    3. A big thanks to Christine for finding this family in the 1871 census in Lytham, Lancashire! Paul and Mary Catterall had children Ann Eliza and Frederick Peter besides Thomas Turner. Does this connect with anyone's family? Shirley

    1. Paul CATTERALL and Marian TURNER
    2. Shirley Siltala
    3. I've learned that a friend's great-great grandfather is Paul Catterall, married to a Marian Turner. Their son was Thomas Turner Catterall, born April 1853 in Preston, and immigrated to the United States in 1880. Based upon this information, would it be possible for anyone to do a 1861 and/or 1871 census lookup for this family? Thank you, Shirley in Tucson, Arizona

    2. Joan Hall
    3. Hi, Could SKS please do a look up for me at Preston CRO. According to the IGI my ancestor was born the same day her parents were married. I have checked the register for the marriage and that is right all I need now is for someone to check the Grindleton church register for the birth of Jenny HARGRAVES 23rd September. The year on the IGI is 1800 but that is the year her parents married. We all know the IGI can be wrong. I know for sure her fathers name was John. Thanks. Joan in Devon

    1. John WARD & Family
    2. Mal & Gladys Woods
    3. Hi List, I am trying to locate my Great Great Grandfather and ascertain his age. His name is John WARD and I found him on the 1881 census in Salford and his age was given as 53, birthplace Retford, Nottinghamshire. I recently found him on the 1871 census in Hulme, Manchester and his age was given as 46. So he could have been born anywhere between 1825 & 1828. I sent for the Retford parish records and found only one WARD family in West Retford. There was a John but he was born in 1819 but in 1825 there was a Jonathon. I am trying to find out if the John I have as my rellie was really called Jonathon or was he the John born 1819 and he lied about his age, big time. The reason I am writing to the Preston list is to see if anyone has a copy of the 1851 census of Preston and could look the family up for me. He worked on the railways so he moved around a fair bit. From the 1871 census I have this:- John Ward Head age 46 Railway Porter Born Retford, Notts. Mary Ann Ward Wife age 40 Born Wigton, Cumbs. Elizabeth Ward Dau age 18 Born Preston, Lancs. Isabella Ward Dau age 15 Born Carlisle, Cumbs. Margaret Ward Dau age 13 Born Carlisle, Cumbs. Robert A. Ward Son age 11 Born Manchester, Lancs. John J. Ward Son age 9 Born Manchester, Lancs. Jasper Ward Son age 6 Born Salford, Lancs. William Ward Son age 3 Born Salford, Lancs. Emma Cooper Dau age 22 Born Nottingham, Notts. John Cooper G/Son age 4mth Born Nottingham, Notts. The Elizabeth would have been born around 1852 so they could still be in Preston. I realise that this is a big ask but anything is worth a try. 1. Christ Church, Preston - Parish Registers and MIs
    2. Michaela Morgan
    3. Hi All, Thanks to Brian, it now seems possible that some of my PARKINSONs may have attended Christ Church in Preston. He identified the following: "1470818 Title Parish registers, 1857-1900 Authors Church of England. Christ Church (Preston, Lancashire) (Main Author) Marriages 1897-1900 Particulars of deceased persons interred in the burial ground 1831-1896 Register of services 1880-1890 Register of official parochial register 1894-1900 FHL BRITISH Film 1470818 Items 1-4" Lancashire Records Office file number PR 2952/1/1-3, 8-9, I am interested in the following marriage: PARKINSON, Thomas Age: 22 Wife: Elizabeth Isabella HOGGARTH Age: 25 Marriage Date: 1 Nov 1899 Recorded in: Preston, Lancashire, England Husband's Father: Zacharias PARKINSON Wife's Father: John HOGGARTH Source: FHL Film 1470818 Dates: 1897 - 1900 And I would also like to identify where my PARKINSON ancestors in this area were buried eg. Zacharias PARKINSON died on 17 Dec 1884 at Fulwood Hall, Fulwood. I wonder if he may be buried at Christ Church also. Does anyone have access to the parish records or the MIs to check? Also, how do I find out which areas MIs have been done for as I also have Margaret HOGGARTH who died in Liverpool (probably Everton) on 23 June 1887 that I do not know where she was buried. St Lukes is a church which has come up on some marriage records and is a possibility. Thanks Michaela Morgan Hobart, Tasmania, AUSTRALIA

    2. Michaela Morgan
    3. Hi Chris, Thanks for the thought, however both the families only moved into the area in the late 1870s and early 1880s. I have found some of the cousins christenings at St. John the Baptist Broughton but either the film did not cover the time of the marriage or I couldn't find it at this church. Broughton is the church that my grandmother referred to as the family church during her childhood (1909 to 1923) but I am having trouble access more recent records, i.e. into the 1900s to check it out. Anyone have any suggestions Michaela Morgan Hobart, Tasmania, Australia -----Original Message----- From: christine [mailto:christine1945@blueyonder.co.uk] Sent: Sunday, 26 September 2004 11:42 PM To: Michaela Morgan Subject: Re: Identifying churches from marriage references Hi Thought I would be clever and Look for Elizabeths birth assuming the family may have used same church ah well that backfired as I see she was born/christened Liverpool Sorry Chris One solution would be to buy a copy marriage cert online and that will show where they married ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michaela Morgan" <michaela1@netspace.net.au> To: <ENG-LANCS-PRESTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 26, 2004 11:48 AM Subject: Identifying churches from marriage references > Hi All, > > > > Some time ago I recall a message on one of the lists that I have subscribed > to which talked about determining the church that an event took place based > on the GRO Index reference. 2. Brian Cooper
    3. Hi Michaela, The key to finding the church is in the FHL Film number. Go to the LDS Family History Library catalogue search page at http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp and select Film/Fiche Search. Enter 1470818 and you will get the film contents, which includes images of registers for Preston Christ Church, Holy Trinity and St. Thomas. Your source is for marriages between 1897-1900, which matches items 1-4 on this film. These are for Christ Church. You can see details of the film by clicking on the " View Film Notes" button in the top right corner of the frame. It gives you this information: "1470818 Title Parish registers, 1857-1900 Authors Church of England. Christ Church (Preston, Lancashire) (Main Author) Note Location Film Baptisms 1857-1900 Marriages 1864-1897 FHL BRITISH Film 1470817 Items 16-20 Marriages 1897-1900 Particulars of deceased persons interred in the burial ground 1831-1896 Register of services 1880-1890 Register of official parochial register 1894-1900 FHL BRITISH Film 1470818 Items 1-4" Also note the Lancashire Records Office file number PR 2952/1/1-3, 8-9, on the Title Details page, which could be useful if you have the opportunity at some point to visit the Office.
