Dear All, I'm wondering if anyone has a copy of the book; "Catholic Missions and Registers 1700 - 1880, Volume 5, North West England" by M. Gandy. And if they would be so kind as to look up the name, McCanna. I found it in Salt Lake Morman Library but I live in Chicago. Or if anyone knows where it might be located any other place in the US. Thank you very much. Fran
Hi, Fran, I saw your note about Michael Gandy's book "Catholic Missions and Registers 1700 - 1880, Volume 5, North West England", 2nd Edition, 1998 (ISBN 0 9528879 2 4). This is the best book for finding the Catholic missions in the north west of England and for listing the registers and their whereabouts. Sadly from your point of view this book does not deal with the contents of the registers, though it tells you what transcripts/indexes existed in 1998. There are two main series of transcripts of Catholic registers in central and north Lancashire, the early volumes of the Catholic Record Society (CRS) and recent microfiche publications of the Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society (LFHHS). The CRS Publications were in the early years of the last century and cover most of the early missions around Preston and further north including most of Lonsdale (see http://www.catholic-history.org.uk/crs/index.htm ). These books are out of print, but some have been included in the IGI. The LFHHS publications (see www.lfhhs.org.uk >Shop>Microfiche) cover some of the Blackburn area and other parishes around Preston. The Preston registers have been deposited in the Lancashire Record Office (LRO) except for those of St. Wilfrid/St. Mary, for which there is an unpublished transcript in the LRO. There are also some microfiche published by the Liverpool & South West Lancashire FHS for Catholic parishes in Liverpool (see http://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/ ) Incidentally one of Marge SELF's earlier notes mentioned McCANNA. This is not a common spelling of this name in the Preston area, where it is usually rendered McKENNA. Hope this helps.
