    3. Hi, Eileen, You wrote > William BOLTON, last known address in 1891-1896 was 102 Wilbraham St. > Preston. Born in 1865 and married Mary Jane Devlin. This was my > grandfather, no other family information available. As you have an address in 1891, it is possible that someone can check the 1891 Census for you. It has been surname indexed by the Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society, and this can be purchased on microfiche. Details are available from their web site at www.lancashire-fhhs.org.uk NB two 'h' in fhhs. The 1881 UK Census has been transcribed by FHS volunteers and published on CD by the Mormons (LDS). I have checked this transcript for William BOLTON resident in Preston and for Mary J. DEVLIN resident in Preston, with the following results. Page I would strongly advise that you check these against the film of the original enumerators' books, particularly if you have access to an LDS Library, their film reference is quoted. The occupations that may not be clear (Cotton)Card Master At Mill - I think this person would be in charge of the carding engines in the mill. The cotton arrived as compressed bales, was opened and cleaned. Then it went through the carding engine to align the fibres to make it usable for spinning. Card Tenter Mill - operated the carding engine, 'tended' it Frame Tenter - operated a spinning frame, a continuous spinning process as distinct from the mule which was intermittent spinning. Shuttle Pipe Glazier(O) - I have not met this term before and cannot guess what he did. Cotton Weaver / Linen Weaver. - the different fibres were woven in different mills. My guess would be for the second William as being closer to the age you mention and more likely to associate with a spinning operative. Moor Park Avenue was (and probably still is) a very nice address. If you look at www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk you will find reference to a map of Central Preston ca 1909. I am not sure where Albion Street West is, but Essex Street is off St. Pauls Road which runs south to north to the west of the Royal Infirmary, and Wilbraham Street runs between Ribbleton Lane and New Hall Lane. You can buy these maps on-line. If you have access to an LDS Library, they may have, or will be able to get, films of the UK Marriage indexes and you could look for a Devlin marriage in Preston (Devlin being the less common name) and then see if there is a Bolton marriage with the same reference. I would GUESS that the marriage was in an RC church. I hope this helps. If anything is not clear, send me a note. Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN, ENG)
