Working backwards, Lancaster (as a name standing alone) is a City on the River Lune, in the north of Lancashire (or County of Lancaster). People often get confused between the city and the county. In your question, I think you are referring to the county. Leigh is now part of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, and Pennington (not Penninghame) is a smaller place to the south of Leigh.
