Hi All, I will be viewing the Preston 1861 census . film # 543083, on Saturday 14th July, which covers roughly the south west of Preston ( I will be looking for Hudson Street.) I may have time to do a few look-ups if all goes to plan. So if anyone wants a look-up let me know within the next 2 days I will see what I can do. Cheers from NZ, Maureen
Is there such a thing as a 1871 Census?? I am looking for the Singleton Family, James, Letetia and John (b. 1864). I would love to know if he had siblings. By 1881 he had a child (John) of his own, don't know the wife - still searching. Thanks.
Hi, Patricia, The English Censuses have been taken every 10 years since 1801, except for 1941. However, the first one of any use to family historians is the 1841 Census, and the first one of real use is the 1851 Census. The 1881 Census is the only one that has been transcribed in its entirety, and is now available on CD. Much but not all, of the 1851 Census has been indexed by surname. Some of the other years have been indexed, etc., but it is very hit or miss. You are fortunate in that all the Census returns for Preston have been indexed, except for 1841. These can be obtained from the Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society and the details can be found on www.lancashire-fhhs.org.uk The indexes give the surnames and the folio numbers on which they appear. You will need to remember that there are two sides to a folio. If you find the names you seek you can then order the film of that Piece from your local LDS FHC. Hope that helps Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN, ENG)
Hi, again, OOOOPs! I forgot to mention that there is a 100 year closure rule on UK census information and that the 1901 Census will not be available until early next year. It will be available on the internet on a 'pay-to-view' basis. I think details are available on www.pro.gov.uk Sorry if I raised anyone's hopes Jim lancaster (Bury, LAN, ENG)
