    2. Lance L. Piatt
    3. In Search of Deborah CROWE. It is said that she was born in 1773 in Long Bennington. However, that would make her younger than her children. I am wondering if maybe she was born in 1737 rather than 1773. Can anybody tell me if there is a listing for a Deborah CROWE there? Regards, Lance

    3. For those who are interested, there is a new series coming up on BBC Radio 4 called 500 Years of Friendship http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03yzn9h I came across details of it on the History Extra Podcast http://feeds.feedburner.com/HistoryExtraPodcast and during an interview with Thomas Dixon they mentioned that one aspect of the series discusses the Pals battalions of WW1, apparently they particularly focus on the Grimsby Chums, it was a brief mention but I thought some might like to bookmark the programme as it looks like it will be available on demand. 1. [LIN] Still looking for John TEAT b20 Oct 1760's birth
    2. Sara Reid
    3. My quest for my John TEAT (sometimes TEATE or even TATE), blacksmith of Ancaster's antecedents continues. I've done a lot of research on the one born in Baston in May 1760 and I still think he is the wrong one. I posted a version of this message a few months ago but at a quiet time and had no responses, so apologies for re-posting. Two of the newer facts I have on John TEAT b20 October 1760 (he has recorded his DOB himself), based on what he had written in his Prayer Book (detailed in my last post to this list) is that he had a sister who died in 1835 who had an illegitimate son who died aged 40 in September 1837. He doesn't record their names nor where they lived unfortunately. I've found some details for Stonesby, Leicestershire that may be a match. John TEATE, son of John and Alice is baptised there on 26 October 1760. He has a younger sister Frances bap. in Stonesby on 7 March 1762. Frances' son John TEATE (no father) was baptised in Stonesby on 8 April 1798. There is a death record for a John Teat in Melton Mowbray in 1837. The father or the John TEATE married to Alice (SHEPPARDSON) was Francis TEAT who married Mary AYSCOUGH in Great Ponton in 1721. My John TEAT b1760 married in Great Ponton (to Susanna NORTH in 1790) as well and the name Francis is used in the next generation. I've also found a reference to one of the Stonesby Teats being a blacksmith so it's looking positive. Most of this is obviously outside Lincolnshire, but my post to the Leics list wasn't very productive. It did occur to me that I'd heard of Stonesby before and checked Lincs to the Past where I had found John Teat's 1838 Will (image is now online). There is an Admon listed with similar details: http://www.lincstothepast.com/Admon---Teat--John--1838--------/753869.record ?pt=S but the place is Stonesby, Leics and not Ancaster, Lincs. Before I waste any time, energy and money getting a copy, can anyone advise me whether there is a possibility that this document would relate to a Lincolnshire Will. I'm puzzled why it would be included on the Lincs to the Past site if there isn't a connection with Lincolnshire. Any ideas? Sara

    3. PAR/1/7 is the reference given to the register by Lincoln Archives. I know the 1 refers to the record being a parish register and I think the 7 means that it's the seventh register for that parish. As for the missing years you will need to ask the Archives. [email protected] They omitted the last few pages from a pre-1837 marriage register; perhaps the same thing has happened here. If so they will upload the missing pages. In 1925 Betsy ran away to Australia with Charles Willerton , My father and 2 of his sisters went with their mother, one sister was married the other a spinster, When the ship docked in Melbourne my father changed his name to Tom Willerton. I was born Beverley Willerton as was my brother David. We didn't find out about the name question till I was about 21 . after my father died . At about this time I was thinking of going on a working holiday to England and getting an English passport. At the time you had to have a father or grandfather who was born in England, and I thought I was fine. I had my fathers birth cert, his passport with his Quickfall name , his marriage cert with his Willerton name and his death cert . But I could not prove that the man Tom Quickfall who got off the boat was the same man that married my mother. So I never did get that British passport. Bev on Bribie Island Goons ONS

    3. I have a bunch of people changing from Huckbody to Freeman. In the late 1830s Nathan Huckbody and his brother David were transported to Australia for stealing sheep. Nathan's wife, (Sarah (Mallowby) Huckbody had several more children, all of whom were called Huckbody. The oldest deserted from the British Navy in the United States and returned to the UK under the name Freeman and took his mother and most of his younger siblings and half siblings including my ancestor Richard to the US under the Freeman name. Freeman made as much sense as Huckbody, since they were not Nathan's children. Although the family story was that he claimed "I changed my name to Freeman because now I was in America I was a free man." 3. This is ironic, Victor. You have someone who became Markham after being born Briggs. I have a Markham born illegitimate in 1845, who became an Elsham - at least temporarily. Charlotte Elizabeth, whose mother (Jane Markham) married an ELSHAM and Charlotte is shown as Charlotte Elsham in the 1851 census. I don't have easy access to the 1861 census, so I don't know when she changed back to Markham, but she married as Charlotte Markham in 1864 (to Robert Robinson). Another case my grandfather was born illegitimate in 1862 and named George Henry Briggs. When his mother married, Charles Markham in 1865 he became known as George Henry Markham. A name he used when he married. All his descendants were Markham's (like me). I wondered if Charles Markham could be his father and married when he did. I decided to have a DNA test. The result was that there was no way I could be a Markham. My grandfather's father was possibly Polish. I jokingly said to a Polish friend that a Pole may have raped my great grandmother. However the friend sent me details that in the 1860's poles were persecuted and many fled to England. These included Poles of all walks of life included Counts. My DNA details are on the web site seeing if anyone will get back to me. Two people did but their markers were not enough. I will however always be known as a Markham. Victor

    3. Thanks, but we have ruled out Elizabeth KENT, as a widow, she married a William ATKIN in 1791. Elizabeth Kent was buried in Belchford 1798. But as you know, maybe further research will show a different scenario. thanks again, Karen On 17Mar2014, at 4:27 PM, Margaret Taylor <[email protected]> wrote: > Karen, > According to the Marriage Index of Horncastle Lincs there is a "possible " > earlier marriage of a William PORTAS to an Elizabeth KENT in Benniworth in > 1763. 3. Hi list, A cousin of mine and I are researching the PORTAS families in Lincs. Of all my gatherings over my years at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, I have just touched on Donnington on Bain PORTAS families. I can't answer her question. I went on Lincstothepast.com and didn't see any parish records to look through. So I turn to the smartest Lincolnshire researchers on the WWW. Benjamin MALKINSON - Widower and Elizabeth PORTAS - Widow / Both of Donnington on Bain were married 26 Aug 1782. Benjamin & Elizabeth had two children: Elizabeth bap. 10 Nov 1783 d. 16 Nov 1783; Mary bap 1786. My cousin writes (thought process at work): "So Elizabeth must have been about 40-45 when she gave birth. Benjamin MALKINSON was born about 1713 so presumably Elizabeth must have been a lot younger than him. Any ideas who this Elizabeth PORTAS could be?" Who was her husband (PORTAS) prior to Benjamin? He's possibly the missing link to her maiden name. Any help would be appreciated.
