    1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] John Johnson-Lucy Ellam - m. 1796
    2. Shirley Dumma
    3. Hello, I am new to this list. My 3great grandfather was John JOHNSON b. July 21, 1767 in Lancashire, England. He was married to Lucy ? and they came to Canada with their family. I have found (in the UK Vital Records Index) a John JOHNSON marrying Lucy ELLAM on Apr. 12, 1796 in Winwick Lancashire, Eng. I think there is a very good chance that this Lucy is the one that married my ancestor, as the marriage date of 1796 is just prior to the first of their children being born in 1797. Does anyone know anything about this family? If so, I have lots to share on the family after arriving in Canada. Shirley

    1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Mary Scurr Look-Up
    2. Ray Busby
    3. Hello All, While relatively new to this list, I have not posted any notices up until now. When next someone is searching in the Borthwick Institute in York and they have some spare time on their hands (ha, ha), I would be very grateful if SKS could check the Settlement Orders, Examination Certificates and Removal Orders for a Mary Scurr, in mid to late 1831, in Alne (or Tholthorpe). My brick wall for many years has been my great grandfather, John Scurr Busby and recent information suggests that he may have been the John Scurr who was the illegitimate son of Mary Scurr, Tholthorpe. The baptism for John Scurr took place in the Alne parish on 24 January, 1832. Mary was born in Thornton le Beans on 13 October, 1805 and apart from her christening on 15 October, 1805 in North Otterington, she too has been a very elusive person. I realise what a big 'ask' this is but would be truly very grateful for further information on this person. Good Luck to All, Ray Busby, In foggy Melbourne, Aust.

    2. Stephen Ratledge
    3. I am new to the Yorkshire and Lancashire lists. I am researching the name RATLEDGE / RATLIDGE. Most of my ancestors were from Northamptonshire. However, when I extracted all the RATLEDGE/RATLIDGE data from the 1901 British census. There are a large number of RATLEDGE/RATLIDGE in Yorkshire and Lancashire. Is anybody researching these names or do you have a connection? If so I would love to hear from you. 1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Mechanics Institute - Otley
    2. Catherine Fryer
    3. Hello, I was told quite a while ago while posting to another list (North Yorkshire) that I should write to the Archivist at the Machanics Institute in Otley for information. Last night while trying to find the correct address I discovered I wish to write to the Mechanics Institute but I'm obviously internet dyslexic because I can't find the address. Does anyone on this list think this would be a wise idea or have the address? I have a George Fryer baptised in Otley in 1808 with parents George and Mary Fryer. George Sr lists his occupation as banker and since there aren't too many occupations listed in the baptisms he must have been quite proud of this. Then I go to my husband's ancestor who was baptised William Henry Fryer at St. John the Baptist Hoxton (Hexton) Middlesex in 1840 but was born in 1818 City of London according to census records. His parent's are listed as George and Mary with George's occupation Banker's clerk. I also found a Margaret Fryer on the same film that was baptised in 1834 with the same parents. I'm trying to determine whether these Fryer's came from Otley. I have never found George and Mary Sr in census records but have found George jr and William. Couldn't find a marriage on the Otley film for George and Mary but it wasn't the best quality. Catherine Fryer

    1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] YKS Surnames List - Update - 6 April 2003
    2. Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens
    3. Dear Listers, First of all, a special thanks to the very many submitters who have updated their email addresses this week. Remember, updating your contact information is important, both to you and to those who wish to contact you, and it is solely up to you to keep your information up-to-date. When doing so, please remember to send me BOTH your OLD and your NEW email address so that I can correctly identify your submission(s). Again, I must remind everyone who wishes to submit a name of the proper way to do so. Most everyone uses the form that is provided on the link that you can find at the YKS Home Page at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/YKSlist/ or follows the instructions when his/her server refuses to forward the form. Unfortunately, this week, a significant number of submitters did not do so. I don't want to sound picky, but everytime someone tries to submit a name incorrectly, I have to return their submission and reply to them. This week, there were just too many blank or incorrect submissions. Besides, the mind boggles - if a person appears incapable of reading plain English, how can one trust them to enter correct information on their own genealogy trees? Below is the list of new submissions this week. Best regards to everyone, Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens YKS Surnames List Administrator http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/YKSlist/ With thanks to the other List Administrators who kindly post this. ............................ 1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Benjamin Stead
    2. George Frunzi
    3. I have finally found the name of my immigrant ancestor's father. Benjamin Stead was born ca 1803 in Yorkshire and baptized his children at Skelmanthorpe at the Wesleyan chapel. He left England in 1840. His father's name was also Benjamin, a farmer, who was born and died in Yorkshire, according to his grandchildren's bios. Since I have not found a link to the father, I thought maybe he was in a nearby county. Any clues?
