    3. Dear Listers, I would be most grateful if anyone over there has access to the 1851 Census (I am not easily able to get to a Local History Centre here). I am trying to trace the whereabouts of my great-grandfather, THOMAS BENNETT, in 1851. He was born in 1833 and is, I (almost) believe, the son of RICHARD BENNETT and MARGARET KELLETT, Richard being a farmer. A Thomas (aged 7) is with them on the 1841 Census. I have Thomas's residence on the 1861 and 1881 Censuses but am trying to trace where he was in 1851 (he doesn't appear with Richard and Margaret on that Census). Thomas became a "Master Watchmaker & Jeweller" and therefore he was possibly apprenticed in 1851 (aged 17). A very kind and helpful Lister has sent me an extract from the Preston directories for 1848 and on it there is, amongst the Watch & Clock Makers a Jonathan Simpson at 20 Lune Street Preston. Thomas Bennett married Margaret Bamber in 1855 and was at that time living at Grimshaw Street Preston. Thomas and Margaret Bennett were living with their family at 21 Lune Street on the 1861 Census and at 20/21 Lune Street on the 1881 Census. On the latter Thomas is described as a "Master Watchmaker & Jeweller Employing 3 Men & 2 Boys". Did he, I wonder, take over the business from Jonathan Simpson. Is there anyone who could trace Thomas Bennett on the 1851 Census given these clues? As ever, eternally grateful to the people on the List who usually come up with the answer! Pam New Zealand
