Hi All, To start off the New Year I'd like to post my WILSON brick wall in Preston: Jane Ann WILSON b. ~1854 in London to Robert and Jane V. WILSON d. ~1925 Her father Robert was an engineer or wheelwright. She appears in Preston about 1875 on Vauxhall Road working as a domestic servant. In 1881 she is at 12 Robinson Street, and at 19 Robinson Street in 1898 at the time of her marriage to a William ATHERTON. William was a widower previously married to an Elizabeth MORRELL. He was born ca. 1842 to Walter ATHERTON and Ann AINSWORTH of Samlesbury. The 1901 census shows William and Jane Ann living at 19 Robinson with her mother Jane V., aged 72, born London. Jane Ann's children were Margaret b. 1875 and Joseph b. 1880, both in Preston. They took their mother's surname. The father's identity is behind the brick wall. Jane Ann may have had a sister, Isabella b. ~1851 London, who married a John DUCKETT in Preston, 1870. If anyone has her on the 1891 census, or has any other information that might knock a hole in this wall, it would be very much appreciated. Best wishes for 2005! GRANDMA AND THE FAMILY TREE There's been a change in Grandma, we've noticed her of late, She's reading history or jotting down some date. She's tracking back the family, we'll all have pedigrees. Oh, Grandma's got a hobby, she's climbing Family Trees. Poor Grandpa does the cooking now, or so he states, That worst of all, he has to wash the cups and Dinner plates. Grandma can't be bothered, she's busy as a bee, Compiling Genealogy, for the Family Tree. She has no time to baby-sit, the curtains are a fright. No buttons left on Grandad's shirt, the flower bed's a sight. She's given up her club work, the serials on TV, The only thing she does nowadays is climb the Family Tree. She goes down to the Courthouse and studies ancient lore, We know more about our forebears than we ever knew before. The books are old and dusty, they make poor Grandma sneeze, A minor irritation when you're climbing Family Trees. The mail is all for Grandma,it comes from near and far, Last week she got the proof she needs to join the DAR. A worthwhile avocation, to that we all agree, A monumental project, to climb the Family Tree. Now some folks came from Scotland and some from Galway Bay, Some were French as pastry, some German, all the way. Some went on West to stake their claim. Some stayed near by the sea. Grandma hopes to find them all as she climbs the Family Tree. She wanders through the graveyard in search of date or name, The rich, the poor, the in-between, all sleeping there the same. She pauses now and then to rest, fanned by a gentle breeze, That blows above the Fathers of all our Family Trees. There were pioneers and patriots mixed in our kith and kin, Who blazed the paths of wilderness and fought through thick and thin. But none more staunch than Grandma, whose eyes light up with glee, Each times she finds a missing branch for the Family Tree. Their skills were wide and varied, from Carpenter to Cook, And one (Alas) the record shows was hopelessly a crook. Blacksmith, weaver, farmer, judge, some tutored for a fee. Long lost in time, now all recorded on the Family Tree. To some it's just a hobby, to Grandma it's much more, She knows the joys and heartaches of those who went before. They loved, they lost, they laughed, they wept, and now for you and me, They live again in spirit, around the Family Tree. At last she's nearly finished and we are each exposed. Life will be the same again, this we supposed ! Grandma will cook and sew, serve cookies with our tea. We'll all be fat, just as before that wretched Family Tree. Sad to relate, The Priest called and visited for a spell, We talked about the Gospel, and other things as well, The heathen folk, the poor- and then- 'twas fate, it had to be, Somehow the conversation turned to Grandma and the Family Tree. We tried to change the subject, we talked of everything, But then in Grandma's voice we heard that old familiar ring. She told him all about the past and soon was plain to see, The Priest, too, was nearly snared by Grandma and the Family Tree. He never knew his Grandpa, his mother's name was ..Clark? He and Grandma talked and talked, outside it grew quite dark. We'd hoped our fears were groundless, but just like some disease, Grandma's become an addict--- She's hooked on Family Trees. Our souls were filled with sorrow, our hearts sank with dismay, Our ears could scarce believe the words we heard our Grandma say, "It sure is a lucky thing that you have come to me, I know exactly how it's done, I'll climb your Family Tree. Author Unknown.

