    1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Wedding photo in the Cabbage patch
    2. Peter Turner
    3. I have a photograph of my g'parents' wedding party taken in 1910. The group are assembled in the cabbage patch, that is the cabbages are in the foreground. This photo has always been referred to as 'the traditional photo in the cabbage patch', however when asked about what tradition, collectively nobody knew. I know this practice continued up until at least the 50s. Can anyone throw any light onto this 'tradition'? I have several replies vaguely referring to fertility but nothing definitive. 1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] THOMAS SMITH lookup
    2. Connie Hinckley
    3. Would SKS with access to the Yorkshire 1841 or 1851censuses please look up the THOMAS SMITH family living, I believe, in Leeds or the immediate environs? Unfortunately I know nothing about the family (my great-great grandparents) other than that they had a son named Thomas. In 1841 he would have been approx. 3, and therefore approx. 13 in 1851. If more than one Thomas Smith family meets these criteria I would appreciate learning of them all (e.g. name/trade/age of parents, their address and name/ages of siblings). Any suggestions for further researching such a common name (lacking birth and marriage records) would likewise be appreciated. Connie Hinckley Alameda, CA, USA

    1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Clough
    2. Cathy Berger
    3. The 1851 census for Egremont, Cumbia Co, shows Isaac Clough, age 32, papermaker, born in Bolton, Lancastershire. I learned that from his marriage certifcate that his father was Thomas, also a papermaker. In the same census sheet is Thomas Clough, age 24, papermaker, born in Stretford, Lancastershire. I am guessing that this may be a brother to Isaac. Does any one have any Cloughs by any spellings from Lancastershire? Can you help me with this family? Cathy

    1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Nellie who at Hestholme Farm, Aysgarth?
    2. John Mason
    3. Hi fellow listers. Would anyone be able to tell me how to find out who the persons living at Hestholme Farm, Aysgarth, in 1947 would be. I have a copy of a letter dated 13th July 1947 postmarked Leyburn from a Nellie and it also mentions a Tom. It was addressed to John (Jack) Mason in Briefield, Lancashire. I am hoping that this is the Nellie Ballinger that is a daughter to Japheth (Jabey) and Alice Ann (nee MASON) but what is Nellie's married name?? Any leads on finding these persons would be most appreciated. Kind regards in advance. John. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ John Mason, Newcastle, NSW, Australia. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tana Willis-Johnson has kindly donated her collected copies of church photographs, mainly for the Halifax area (and mainly taken by Chris Rothery). I list below her photographs which are not from the immediate Halifax area, and you will find on the Genuki Halifax parish page the list of the churches for Halifax town and the townships nearby - even these I have had to split on to separate pages as there are so many of them! There are quite a few of these yet to be dealt with. I have also added nearly a megabyte of data for Sheffield as you will see below. 1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Dean Family Lancs/Sheffield
    2. Margaret Batten
    3. I am searching for my great grandfather William George DEAN born about 1854 in Sheffield. In 1901 he was living in Plymouth Devon, he was a Master Cutler. In 1861 there was a William DEAN age 6 living in Sheffield with parents John and Catherine. John was from Lancs and Catherine was from Ireland. In the 1871 census for Sheffield there is the following entry: Peter FINNERTY, head, mar, 38, spring knife cutler (employing 1 man and 2 boys), Ireland Galway Mary CASTELLO, sister, mar,46,Ireland Galway Will DEAN (no rel listed) unm, 16, spring knife cutler, Sheffield. I have not been able to find Peter, Mary, or William in the 1881 British census. I was wondering if they went to Ireland. William George DEAN was living in Plymouth in 1894 and spent the rest of his life there until his death in 1930. (Please note: there was a William H Dean living in Sheffield who was a file cutter, this is not the William I am looking for, there were 2 of them both born in Sheffield in 1854) Any help would be appreciated.
