Good morning all, I am new to this list, having just discovered an ancestor who says she was born in Pendleton. Her name was Mary WILKINSON, and she is on the 1881 census in Cardiff as Mary Nicholson, age given as 48,, born Pendleton. She would hve been born around 1833, so is there anyone with access to the parish records for Pendleton or the 1841 census ,who could see if she is there anywhere? I have her son's birth certificate, a John Henry Brown, born in Cardiff in 1862. Mary is on his birth certificate as Mary Brown, late Tomlinson, formerly Wilkinson, so I guess she married a Tomlinson, was widowed, married a Brown, was widowed again and married a Nicholson. I have further information on John H.Brown (jnr) if anyone needs it. I would like to find out if she had other children with her first husband, ??? Tomlinson, who I am guessing she might have married in Lancashire somewhere. By the time John Brown married in 1882, his father, also John Brown was deceased. Any information you can give me on Mary WILKINSON will be much appreciated Thank you Ann (Bristol UK)
Hi everyone, Attached is the list of 118 surnames that were submitted during the past week, a total of 118. 8 names were summarily deleted because of repeated bouncing emails. This week I have had to send several replies to submitters who had either not read or not completely read the instructions for submitting surnames. I am always happy to add surnames but I find it most aggravating to have to return requests for resubmission. Please remember that this is a totally voluntary list that is free of charge. The only costs involved are my time and I would ask everyone to respect that. Can anyone on the list please tell me if indexes are available of Wills held at the Borthwick Institute or elswhere (or wherever), for Wills referred "up the line" because property was held in more than one area. I am trying to find a WIll for John Watson of Preston whom I believe died in the period 1802 -8. His father's Will was probated at Richmond, his brother's at Chester, but I think John's property holdings may have been a bit more complex. Any assistance or advice would be appreciated. Don Watson Toowoomba Australia.
Hello everyone, I'm new to this list but have been researching in the ERY area: Hull and Beverley. This request is really a shot in the dark. The only info I have is:- My grgrandmother Mary MCLOUGHLIN aged 23, a cotton spinner, married on 29/11/1852 to Alfred HAIR aged 22,a cabinet maker, at Sculcoates Register Office, Kingston upon Hull. Her father is shown as Hugh MCLOUGHLIN - labourer. Later census show that Mary was born in Ireland. The family story is the family came to Lancs from Ireland and that there were 2 older brothers. She is not listed on any of the Hull 1851 census indexes. If anyone has access to any Lancs 1851 census index could you do a lookup please. Best wishes Peter
Hello listers, I am afraid that I sometimes forget the many new subscribers who regularly joint our respective lists and who haven't got a clue as to what the Yorkshire Surnames List is and how it can help with your research in Yorkshire. The Yorkshire (YKS) Surnames List is a service that offers researchers a chance to post the surnames, and surnames only, they are looking into and others the chance to contact them directly for information. I do not do any kind of lookups myself nor do I post any messages. Go to: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/YKSlist/ and you will get to the YORKSHIRE Surnames Home Page. There is an alphabetical listing there and all you have to do is go to the group of letters that corresponds to the name, or names, you are interested in. You will find a list of other researchers. Click on the email address that is given and you will get a pop-up that will enable you to contact that researcher directly. It is up to each and every submitter to keep me informed of any change to his or her email addresses. Sadly, not everyone does and emails occasionally bounce. When this occurs, I double-check the situation and if there is no change, summarily delete all and any entries with the faulty email address. If you wish to post one or more surnames, please use the form that is indicated on the home page. If for some reason your server or browser does not forward the form, please follow the instructions for aol.com users - do read them carefully! You can amend, alter or delete your submissions at all times. There is no form for this. You have to contact me directly. Please remember to give me the OLD information together with the NEW as otherwise I might not be able to identify your entry. You may also wish to post your query(ies) on a genealogy list. Go to the Genuki pages to find the names of the several genealogy lists for Yorkshire. http://www.genuki.org.uk Happy hunting, Magdalena Contact email for the YKS list: YKSsurnames@yahoo.com
Hello listers, Thanks to everyone who paid attention to my words last week. I didn't have a single duplication with the 96 new surnames submitted! Some listers, in their enthusiasm obviously, do not read the instructions for submitting names to the very end. Although the great majority of ISP's will forward the form we give you, some never do, such as aol.com, and some occasionally don't. If for some reason you are having difficulties in sending the form, either because of your browser or ISP, please follow the instructions for aol.com users. I really would appreciate it. Below, the list of 96 surnames submitted this week. Happy hunting everyone! Looking for information on Charlotte Churchill Toplis born 1849, and Arthur Churchill Toplis born Dec 1852, both born in Chorlton. I am looking at the parents of these 2, as my g-g-grandparents were Thomas Toplis and Hannah Churchill. If possible, I would appreciate a look-up of the family in that area. I last saw them in Nottinghamshire, but am sure they have a larger family than I saw there. Part of this family (Fleetwood, Charles S. and Isabella) ended up in Canada - I have yet to figure out how, who and when. Thank you Charlene
