    1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Florrie Hague
    2. Bev McKinnon
    3. Hello All: I am appealing to anyone who would have access to obituary archives for Lancashire residents, most particularly in the Ribbleton/Preston area. My ABSOLUTELY fruitless search for my grandfathers living relatives have brought me to this request! Iam looking for survivors of Florrie Hague, who lived I believe, until at least the sixties, at 82 Fir Trees Ave Ribbleton/Preston Lancs. She was most likely a Catholic as my grandfather's family was, if that's a help. My grandfather was Robert Joseph Hague son of Joseph and Jane Smith Hague. He was born in 1891 in Preston. Florrie, I believe, was a niece, and would have been about 4-6yrs in the photos I have circa 1917. So she was perhaps born about 1910/11-1913. I am not certain who her parents were but she had a married sister, Lily, but we did not know her married name. I would be most appreciative if someone could help me with this as I live in Canada and it is super difficult to follow through as many records need to be physically looked at. I am coming to Britain in May and would be delighted to meet family. Any help would be so welcome. Beverley Hague McKinnon

    1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Enoch PEARSON, Bookhouse, Tinsley
    2. Christine Benson
    3. Hi All, I am new to this list. My ggg-uncle, Enoch PEARSON was born in Morley, Cheshire (near Wilmslow). I have just found him in 1881 and 1891. He is aged 41 in 1881 and 49 in 1891! In both cases he is living in Altrincham, Cheshire. He married Sarah ?, 42 in 1881, from Brookhouse, York. I can find a Brookhouse in Lancs but not in Yorkshire. Have the boundaries changed, or is there another one. He has a daughter Annie, 13 in 1881, born Tinsley, Yorks. There is also a nurse-child from Sussex in the family, so there could be a connection there. Can anyone tell me the following Am I on the right lists - there are a lot of Yorkshire ones. What resources are available for the marriage and birth of Annie? I have looked at the Yorkshire resources in UKBMD but my knowledge of Yorkshire geography is not good enough to tell me which may be relevant. What is the 1871 (and possibly 1861 and 1851) census like? Is it indexed? Is a lookup in Tinsley reasonable? (It seems the obvious first choice.) Any suggestions? Thanks very much for any help. Christine

    1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] Solving Problems With AOL
    2. sarah Mccray
    3. List: Recently there was a problem with mail-returns on addresses of those using AOL. It may have been resolved so quickly that AOL users weren't aware of it, but for list administrators, we received mail returns on all AOL addresses. The following article appeared in the Rootsweb Review and I thought I would pass it on. Sometimes this problem occurs with other ISP providers. Sarah McCray ENG-LANCS-YORKS list administrator ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. NEWS AND NOTES. 1a. Solving Problems with AOL AOL and RootsWeb's mail-delivery issues were resolved after amicable communication and work with the Internet Service Provider. RootsWeb thanks the postmaster group at AOL for its work with us on the various issues that were involved. AOL users are encouraged to re-check their subscriptions to mailing lists at PasswordCentral -- click on the PASSWORD tab at the top of the RootsWeb Home page: http://www.rootsweb.com/ Information and instructions for mailing lists can be found by clicking on MAILING LISTS tab at http://www.rootsweb.com/ 1b. AOLers and RootsWeb: New List and Some Tips Since AOL subscribers make up a large percentage of our mailing list members, RootsWeb has created a new mailing list that is being announced today. The mailing list is named AOLers-RootsWeb. It is to assist AOL users with questions related to their use of the RootsWeb mailing lists. Hopefully this new resource will help to forestall any future difficulties from arising between AOL and the RootsWeb mailing lists. The new list may also prove helpful to RootsWeb list administrators who are not AOL subscribers in answering questions for their list members who do use AOL. It will provide a place to direct AOL users where they can obtain accurate up-to-date information and assistance with RootsWeb mailing list issues that are specific and unique to AOL users. You will find this new mailing list categorized on the mailing list webpage at http://lists.rootsweb.com under OTHER/RootsWeb Support/ The direct link is: [This is a 2-line URL; copy and paste carefully]: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/RootsWeb_Support/ AOLers-RootsWeb.html During the past week or so RootsWeb mailing list subscribers who use AOL (America Online) as their ISP (Internet Service Provider) to receive list mail experienced a disruption of service that lasted several days. Family history researchers, who are often addicted to their daily "fix" of mail from their favorite RootsWeb lists, began sending e-mails to their lists in an attempt to ascertain whether or not the lists were working, for some, alarm set in. Don't panic if RootsWeb's list mail doesn't appear to be reaching your mailbox as it normally should. Instead, do the following: 1. Check the HelpDesk's yellow announcement box for news of any technical problems at RootsWeb or with your ISP's delivery of list mail from RootsWeb. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ or click on HELP tab at the top of any RootsWeb page. 2. Check your currently subscribed lists here: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ or click on the PASSWORDS tab at the top of any RootsWeb page. 3. Check the threaded mailing list archives to view the current month/year messages for your lists at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ 4. Contact the list administrator for help or information by writing to: LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com (replace the word LISTNAME with the actual name of the list -- using no -L or -D). NOTE: If there is a general problem involving RootsWeb mail delivery to a specific ISP and the list administrator to whom you are writing also uses the same ISP, he/she probably will not receive your inquiry for the duration of the problem with that ISP. 5. Contact your ISP's tech support representative and explain that RootsWeb list mail is not spam and this is e-mail you wish to receive. Enlist the support of your ISP in resolving the matter. Internet Service Providers should be more than willing to assist you -- their paying customer -- so that you are able to receive the mail you want. Here is what NOT to do if you suspect you are not receiving your mailing list messages: 1. Do not send repeated messages to the list asking if the list is working or if anyone has received your message. 2. Do not send any "TESTING" messages to a list. Remember that just because you are not receiving a message you have sent to the list doesn't mean that other list subscribers are not seeing your repeated messages and becoming annoyed by them. The mailing lists are for genealogical research for a specific subject and not for test messages. Use the above guidelines instead to help resolve any non- receipt of mail problems. You will find guidelines concerning non-receipt of RootsWeb list mail in a recent issue of the RootsWeb Review. You might want to print out this information and save for handy reference. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/review/20040107.txt

