    3. Hello Jean, You ask > If anyone has any information about the availability of the 1841 & 1851 censuses for PRESTON on c.d. or in any other form I would like to hear from you. The 1851 Census for Lancashire has been indexed by Surname by the various Family History Societies (FHS). The indexes for the area east of a line roughly through Preston and Bolton to the River Mersey have been published jointly by the Manchester & Lancashire FHS (MLFHS) and the Lancashire Family History and Heraldry Society (LFHHS). The indexes are by Surname only and were originally published as booklet for individual places. As the booklets went out of print they were re-published as microfiche. I am not sure if the Preston Index is still available as a booklet or is only available as microfiche. Full details of these are available on the society web-sites at www.mlfhs.org.uk and www.lfhhs.org.uk In both cases there is a shop section and you will find the details there. With regard to the 1841 Census, a similar Surname Index is available from the LFHHS on microfiche as above. As far as I know there are no CD versions. If you buy the microfiche, you can usually use them in your nearest local library that has a microfiche reader. Hope this helps Jim Lancaster (Bury, Lancs.) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jean Garforth" <boudicca@boudicca.karoo.co.uk> To: <ENG-LANCS-PRESTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 31, 2004 8:52 AM Subject: Re: 1851 Census - Name Index?
