    1. Genuki Yorkshire updates and additions
    2. sarah Mccray
    3. List: Below you will find the Genuki Yorkshire updates and additions which I have received from Colin Hinson. Any questions or comments concerning these should be addressed to Colin Hinson. Sarah McCray ENG-LANCS-YORKS list administrator ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Folks, First my apologies as I should have posted some updates some time back to avoid the list getting so long, however I've been busy with other things (like making a living<g>) and forgot to do so. These are mainly (but not all) Church Photographs. May I remind you that if you want to know where somewhere is in Yorkshire that you will almost certainly find the answer at: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/Where/ I know that a lot of people use these pages already (judging from the number of hits), but there are also a lot of "Where is" questions on the mailing lists which could be answered by having a look on the above pages - don't forget to read the notes! Additionally, for those confused with terms such as Wapentake, parish, etc., please see the "Definitions of terms" pages (there's a link to these on the "important information" page, a link to which appears at the top of the Genuki Yorkshire page. Finally, Maps: I have maps showing wapentakes, maps showing the parish boundaries, and a detailed map of Yorkshire showing nearly all the places mentioned in the above "Where is it in..." pages - see under "Maps" on the main Genuki Yorkshire page. But don't forget also that David Ford has an Old Maps site at: http://www.yourmapsonline.org.uk >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Updates and additions Places in brackets are the relevant (ancient) parishes. Unless otherwise specified, the churches are C of E. Don't forget the surnames interest list for Yorkshire: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/YKSlist/ ------------------------------------ Sue Johnson: WRY: Halifax: An article and photograph of Grindleston Bank. ------------------------------------ Bill Henderson: Church photographs: WRY: Rawmarsh St. Mary Rawmarsh Methodist Rycroft St Nicholas Rycroft Methodist Leeds St. Peter ------------------------------------- Shelley Stephenson: Transcriptions from the 1857 post office directory (Kelly's) for the following parishes in the East Riding: ERY: Halsham, Harpham, Harswell, Helperthorpe, Hemingbrough, Hilston, Hollym, Holme on Spalding Moor Kirkella, Lund Sancton, Scorborough, Scrayingham, Seaton Ross, Settrington Sherburn, Skeffling, Skerne, Skidby Walkington, Warter, Watton, Welton, Welwick. -------------------------------------- Colin Hinson: All the above added to data base and formatted for the web. 2. Morning Listers, New one-off posting. William Holgate (1830) Halifax Mary Holgate (1830) Leeds Arthur Holgate (1867) Leeds The daughter of the above (mary Webster, nee Holgate) was living in Barrow with her husband (also from Leeds) in 1891 and Arthur (above) was still living there in 1901 so I am anticipating this is possibly where they could have been residing in 1901. Many thanks Jennifer

    1. Learning the craft of genealogy online
    2. Kylie Veale
    3. Fellow genealogists, Have you ever used the Internet to learn about genealogy methods and resources? Taken a genealogy course online? Read some 'how to' articles? Then I would like to hear from you. I am an Australian Ph.D. student who is currently writing a book chapter for an academic Virtual Learning Environment publication - my chapter is about using the Internet for genealogical education. I would therefore love to hear from you, fellow genealogists, about any Internet-based content you've used for genealogy education. This includes online courses (free or fee), how-to's, articles/columns, newsgroups, BBS, chat, mailing lists, forums, or even personal web pages that publish learning material - anything online that helps you in learning the craft of genealogy. Your comments on the following is of utmost interest: What are your favourite learning outlets on the Internet? How often do you use them? Can or did you find what you needed online? What are your learning successes? What could be better? What do you look for in genealogical learning on the Internet? If you would like to participate, your comments are extremely welcome. Please send your comments to me directly at research@veale.com.au before Saturday 1st May 2004. I thank you in advance for your participation in this academic research. Kylie Veale P.S. Names and email addresses will be protected and are therefore not included in the publication. Copies of the paper will be made available to interested participants on request, after the book has been published. ----------------------------------------------- Kylie J. 3. Hello Listers I wondered if someone could help me verify an address from the 1881 Census. According to the census my ancestors lived at 98 Up Portland Street, North Meols, Lancashire. I have searched for the address on the 1901 census but it isn't there. Could sks please verify if this is a valid address, or has the 1881 enumerator entered it incorrectly?
