Hello List, Here's a link to the Lancaster County libraries: http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/libraries/ Selecting the 'Your Catalogue' option will take you to: http://lclcat.lancashire.gov.uk:8001/www-bin/www_lclcat which will allow you to search the collections of member libraries on-line, including the Harris Library. The holdings and locations of GRO census publications will show up if you search on 'census' and the date range. Good hunting, Brian Cooper bcooper@mts.net Manitoba, Canada
Lancashire Record Office also told me that the GRO covers all counties whereas they only want to deal with records for Lancashire. Thanks to everyone who pointed me in the direction of the Harris Library. You are nice people. All I've got to now is find Preston! Pat, Clayton-Le-Woods.

If only the staff of the CRO had bothered to tell me that the Harris library also holds the 1881 census fiche for Preston. I called a day trip there short after being be told they only had the transcription (which contains glaring errors for my family). I was pretty mad when I got all the way home, checked online where the 1881 fiche were held and found that they were kept at the Harris Library (just around the corner)! -- Stuart Morgan http://www.tase.co.uk

Hi, Pat, Welcome to Preston. Given half a chance my wife would have us move back there!!! You wrote > I've just discovered that the County Record Office in Preston doesn't have the GRO index's > Where do I go to look at them? The simple reason is that they are available in the Harris Library in the town centre. Before family history became as popular as it is today, the Harris Library started to buy the film/fiche and so it continued to build its collection as and when money was available for the benefit of its users. The Lancashire Record office on the other hand is concerned with the preservation and conservation of records, rather than printed or duplicated material. When the two institutions became part of the same authority in 1972, it would have been seen as a waste of public money to duplicate this provision. This also happens in reverse in Manchester. The main Manchester Library, Manchester Central Library, has a big collection of local and family history material, but NOT the General Register Office Indexes - because the Greater Manchester Record Office has purchased them. Have a look at the Reference Library in the Harris Library, you will be surprised at its holdings. Hope this helps Jim Lancaster (Bury, Lancs.) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patrick Molloy" <patrick@windflower.eclipse.co.uk> To: <ENG-LANCS-PRESTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 07, 2004 12:12 PM Subject: GRO Indexs.
I'm sure this is a daft question, but I have just moved to Preston from the Midlands so you'll have to excuse a dumb Brummie. I've just discovered that the County Record Office in Preston doesn't have the GRO index's (which was a bit of a surprise). Where do I go to look at them? Pat.

Hi all, I've just subscribed to the list as I'm helping an elderly gentleman here in Australia. He has a marriage between Joseph WALKER and Esther HIGSON in St. John's Preston on 18 Feb 1824. The gentleman has no details on the birth or death of Joseph or Esther. He would also like to try and obtain their parents names. Can someone please point me in the right direction to assist him? Thank you Jackie Queensland Australia

Fellow genealogists, Have you ever used the Internet to learn about genealogy methods and resources? Taken a genealogy course online? Read some 'how to' articles? Then I would like to hear from you. I am an Australian Ph.D. student who is currently writing a book chapter for an academic Virtual Learning Environment publication - my chapter is about using the Internet for genealogical education. I would therefore love to hear from you, fellow genealogists, about any Internet-based content you've used for genealogy education. This includes online courses (free or fee), how-to's, articles/columns, newsgroups, BBS, chat, mailing lists, forums, or even personal web pages that publish learning material - anything online that helps you in learning the craft of genealogy. Your comments on the following is of utmost interest: What are your favourite learning outlets on the Internet? How often do you use them? Can or did you find what you needed online? What are your learning successes? What could be better? What do you look for in genealogical learning on the Internet? If you would like to participate, your comments are extremely welcome. Please send your comments to me directly at research@veale.com.au before Saturday 1st May 2004. I thank you in advance for your participation in this academic research. Kylie Veale P.S. Names and email addresses will be protected and are therefore not included in the publication. Copies of the paper will be made available to interested participants on request, after the book has been published. ----------------------------------------------- Kylie J.
