    3. Dear Jan There were a number of Sharp (Sharpe) families throughout Lincolnshire (Stamford/Baston/ Little Bytham/Castle Bytham)but I do believe that there are connections with other Sharpe families waiting to be found!. My branch appears to have been in the Castle Bytham area for generations! BTW with or without an "E". 3. The baptism of Sarah daughter of Elizabeth Towle is here http://www.lincstothepast.com/Records/RecordDisplayTranscript.aspx?oid=63104 2&iid=374996 Maybe there is a mistake on the recognizance? It seems too much of a coincidence that John Quickfall should be the father of two illegitimate children in the same year, both mothers called Elizabeth, and the Caistor minutes show that Elizabeth Towle had two others with different fathers, presuming that these three children were siblings. I found the baptism of Martha fathered by Cox whilst looking through the N Kelsey register, in 1830 I think. 3. More info. Tried searching for Towle in the LQS docs and came across putative father Thomas Cox in 1830. The Caistor Workhouse ref mentions three children in the same entry, Sarah Towle 10, Martha Towle 7 (dau of John Cox) and Wm Towle 4 (son of James Lester). The mother in the Thomas Cox case is Elizabeth Towle. Some detective work needs to be done here. Have you tried the North Kelsey baptism records on Lincs to the Past? Must dash, off to Archives. 3. I checked the Caistor Workhouse Minutes Vol. 1 where in 1837 there is mention of a Sarah Towle aged 10 illegitimate daughter of John Quickfall of North Kelsey. Could this be her? The eldest, William, was invalided out in 1876, the middle one, George, was invalided out in 1866 and the youngest, Thomas, died in Deal Barracks in 1871 of haematuria (blood in the urine) but the cause of this was not given on his death certificate. I have copies of the attestation papers for William and Thomas. They show that William had a big drink problem and he was discharged as suffering from imbecility. There is nothing in the paperwork about injury or illness. I did not get George's paperwork but I know he married, became a policeman and, I believe, emigrated to Canandaigua, New York with his wife and adult son. So, I think he cannot have been a long term invalid. I am wondering how three young brothers could be either invalids or dead within such a short time. Does anybody know if there were conflicts they could have been injured in during the period between 1860 and 1876? I suppose William's mental problems could have come from a head injury. He received a naval pension according to the 1911 census, so his imbecility is not likely to be alcoholic. I would appreciate any thoughts, as I have tried to Google wars etc without success. Some possibilities: India in the aftermath of the 1857 uprising 1866-7 Fenian Uprising in Ireland Second Opium War (China 1856-1860) 2nd and 3rd Maori Wars (1860 to 1866) 2nd and 3rd Ashanti Wars (1863 to 1874)

    3. Hi Anne, I wondered whether there was any way I could find this sort of report in the Barnsley, Yorkshire, newspapers. I have a huge brick wall in that my gg-grandfather was illegitimate - born in 1857 at the Barnsley Union Workhouse "father unknown" on the birth certificate. He took his mother's name. 3. Well, any of us who've been in the service, even in peacetime, can tell you it isn't the safest occupation!  Of course, I was in combat in a "conflict" which the politicians refused to call a war, and I've seen men sent home for alcohol or drug abuse.  I don't know if they thought they were doing him a favor by listing a cause for discharge that wasn't "drunk". My grandfather was in the Royal Army before the Great War and was kicked in the testicles by a  horse.  They discharged him as an invalid, but he went home to marry and have four children.  He was able to re-inlist during the war, probably because they were in need of experienced soldiers.     Lou ________________________________ From: themindlady <themindlady@gmail.com> To: ENG-LINCSGEN@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, March 20, 2012 12:51 AM Subject: [LIN] Lincolnshire Royal Marines Three Fountain brothers, born 1839, 1840 and 1841 in West Barkwith, joined the Royal Marines at Woolwich, Kent in 1860.