Melissa, some years ago I knew the descendents of these people personally - it is very unusual name and the SMELTZERS were all related - the one I knew was called Vic SMELTZER was he was a friend of my parents and went to their church. I think they moved to another area, and we are going back a long long time now, they may no longer be alive even, I dont remember their ages in relation to my parents, who are now nearly 80. The telephone directory has two people of the name living in St Helens still - www.bt.com perhaps a letter to them would help you with information as well. I do remember that Vic Smeltzer wrote some books, aimed at children, the titles all started "thank you for" and had different themes - a drink of water, a pair of jeans, a bar of chocolate, etc etc and it showed how these things were produced and why children should thank God for them and the people involved in them. They were nice people, and well liked in the local community Liz Parkinson >Hi, Melissa, > >You asked about SMELTZER in Lancashire., a range of people and a range of >dates. Hello Philip, I have done some research and I have found the following, which may answer some of your questions. On the 1901 Census there is a Henry Waller, his wife Ada and children, all born Ditchling, apart from Ada who was born in Brighton. Their address was Harold Villas, PRESTON, Brighton. I found a marriage for Henry Lewis Waller in the June Quarter 1893 to Elizabeth Margaret Furness or Eliza Westwood. 1901 Census RG 13/1270 7 John? Enfield (I couldn't make out the address) Henry L. Waller head marr. 31 Picture Frame Moulding Salesman City of London Elizabeth H. Waller wife 28 Camden (Could be Elizabeth Margaret Furness, above)/ Henry L. Waller son 5 Enfield William F. Waller son 3 Enfield Florence E. Waller d. 1 Enfield. Kind regards, Anne in Bolton
Greetings to you all from a new subscriber. I am researching my Grand father Henry James Robert WALLER born probably 29th June 1901 as taken from his gravestone. I say probably because his marriage certificate dated 11th September 1919 says age 21 but I doubt I am the first person to be hit by the "of full age" problem, or just plain old lies. His father is listed on the Certificate as Henry Lewis WALLER a Picture Frame Maker. I have ordered a birth certificate for a Henry James Robert WALLER born in Hackney, London in the September quarter 1901, but the father does not tie up with Henry Lewis WALLER. The only other alternative is a Henry WALLER Born in Preston and registered in the June Quarter of 1901. I know it sounds strange but I cannot get any accurate information from living relatives as to if my Grandfather was born in Preston or in London ( I had always thought he came from the "East End"). Any help or suggestions before I order another Certificate? Phil Harris, Leigh on Sea, Essex

Hi, Pauline, You are interested in "my search for my Walmsley ancestors - many of whom lived in the village of Cottam, Chipping,Lancs.". First, Cottam and Chipping are two different places. Cottam was in the westernmost township of the Parish Of Preston, in the township of Ashton, Lea, Cottam & Ingol, whilst Chipping was/is an ancient mediaeval parish roughly six miles north-east of Preston. Both had strong RC communities. The best source of information about all RC registers in the north west is "Catholic Missions and Registers 1700 - 1880, Volume 5, North West England" compiled and published by M. Gandy, 2nd Edition, 1998 (ISBN 0 9528879 2 4). This gives details of all known registers, including those that were still with the Parish Priest in 1998. This shows that there is a burial register for St. Andrew, Cottam, from 1853 and this is one of the early Cottam registers that have been deposited in the Lancashire Record Office (LRO) in Preston. The very early baptism registers for this chapel to 1834 have been by the Catholic Record Society (CRS) in "Lancashire Registers, Vol. I, The Fylde, Pt. 1" CRS Vol. 15 (1913). There do not appear to be any transcripts of the Monumental Inscriptions (MIs) for the chapel of St. Andrew - the chapel is not listed on the Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society (LFHHS) site www.lfhhs.org.uk However, "Lancashire Graveyards & Burial Grounds" (Location, and Whereabouts of Transcribed Monumental Inscriptions) W.J. Taylor, 5th Edition, LFHHS, 2000 (ISBN 1 870277 03 1) suggests that the MIs have been transcribed by the Preston Branch. Perhaps someone knows if there is a copy available - at the Harris Library maybe. Very similar comments apply St Mary, Chipping, though in this case the MIs have been published on microfiche (C35) by LFHHS. The early baptism registers published by the CRS (Vol. 36, 1936) end in 1840, so the registers deposited in the LRO would need to be consulted, and there are gaps in these. The CRS volume lists the following WALMSLEY boys baptised in the period 1798 - 1802 13 Mar 1799 Gregory, son of Alice WALMESLY, sp. Thomas SINGLETON, Alice SALESBURY 25 Jun 1802 James, son of William and Ann WALMESLY, sp. Hello everyone, I am hoping that SKS may be able to help me. I am totally stuck in my search for my Walmsley ancestors - many of whom lived in the village of Cottam, Chipping,Lancs - The family were members of the Roman Catholic Church in Cottam - St.Andrews and my late father explained that in the churchyard are buried my Great Grandfather William born 1841, Chipping and his wife Elizabeth, also my Great/Gt/ Grandfather - born 1800 ? (unsure of his Christian name) - this is my stumbling block - I am hoping that a listing or name on his headstone may give me the breakthrough that I so desperately need. I would be grateful for any information as to where I may find a list of burials within the church grounds or indeed contact from any other Walmsley researchers who may be able to help. Thankyou for your time, Pauline, Devon.
Does anyone have a copy of Tales and Legends of the Upperward of Lanarkshire, Scotland, by D. Lockhart? It tells of a Vere or Weir family, and I do not know what else. The only copy in the libraries of Canada and the U.S. is missing. I hope someone will tell us of the Tales and Legends if they have a copy in their Library. I do not know if the British Isles has a copy which someone there can borrow. Hope some kind person can help, and tell us what D. Lockhart had to tell us.. If SKS knows of where else to make a successful request, I would appreciate hearing from you.
