    2. brian JOHNSTON
    3. Hi, I have re-subscribed to the list after a good while off. I wonder if anyone can help me? Most of my ancestors were based in and around the Lancashire area, but one family ended up in St Petersburgh, Russia, and most of the children were born out there, between 1850 and 1860. All of these children were christened at The British Chaplaincy. What is the best way to get hold of their birth certificates and/or christening documents? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks Janet Johnston

    1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Rideal family / Lancashire
    2. Sylvia Binch
    3. Hi, I would very much like to find more (background) information on the following family: George Rideal, born around 1836 in Latchford, Cheshire, son of George Samuel and Elizabeth Rideal. George married Louise Talma on 3 Jun 1869 in St. John Church, parish of Manchester. Louise was born in Brussels, Belgium around 1845, daughter of Amedee Talma. At the time of their marriage George was a widower, living in Hulme, and Louise a spinster, living in Broughton. George had (at least) 7 children, all born in Manchester: 1. Harry, born around 1863 2. Emma, born around 1864 3. Ruth, born around 1867 4. Alfred, born around 1868 5. Amidee, born around 1871 6. Pauline, born around 1872 7. Romeo, born around 1873 They all appear on the 1881 census. George is listed as a "Solicitor in Practice" and they are all living at 5 Plymouth Grove, Chorlton On Medlock, Lancashire. Presumably Amidee, Pauline and Romeo are his children with Louise. I am especially trying to find out when and where George and Louise died. Any help will be appreciated. Kind regards, Sylvia Binch The Netherlands _________________________________________________________________ Play online games with your friends with MSN Messenger http://messenger.msn.nl/

    1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] YKS Surnames List Update - 12 January 2004
    2. Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens
    3. Dear Listers, I know that spamming is annoying and frustrating and that many have changed their emails to avoid it. We, on the YKS Surnames List, have changed our presentation to help protect your privacy. Unfortunately, many subscribers who have changed their email addresses have not remembered to tell me. This week alone, 10 bouncing emails were reported to me which resulted in my deleting 25 entries. One bouncing email alone was responsible for the deletion of 10 surnames. Aside from the nuisance value to me because of the extra work this creates, it is extremely uncourteous to fellow submitters. I am extremely grateful to all those submitters/researchers who have informed me of the bounces - please continue to do so. Do remember. When you wish to change your email address, you must contact me. There is no form for this or for any other changes to your entries. Please send me BOTH your OLD and your NEW emails when contacting me so that I can be certain that I have identified the correct entry. After all, there are over 20,600 surnames on the list. If bounces continue to be reported at the same rate as last week by the end of January, after February 1 I will begin posting the names and emails these belong to. I don't mind making the changes, so do contact me. If you have recently changed your email and aren't sure whether your told me, do contact me and I'll check. Please use the YKSsurnames@yahoo.com address. Nuff said. Below, the list of surnames submitted this week. All the best, Magdalena ........... 1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Brett family who moved from Leeds to Stretford/ Sale Area
    2. Has anybody got information of the Brett family who moved from Leeds to the Stretford or Sale area in the 1880s or early 1890s? According to my Gran John D Brett (b 1855) had an organ building company but I have been unable to trace them through this time period. By 1901 his son Leonard H Brett (b1884) was an errand boy living with his widowed mother  Martha E Brett (b Martha Radcliffe in Bradford, 1876), who was a charwoman in Stretford. Meanwhile her older sons Charles Edward Brett and Walter E Brett were working in the trawling fleet from Humber ports.  Information from anyone with access to the Leeds, Stetford or Sale 1891 census or Trade Directories would be very helpful.  Thanks Sean

    3. Hi listers, My Gt.Grandfather Tom WEBB played for Wombwell football club in the season of 1909-1910. They seem to have won that season. I have a photo of the team, but no info. Any listers, had relations that may have played in the team ? Before Tom, went to the great war he would have worked at Wombwell main colliery. Is it possible to find records for Wombwell collery, ie, when opened or closed, personnel etc. I know it's a shot in the dark, but I know very little of Tom WEBB. Thanks. Maurice. (wales).

