    2. Rod Strong
    3. Hi, This is a brief note to say that The Stamford Mercury has now been added to the British Newspaper Archives on-line web site. The Stamford Mercury, better known perhaps as The Lincoln, Rutland and Stamford Mercury is a very useful newspaper source for family and local historians researching Lincolnshire life. Access is charged by means of credits though I believe one or tow 'free goes' are allowed for newcomers to the site. Rod S.

    3. The first thing to do when anyone gives you conflicting information is to ask for the source of their information. Document proof is what you are aiming for. In this case both yours and your distant cousin's claims can be verified by obtaining the birth certificates of the relevant Charles/Charles Thomas. (Though I acknowledge that when you're dealing with twigs, it's not easy justifying the cost.) I would claim that your Charles is the one whose birth is registered in June quarter 1880, Spalding registration district. This district includes Pinchbeck where John, Lucy, other children and one-year old Charles are living in 1881. Charles Thomas is likely to be the one whose birth is registered June quarter 1881, Basford registration district. This would tie in very nicely with a Charles T Holmes (indexed on Ancestry as Charles J), aged one month, living in Bulwell in 1881, because Bulwell is in Basford registration district. Not sure why you can't find your Charles in the birth registration book. On FreeBMD, click on the 'specs' beside the entry, and then click 'view the original'. Ah, the reason you can't find it using Ancestry is because if you click on the 'index' link it says that his birth was registered in Mar quarter 1880 and shows you the image for that quarter. His birth was registered June quarter 1880. 1. [LIN] Charles HOLMES b 1880 or 1881 Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire
    2. Peter HOLMES
    3. G'day from Western Australia, Ardent followers of this list may remember that I have been researching the above born to John Thomas HOLMES & Lucy (GILL), as in about 1894 he travelled to South Africa and decided to stay after marrying Sarah Adelaide MCCAULAY in 1907 - they had 7 children.(mainly females and some unmarried sons and grandsons so the HOLMES name petered out!) My enquiry is: I believed from the English 1881 census that Charles was aged 1 year old and birth search on Ancestry tells me a Charles was born in March 1880 on the Spalding RD (although when I look for the original typed book list, he is not there!) The 1891 census has him living with his mother's parents in East Keal, as an 11 year old (= born in 1880). A distant cousin in SA has advised me this week Charles (with a previously unknown 2nd name "Thomas") was born 1st March 1881. In view of the above, I have my doubts about her suggestion and have pointed it out to her. He apparently died in May 1935 (in SA?). Can anyone throw light on my Charles' birth date etc., based on English or Southern African records? Peter Holmes Western Australia. 3. I did not find an obvious hit for your missing man in 1861 There are many reasons he could have been missed off or may be there but mistranscribed If you have the 1865 marriage it will show if he was a bachelor or widower, in the main most people told the truth on that score He appears to have used John B or John Burkett and married in 1865 as that so if he married earlier I would have expected him to use his full name but I did not find one for that His 1865 marriage is in the papers Stamford Mercury May 19 1865 At Grimsby on the 11th inst Mr John B GOODSON of Middle Rasen to Miss Eliz GOOSEMSN of Grimsby As is a mention in 1888 Nov 9th Stamford Mercury market Rasen Property Sale Offered by auction at the White Hart Hotel, Grange Farm formerly in the occupation of Robt MILLER but more recently in that of Mr John B GOODSON Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 11/02/2014 12:57, Jan Moon wrote: > > > > > I cannot find this man in 1861 - everything else I know about him, he > marries in Great Grimsby to Elizabeth GOOSEMAN in 1865 - but where is > he hiding in 1861? 3. Hi, Missing Lincs,     I've seen a couple of unsubscribe requests sent to the wrong e-mail address this last week.  It reminded me that a sometimes a spouse or adult child will try to unsubscribe people from lists, hopefully for valid reasons.  Do they know how?  Is there someone in your family who could take over your computer and your e-mail until the doctors brought you out of your coma?  Have you written them directions with passwords?     It's tough to plan for things like that.  I've seen a friend who's teenage daughter got on her mom's computer and sent out e-mail to all her male contacts saying she was single and "available".  I don't know what this girl was thinking, but her mom may never trust her again.     So, 1) change your password(s).     2)  Check your SENT mail folder to see if any odd e-mails ae there.     3)  Find someone you can trust and tell them how to unsubscribe you from your 22 mailing lists if you are incapacitated.     While I'm at it, how is that Will coming along?  Got it done?  Plan ahead, we don't live forever.         Lou (list admin.)

Canada -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Peter Atkinson Sent: February-08-14 10:09 AM To: eng-lincsgen Subject: [LIN] Family Tree software Hello List, My question is not related to Lincs, so hope any replies do not run on too long, or may be better to contact me off-line. I have been using Generations Grand Suite 8.0 to store my family history for many years under Windows XP and then Vista. I now have a new PC which has Windows 8 and it appears Gen Grand Suite is not compatible. Imported Gedcom files ok but cant now make amendments or additions. Has anyone had the opportunity to try any of the latest Family Tree software programs, and if so which ones are favoured. Any advice would be appreciated. 3. Hi, Peter,     Rootsweb (Ancestry) has a mailing list on Genealogy software that might be a more appropriate place to post such a question.  I suggest you troll the archives of that list and see what other people have been using and recommending.     Lou (list admin.) ________________________________ From: Peter Atkinson <[email protected]> To: eng-lincsgen <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, February 8, 2014 10:08 AM Subject: [LIN] Family Tree software Hello List, My question is not related to Lincs, so hope any replies do not run on too long, or may be better to contact me off-line. At the time I wrote to a non-subscriber who had lived in Lincolnshire at that time. As he has been traveling and did not access his email during that time, I have only now - better late than never - received a brief answer. -In 1943 and 1944, there were POW's working at the farm in South Kelsey. They were all German. In 1953 there were numerous former prisoners of war still in the area of North Somercotes. Some had married and lived in the village. Others still worked on the farm, and some lived in an old house on the farm, across from Pye's Hall. From what I remember, there were a mix of Polish, German and Ukraine POW's. Many later moved to Canada.- (I am also aware that some of the POWs were extremely kind to some of the children of the area.) Happy hunting!
