Hi Jim, You make mention of the 1881 Census on film of the enumerators booklet. I did not know this film existed. I can only find the typed transcipts which were used to compile the CDs. Where can I find the film of the original returns. I want to to see the original return for 21 Lyon St in Blackburn for 1881. Hopefully the place of birth will be more detailed than just "IRELAND" - but slim chance I know. Hi, Martin, You wrote > You make mention of the 1881 Census on film of the enumerators booklet. I > did not know this film existed. I can only find the typed transcripts which > were used to compile the CDs. All the UK Census were put onto film for public use. These are usually available in UK Libraries - no joy to you I know. Many years ago, before computers were available, the Federation of Family History Societies in the UK (FFHS) had a project for each Society to prepare Surname Indexes for the Census of its own area. This was patchy in its completion. Then in the mid-1980s, there was a decision for a joint project between the Mormon Church (LDS) and the FFHS for the transcription of all the data in the 1881 Census. This took many years and it was only in about 1996 that the results for last and biggest county, Lancashire, were published on fiche. In 1999, the CD version was published. I have been told that when the CD version was published, the LDS withdrew the film copies from their Family History Centres (FHC) in the UK, on the grounds that the CD was available. The film version is necessary to check dubious transcriptions, though you will be told that the transcription has been checked. I have found LANCASTER entries resident in Stand, to the south of Bury, who are reported as being born in Bingley. Bingley is a town in Yorkshire. However, checking the 'original' film, it is seen that they were born in Ringley, the next township to Stand, probably less than a mile away from where they were living. If you ask strongly enough, you may be able to get your FHC to obtain the 'original' film, but I am not sure of this. You continue > Hopefully the place of birth will be more detailed than just > "IRELAND" - but slim chance I know. I would suggest that your chance of any more information being available is virtually zero. The dubious transcriptions I mentioned are usually readings of bad hand writing, e.g. the word 'annuitant' being rendered as 'accountant' etc. Your best bet for finding the place in Ireland is to check the other Census years, or to look for other sources. Hope that helps Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN, ENG) ----- Original Message ----- From: "SUNNER Martin" <[email protected]>
Hi Jim, I agree in what you say about the 1881c on CD not being a true copy. I found Blackburn, Lanark, Scotland for a family of 10 people. Obviously this should have said Blackburn, Lancs. Cheers, Lynn in Preston

Hello Martin, I have the 1851 Surname census for Blackburn if that is any help to see if their name was there. Not a lot of use I know. Joan at Devon
