, good though it is, is not exhaustive. By far the best reference for all the places in Lincolnshire, including tiny hamlets, is the 'A Gazetteer of Historic Lincolnshire for Family and Local Historians' published by Lincolnshire FHS. It, and the companion 'Registration districts and Deaneries 1841-1901' really are worth their weight in gold. (And I say that as someone born in Lincolnshire!)
