    3. Hi All, I am currently trying to find more details on a JOHN TAYLOR born Preston 1810. I have been told that his wife's maiden name was ELEANOR ATKINSON and they married August 1837 at Helsington, Westmorland John Taylor's occupation according to the 1881 Census ws Head Grocer and Druggist. At the time of the Census he and his wife and three children Eleanor, Alfred and Ada Louisa were all living at 43 Highgate, Kendal, Westmorland. I have not been able to find birth details for John Taylor or marriage details if they did marry for his children. In 1881 they were 39, 35 and 31yrs so perhaps none of them married. I would be most grateful if someone could suggest where I might find John Taylor's birth details and who his parents were and if he had a younger brother Edward born 1818. 3. Hi, Judy, You wrote > I am currently trying to find more details on a JOHN TAYLOR born Preston > 1810. The first question is how reliable is '1810'? The IGI (1992 fiche edition) lists John TAYLOR, son of Geo. & Alice TAYLOR, christened 15 Oct 1809, in St. John's, Preston. I think this entry is from a Parish Extraction programme by the LDS. It is probably from one of the volumes published by the Lancashire Parish Record Society. It may be worth checking the entry on Family Search, or on the computer at your local LDS Family History Library. There MAY be other details. > I have been told that his wife's maiden name was ELEANOR ATKINSON and > they married August 1837 at Helsington, Westmorland As this marriage took place after July 1837, it should be recorded in the General Register Index. Helsington, Westmorland, is a small village and going through GENUKI site ( www.genuki.org.uk/big/ ) I found The search for places enumerated in the 1891 census produced the following result. County District Sub-District Place PRO piece number LDS Film Westmorland Kendal Milnthorpe Helsington RG12-4334 6099444 This suggests that checking the registers for the Parish Church at Kendal may produce the marriage. If not, then you will need to work outwards to neighbouring CofE parishes, particularly working south towards Milnthorpe. It would have been a sparsely populated area (still is, relatively) and I don't know the foundation dates of the local churches, - you could probably find those through Genuki. However, do not forget that the marriage may have taken place in one of the non-conformist chapels in the area. Hope this helps Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN)
