    3. And further to my earlier message, what about the 1838 marriage of John Lill and Elizabeth Gilson in Willoughby cum Sloothby, Elizabeth being a widow and daughter of Robert Curtis. This matches a 1779 baptism in Mumby, neighbouring parish to Hogsthorpe. Also, John Lill left a will naming nephews as executors, which suggests he may not have had any children - none that outlived him anyway. Pauline On 26/01/2014 13:08, Jan Moon wrote: > I have no idea Bill = she was apparently married to my relative John Lill b 1783 Lusby, buried 27 May 1862, Sloothby, 19 Aug 1828, Wrawby. I found this marriage on both Familt Search and findmay past. The problem is I got Hogsthorpe as her place of birth from the 1851 and 1861 census, didn’t find her anywhere else. I think she may have been a widow when she married John Lill, she was 49 and he was 44, so chances are they were both widowed. Family Search seems to agree with this, there are a heap of children born to John and Elizabeth Lill, staring from the early 1800’s so that’s perhaps 2 other marriages to find. I am trying to find a marriage that could be her first one. There is a Hempstock family in Louth - the daughter Faithfull Hempstock married a George Edwards there in 1815. and there’s an Eve Hempstock married Louth 1826; there’s a Benjamin Hempstock marrying Elizabeth Jones in 1827 and a Thomas Hemstock marrying and Elizabeth Page in Crowle in 1821. I ! am wondering if Benjamin is her first husband? 3. Are you sure you have the right marriage for your John & Elizabeth Lill? Wrawby is not exactly close to Willoughby with Sloothby, and an 1837 baptism in Wrawby at FamilySearch suggests the John Lill marriage there may relate to a younger couple. It needs more investigation, but the surname Hempstock may be a red-herring. 3. Hi Jan I suggest familysearch but have looked for you and found nothing too likely. FreeBMD (for whom I was transcribing until my supervisor's email ceased to reply) only go back to 1837 when registration started. Parish records may be the place to look and I note someone has sent you a list of surrounding villages. I had a family of ancestors in Hogsthorpe and have a tapestry, dated 1856, done by my ggrandmother there. She was missing from the local baptism record but later I found her on FreeBMD baptised in St Leonards, on the coast nearby. Good luck! 3. Hi, Missing Lincs,     Do me a favor as your list adminstrator.  Put these things on your 2014 "To dDo List": 1.  Visit a war memorial.  Touch one of the names.  Tell us who you touched. 2.  Go to a village fest or event.  Belchford probably needs help with its "Gravity Downhill Challenge".  Your kids will love it, even if they are in their 40s.  Or find your own event somewhere.  Tell us what impressed you about the village. 3.  Clean out your e-mail folders.  Tell yourself that you will stick to it for two hours or four hours (or four weeks, if it takes that long!) and do it.  Even if you don't finish, that isn't the point.  Put up a sign if you have to, "I'm cleaning out my folders."  But back up the e-mail files, first.  You know you should.  4.  The next time you are browsing through a film of the census returns for some place outside of Lincolnshire, keep a record of the Lincolnshire strays that you find.  Then tell us about them.  It could be the ONE PERSON I'M LOOKING FOR!  (Well, actually, there's a whole bunch...) 5.  Take a few day trips with your spouse.  They probably haven't seen another human since you got them that new computer.     Lets all enjoy 2014.               Lou

    3. Thank you all so much...I appreciate such a fast response. You are wonderful. I must admit some embarrassment as, the moment I read Pamela's reply I knew that I knew that! A senior moment! I was contemplating the fact that her husband Edward Hooton died age 30ish Jun Q 1790 and Thomas baptized January 27, 1792 and was thinking that perhaps Edward was the father and young Thomas had died an infant. BUT...now we know different, don't we? The poor grieving widow! L PS Thanks for the parish register lookup...I'll check that out next. Linda, This is the entry in the baptism register for Crowland. (Near the bottom of the left-hand page.) http://www.lincstothepast.com/Records/RecordDisplayTranscript.aspx?oid=72209 0&iid=171374 This is the corresponding page of the burials register for 1792 (right-hand side of page). http://www.lincstothepast.com/Records/RecordDisplayTranscript.aspx?oid=51237 9&iid=171754 So it would seem that the entry refers to Thomas' baptism. 3. "b.b. = "base born", in other words illegitimate.  Before about 1800 it was just assumed that pregnancy outside of marriage was a "fact of life".  That tradition came down from our Germanic tribal ancestors.  But as the churches flexed their power, it became more and more a social stigma.  After all, everyone in a small village was pretty sure who the father was.  But nowadays, the term "bastard" is a pejorative, that somehow assumes the child is at fault.  It's a totally stupid way to judge a person.  I think the term should be reserved for those who are mean-spirited and want to put down others for something that they had no control over.  But that's just me.     Lou ----- Original Message ----- From: Linda Sokalofsky <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Cc: Sent: Wednesday, January 22, 2014 1:02 PM Subject: [LIN] Crowland:Hooton-Apthorpe Hi everyone Can someone tell me what the letters b:b stand for on the end of the following reference? 3. Free BMD shows her as Agnes Caroline. Quite possibly a mistake by the census enumerator when transcribing. She’s only on one census 1861, and is there as Agnes Catherine - however every other record I’ve found for she’s Agnes Caroline (marriage, census after marriage, death, etc) Any ideas?
