In the early 1920's in or around Preston, Lanc. there was an association called "Thomas Sumner Secretary Weavers Assoc." Does anyone have information about this association, especially the person Thomas Sumner? Any information at all would be greatly appreciated. Joyce (Canada)
Joyce, The families I am researching left Preston for America in the 1890's. Sorry I can't help you there. I am researching the following families: 1. descendants of Thomas and Hannah Anderton Wareing married in 1803 in Brindle 2. descendants and ancestors of John and Ellen Jackson Wilkinson married in April 25, 1847 at Chapel of St. Wilfred, Preston 3. descendants and ancestors of Noah and Catherine Holden (Holding) Cooper married about 1848. 4. ancestors of John and Elizabeth Schofield Eccles married May 17, 1864 in St. Augustine Church, Preston. I have my family tree out on World Connect. I welcome any information regarding these families. Hi, Joyce, You wrote, > In the early 1920's in or around Preston, Lanc. there was an association > called "Thomas Sumner Secretary Weavers Assoc." It is very likely that this was the"Amalgamated Weavers' Association", a trade union, and that "Thomas SUMNER" was the Secretary of a Branch at the time, probably the Preston Branch. There was a Spinners' Association which was quite separate. In 1969 the AWA published a book "A History of the Lancashire Cotton Industry and the Amalgamated Weavers' Association" written by Edwin Hopwood. This is an account of the industry and, more particularly, the work of the AWA. Unfortunately it only names Presidents and General Secretaries and does not have an index. I think that the Lancashire Record Office in Preston has some copies of the annual reports of the AWA, but that is not of easy access to you. Hope this is of help Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN)