    3. Dear Listers, Just to let you know that I won't be doing a list update next Sunday as I will be somewhere between Paris and Baltimore. I wll keep email contact as usual (ah, the beauties of the Internet!) but you may have to wait a few days for the update. Below, the list of 60 new submissions this week. As previously announced, I am now posting the names and emails that have bounced this past week. I remind everyone that it is up to each an every submitter to keep me informed of any changes in your email addresses. 1. [ENG-LANCS-YORKS] PLATT 1700 - 1800's
    2. Ann and George Brickner
    3. I am interested in the PLATT surname especially in the 1700 - 1800's. They were in the Saddleworth area of West Riding, Yorkshire, and many migrated to the Oldham area of LAN. I am most particularly looking for parents of George PLATT b. 7 Jun 1829 supposedly Oldham. Although I have checked church records for over 50 churhces in and around Oldham, I have yet to find him. Family history says his father MAY have died 1848-1852, leaving a widow. George "jumped ship" in Philadelphia, PA, USA abt 1848, and I know much of his whereabouts after that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ann annbrick@thewavz.com

    2. Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens
    3. Dear Listers and Submitters, As I warned everyone, from February 1st onwards, all bouncing emails will be posted with the update. Thank you everyone who has updated his/her email in the past week and special thanks to all those who have informed me of bounces. Please continue to do so. Also, I informed everyone that as of Feb 1st I would post the names of anonymous submitters and delete all those submissions. 38 submissions were deleted and the names and emails are listed below the new submissions. Anyone who recognises him/herself in this list will have to re-submit the surnames in question. This may seem extreme, but I have attempted to contact these submitters several times in the past and received no reply. Do remember, if you do not include a contact name with your submission (nickname, forename, full name, whatever strikes your fancy), you submission will NOT be accepted. 3. Hi Listers. Hope someone can help my slight confusion. I recently applied for info on death cert. Apr/may/jun, 9a 203. Wellington. It was for Tom WEBB. The only place I can find on a map is Wellington Hill, Nr Leeds, which agrees with the 9a volume listing. However, my reply said that the Leeds office does not have entries for Wellington? (they may have thought Shropshire) Also another entry (marriage) Apr/may/jun, Leeds, 2c 762. For Tom WEBB, who married a woman named VARLEY in 1948 ?. I think 2c volume does not look right for leeds. My vol/page numbers were taken from GRO index book. Can anyone help, or advise. Thanking you. Maurice WEBB
