I wonder if anyone can help me with any information or ideas with regards to my grandfather and grandmother. I have been trying to obtain their marriage certificate via Bigfamily.com and they have drawn a complete blank. As for my grandmother Maude RANYELL I can find absolutely nothing about her. Hubert WELLS and Maude E. RANYELL were (I think) married on 31st August 1903, this is gleaned from a small printed card that has three folds, the left hand fold has the name Maude E. Ranyell with an arrow going through the name (as per Cupid) and the right hand fold has the name Hubert WELLS also with a cupid's arrow through the name, the centrefold says 'With the compliments of Mr & Mrs Hubert WELLS 40-41 Church Street, Preston, August 31st 1903'. This may not have been anything to do with their wedding, but it is the sort of compliments slip that one would send with a piece of wedding cake for example. I believe that Hubert was a Quaker and it may have been a Quaker marriage ceremony. They had three daughters - Margaret, Gwendoline and Frances. Maude died of breast cancer about 1913. Hubert was a Master Draper and had a drapers shop in Preston. In 1920 Hubert was living at 9 Penwortham Hill, Penwortham, Lancashire. Hubert's father was Alfred WELLS who in the 1881 census is described as a farmer of 350 employing 7 men and 6 boys, Mother: Mary WELLS, dwelling: Farm House, Isham, Northampton. He had three sisters, Mabel, Priscilla and Mary Sophia. Hubert's birthplace is Isham, Northampton, presumably the farm house. Hubert's birth certificate shows that he was born 22 Mar 1874 in the sub district of Wellingborough in the county of Northampton. Entry No. 146 Register Book of Births 29. His mother is named as Margaret ALLEN. Hubert died 29 Aug 1948. John Calland. Researching: CALLAND, WELLS, NEEDHAM, ALLEN, KENYON, RANYELL, WALMSLEY.