    1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Robert/Richard Maurice Tinkler
    2. Pat Williams
    3. I'm hoping someone can help me with a small problem. A friend just gave me their overseas copy of The Weekly Telegram - Issue No. 649. There is a review of a book entitled "Empire Made Me" by Robert Bickers. It is a biography of a Robert Maurice Tinkler. He was a Lancashire lad who joined the Royal Fusiliers in 1915, age 17. He died at age 42 (1940) in Shanghai when he was bayoneted by some Japaneses marines whom he had confronted when they wanted to round up his mill workers. Evidently, it caused an international incident. One of my great grandmothers was Emily Tinkler who was born in 1845 in Woolsthorpe, Lincs. I am conducting an unofficial one name study of Tinklers, I have recorded every Tinkler entry from the Civil Reg indexes from 1837 to 2000. I think that the subject of the book was called Richard Maurice Tinkler. The birth of a Richard Maurice Tinkler was registered at Ulverston in the 4th Qrt of 1898. The Rootsweb FreeBMD site confirms this. I can't find any birth registration for a Robert Maurice Tinkler. Before I contact the newspaper, I was wondering if anyone knew of a birth for a Robert Maurice Tinkler. There is always the possibility that the reviewer misquoted the name. Does anyone know if the authour, Robert Bickers, is related to Richard Maurice Tinkler. In the 1901 census, there is a 2 year old Richard Tinkler living with his parents, Alfred & Elizabeth (nee Shuttleworth), at Hawkshead. Alfred was a hotel keeper. They had a younger daughter, Edith, born in 1900. I believe that Alfred's parents were Richard & Mary Ann HORN. Richard Maurice's sister, Edith Whalen (nee Tinkler), was mentioned in her aunt Fanny's wiill. Incidentally, I'm not related to these Tinklers. Pat Williams :-) Toronto, Canada

    1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] BARRETT, STEWART, NEAL, PINNINGTON/PENNINGTON families
    2. Hello everyone. I am new to this, and I please, please, please need some help!!! I am looking for information about my BARRETT family. My g,g,g grandfather THOMAS BARRETT was born in 1837 in Lancastshire, England according to his obituary in Michigan, USA. I have tracked his parents' marriage certificate to Wigan, Lancashire. They were married in the Wigan Parish Church September 4, 1838 (not sure about the date discrepancy with Thomas's birth). Their names were ABRAHAM BARRETT, listed as a labourer age 29 in 1838, and JANE PINNINGTON/PENNINGTON listed as a weaver who was born Nov. 11, 1811 and christened Nov. 24, 1811 at All Saints Church, Wigan, Lancashire. Abraham was listed as living at Standishgate at the time of his marriage and his father was listed as ABRAHAM BARRETT, a miller. Jane Pinnington was listed as living on Wigan Lane and her parents were THOMAS PINNINGTON/PENNINGTON and NANCY "Ann" BOLTON. Abraham and Jane had other children, in addition to my g,g,g grandfather Thomas. They were JOSEPH BARRETT, b. Nov. 10, 1849 and at least one! other son who stayed in England according to her obituary. I think she may have had two other children also, as a US census stated she was the mother of 5 children. The 1838 marriage certificate is the only documentation I can find of this family in England. I know Thomas's son ABRAM BARRETT was born May 27, 1857 in Yorkshire, but not sure where, according to his obituary in Michigan, USA. I have not been successful in finding a listing in Yorkshire on any of the BMD's or 1837online.org. Does anyone have a complete 1831, 1841 or 1851 surname list for Lancashire and/or Yorkshire. Maybe if I can track my ancestors down in the Census I can find more information???? Any other suggestions would be much appreciated!! Thomas married a woman named MARY NEAL and had WILLIAM and MARY JANE in addition to Abram. Jane (Pennington) Barrett remarried at some point before moving to the USA to a man named WILLIAM STEWART born about 1824. Any help would be much appreciated!!!! I don't know where to go from here. Thanks in advance and I hope you all had a very happy new year!!! ~Stephanie Saunders
