    1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Surname HOLMES (aka DAUBENEY, ANSON, BRANDRETH)
    2. Symonds
    3. I am a new member, and my interest lies in Benjamin HOLMES, woolsorter, who married Harriet Smallpage, spinster, Leeds, St. Peter's, 24 December 1827. Four children were born in England: George A., Charles, Helen, and Jane. The family is believed to have resided in Sutton-in-Ashfield. They arrived in New York City on 9th April 1835 with surname BRANDRETH. While in England, he also used the surnames of DAUBENEY and ANSON. In New York he was engaged in pill manufacturing. 1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] YKS Surnames List - 5 October 2003 Update
    2. Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens
    3. Dear Listers, Below is the list of surnames submitted this week. For newcomers, just a reminder that the YKS Surnames List is a free, voluntary service that provides genealogists and family historians for Yorkshire a place to list the names they are interested in and a means to contact others who are researching the same names. These are not my names and I do no lookups nor do I post any messages, so please don't ask me. To look up names, go to the URL given below with my signature and you will be taken to an Index. Check on the group of letters that correspond to your surname, then use your find tool to see whether your name is listed. If you are interested in posting one or more of your surnames, click on the link for instructions. Please read them carefully. Use the form if your server will accept it. If you have problems, especially if your server is aol.com, follow the instructions for manual submissions. The rules are very simple and I ask you to pay attention to them, particularly if you are sending manual submissions: -Type ONLY THE SURNAME in capital letters and type it in the body of your email. Please do NOT send me a surname in the title of your email and expect me to guess the rest. -Place names - Yorkshire ONLY. All locations outside Yorkshire will be deleted by me. Separate locations with a comma, not a dash/slash/period or other character. - Contact name - Type a contact name for yourself in the body of the text - don't expect me to guess at your name from your return address. Submissions without a contact name will not be accepted. You don't have to include your full name - a forename or nickname will do. - Email address. Type your email address in the body of your email. Don't expect me to guess that your return address is the one you wish others to use. Many submitters have been known to use other email addresses to send in their submissions - friend's, office, etc. - Repeat all the above for EACH surname you are submitting, even if you are submitting several surnames in the same email. These rules are explained on the YKS home page. Read them carefully, please. Happy hunting everyone! 3. Ann, we all know that census info can be a little wide of the mark, but if the birth year varies between 1817 and 1833 on the census, you might consider that you are looking at two different Mary BROWNs. 1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Pendleton??
    2. Hi, I don't know if anyone can help or has any suggestions as to where I can find help but here goes:  My ancestor Mary Brown gave her maiden name as Wilkinson on two of her children's birth certificates.   When she married John Brown in Manchester cathedral in 1846, her name was given as Brunt, a widow.  Father's name on the certificate is Edward Tomlinson.   Her address given on the marriage cert is just Pendleton.  On all the censuses that I have found her on, she says born Pendleton. Her age varies on each census to give a birth year of between 1817 and 1833, so I am wondering where to go from here unless I ask for 1821 & 31 census look ups for a family of Tomlinson in Pendleton to see if she is there anywhere. Any suggestions will be very much appreciated Thanks Ann - Bristol UK

    1. Re: [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] BIRCH/BULCOCK MARRIAGE
    2. Martin Bentley
    3. Hi Wayne, Marriage records after 1837 SHOULD list the age, condition (bachelor or widow), occupation, abode, father's name and his occupation. The only way to find out for sure would be to order the record from the Register Office covering that area. 1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Genuki Yorkshire Announcement and updates
    2. sarah Mccray
    3. List: Below is a copy of the email received from Colin Hinson with the latest Genuki Yorkshire Announcements and updates. It would be to everyone's advantage to take a look at this site as there is a lot of useful information there for anyone doing research on ancestors from Yorkshire. Again, if you have any questions concerning the Genuki Yorkshire site, please address them to Colin Hinson. Sarah McCray ENG-LANCS-YORKS list administrator --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Folks, I am very pleased to be able to announce that Colin Blanshard Withers has donated the contents of his book "Yorkshire Parish Registers" to Genuki. This is an extremely valuable addition to the Genuki Yorksire web-site, as I'm sure any of you who have used the book will agree. My thanks to Colin for this. Over the past weeks I have been doing various "clean up" jobs on the Genuki Yorkshire site in order to make it easier for me to maintain. In addition to this, I've written the software to split Colin's book data into the various ancient parishes and to generate the relevant pages containing this data. You will find links into the "YPR" data from under the heading "Church Records" in each Ancient parish page on the Genuki Yorkshire site. The addition of these page brings the total for the Genuki Yorkshire site to over 12,000, so if you are new to the Genuki Yorkshire site, please take the time to have a look at the various pages concerning "Important Information", defintions of terms etc. linked to from the top of the main Genuki Yorkshire page, as this should make your navigation of the site a lot easier. As this message goes out, I am in the process of uploading all the pages for the YPR data, but I don't have control over the Wakefield area pages which Angela Petyt maintains. She will no doubt update the links in her pages in the near future. In addition to the above there are a few updates to the pages too - see below my signature. I've no doubt missed some, so my apologies to those who submitted the information if this is the case. 1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] YKS Surnames Update 30 September 2003
    2. Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens
    3. Dear Listers, Sorry about the delay in posting this week's list, but I was "Up the Douro" checking on this year's grape harvest and boy does it look good! Port lovers, please note ... Genealogically also it was a very successful trip as, thanks to a chance email several months ago, I was put into touch with a long-lost relative of my husband's who this weekend, at the age of 72, visited the country his father grew up in for the very first time ever. His father died when he was a small boy and his family had lost touch with the rest of us in Portugal so we had a great time getting to know each other and teaching him about his family! Not too many new submissions this week but lots of email changes. Thanks everyone for your contributions. 1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] YKS Surnames List - 21 September 2003 Update
    2. Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens
    3. Dear Subscribers, Well, that was some housekeeping exercise! 72 surnames were deleted either because they were duplicate entries (same submitter, different emails) or they bounced. I am still waiting to hear from some submitters whom I wrote to informing them of duplicate entries. If you are one of those and haven't replied, please note that all your entries will be deleted after 30 September. Remember, it is up to each and everyone of you to keep me informed of any changes in your emails. Bouncing emails will not be tolerated. I had an incredible number of submissions this week - 115 in all. Unfortunately, 50 of those were duplicate entries. In other words, quite a few of you repeated your submissions. Please don't, it takes a lot of time to check all of these. If you need to change your email addresses or add information to your submission(s), you have to write to me and I will gladly make the changes myself. There is no form for this. Another notice. I went through the Master List with a fine tooth comb (a virtual one!) and removed numerous Lancasters, Lancashire, Liverpools, etc., etc., etc. Please remember, the list is for Yorkshire only. The place to mention other connections, both in the UK and abroad, is on one of the genealogy lists or in correspondence with other submitters. Not here. The list of this week's new submissions is below (all 66 of them).
