Dear List, Have been doing a bit of 'surfing' lately and have come across an interesting site. http://www.picturesofengland.com/ Lots of towns, photos and info. Worthy of a look, I think. Especially for those of us who are overseas! Cheers, Faye
Hi All According to Mum there is an English Martyr in the family. As I have traced my tree back to William Ireland who married Alice Haydock 14 May 1832 at St John in Preston I believe George Haydock is the most likely. Especially as William was baptised in 1808 at Salwick and Lea RC, Lea by Kirkham and his father Thomas was baptised in 1785 at St Andrew RC, Cottam. I am supposing that Alice is somehow related to George and am interested in seeing if their is anything in the family story. If anyone has any more info about these folk please get in touch or if someone can point me in the right direction to finding the descendants of the Haydocks of Cottam. Regards Bill
I would appreciate it if someone could do a look-up in the 1851 census for the family of George Barnes, age 46, born in Longton, with wife Ellen, age 45, also born in Longton, and two children, Ellen, age 7, and James, age 11, (Ellen born in Preston, James in Longton). They resided in Preston. If there is a son Richard in this family, age 15, born in Longton, then I will have added another generation to our family history. Many thanks. Murray Johnson, Ontario, Canada.
I am trying to find out about my Iddon relatives in the Preston area. It has been found by another relative that James the son of John and Ellen Canal Street Preston was Christened 14th March 1821 at Holy Trinity Preston. I am trying to find a link with a John and Thomas Iddon. Thomas is my great great great grandfather and he married Alice Edge who was born in Tottleworth and then moved to Clayton Le Moors. Thomas was born in 1815/1816 and baptised on 21/1/1816. I think the Christening took place at Holy trinity Preston. I would be grateful for any help or any new leads on this family Best wishes to you all Michelle Iddon
Hi, Fran, I saw your note about Michael Gandy's book "Catholic Missions and Registers 1700 - 1880, Volume 5, North West England", 2nd Edition, 1998 (ISBN 0 9528879 2 4). This is the best book for finding the Catholic missions in the north west of England and for listing the registers and their whereabouts. Sadly from your point of view this book does not deal with the contents of the registers, though it tells you what transcripts/indexes existed in 1998. There are two main series of transcripts of Catholic registers in central and north Lancashire, the early volumes of the Catholic Record Society (CRS) and recent microfiche publications of the Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society (LFHHS). The CRS Publications were in the early years of the last century and cover most of the early missions around Preston and further north including most of Lonsdale (see http://www.catholic-history.org.uk/crs/index.htm ). These books are out of print, but some have been included in the IGI. The LFHHS publications (see www.lfhhs.org.uk >Shop>Microfiche) cover some of the Blackburn area and other parishes around Preston. The Preston registers have been deposited in the Lancashire Record Office (LRO) except for those of St. Wilfrid/St. Mary, for which there is an unpublished transcript in the LRO. There are also some microfiche published by the Liverpool & South West Lancashire FHS for Catholic parishes in Liverpool (see http://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/ ) Incidentally one of Marge SELF's earlier notes mentioned McCANNA. This is not a common spelling of this name in the Preston area, where it is usually rendered McKENNA. Hope this helps. Hi, Marge, I have seen some of your recent notes and they seem to start with a query about "John Joseph MCCANNA born about 1798 in Ireland. He married Mary SMITH about 1820 in Preston" which was very appropriate to this list. Then your queries moved to Cornwall which is in the south west corner of England quite a distance from Preston. Similarly this query relates to Bath which is only a little closer to Preston. If you look at Genuki ( www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/ ), go to "Gazetteers" and enter Bath, you will get a selection of places, use the down button.. It is probably the "Bath, Somerset" one you need, it being the largest place. There is a page relating to some aspects of genealogy for Bath. If you then go up to the Somerset page (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/ ), there are details there about the various family history societies that cover the area. Returning to the original enquiry about McCANNA, this name tends to be recorded in the Preston area as McKENNA so you need to be aware of this alternative spelling. However, the previous posting to the list from Fran Luby also relates to McCANNA. Hope this helps Jim Lancaster (Bury, Lancs.) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marge Seif" <moey.curley@comcast.net> To: <ENG-LANCS-PRESTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2005 4:02 AM Subject: James Toop & Anna Tether Toop

He married a Anna Tether and they had 3 children Isabella, Carrie and Emma. Any information would be so appreciated. Thanks. Marge (Maryland, USA)
Dear All, I'm wondering if anyone has a copy of the book; "Catholic Missions and Registers 1700 - 1880, Volume 5, North West England" by M. Gandy. And if they would be so kind as to look up the name, McCanna. I found it in Salt Lake Morman Library but I live in Chicago. Or if anyone knows where it might be located any other place in the US. Thank you very much. Fran

-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Barnes and Rosthorne Families Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2005 12:49:54 -0500 From: MJohnson <mmjohn5@bmts.com> To: ENG-LANC-PRESTON-L@rootsweb.com Richard Barnes and Elizabeth Rosthorne were married at the Parish Church, St. Johns, in Preston on 27 May, 1855. In the 1881 census they were living at 1 Beaconsfield Terrace and they had nine children at home. Elizabeth was probably the person in IGI born 17 August 1835 in Blackburn, christened 27 February 1836 at St. Pauls, Blackburn. Her parents were Ellen and James. Richard was born in Longton (from 1881 census), probably in1835, but that is all I know. Do any readers of this digest know anything more about the ancestors of this family? I would be grateful for some help. Thank you. Murray Johnson (Thornbury, ON, Canada).
Hi Thank you to John and Christine for helping me, with a BIG thank you to John for forwarding all the family data he has collected. There is a family link, but I have yet to go through it all. However, could I please ask if anyone can find Bartholomew Frederick COTTOM/COTTAM (or whatever other spelling!) on the 1841 census. He should be approx. 20 years and maybe a carpenter. He was tried at Preston on 2.12.1841 and later sentenced to 10 years transportation so he should still be in Preston when the census was conducted. Also would like the census details for his parents John and Mary Ann (from any of the censuses). Thanking all once again. Cheers Bevelyn (Australia)
Hi I am new to this list and hoping someone might be able to help me find the above's baptism. He was born about 1820-1822 in Preston, father John and mother Mary Ann (maiden name KEATING). John is listed as a weaver on Bartholomew's death certificate (1908 in Australia). I'm sorry but that is all I know. Any assistance very much appreciated. Cheers Bevelyn (Australia)
Hello Faye & List members, Thank you Faye for your kind offer. I would very much appreciate copies of the postcards of Preston. My Halliday ancestors hailed from Ireland but lived in Preston for a number of years from mid-1840s to 1857. The family moved within Preston and lived on Lodge Street, Hunt Street and Markland Street. My great-grandmother was born there in 1856, then the family emigrated to the U.S. several months later. The deaths of 3 children, including a set of twins, prior to the birth of my ggmother may have prompted their desire to emigrate. Thank you so much. Hi Fay, Greetings from the eastern seaboard. I would be very interested in viewing copies of your Preston postcards. My family roots are from Fishwick where four generations lived in a group of cottages (finally demolished in the 1930s) on the north bank of the Ribble immediately west of Walton Bridge.I have been collecting views of the bridge vicinity for several years and now have a largeish selection, view from the west, view from the east, view from the north etc and, a recent find, a tantalisingly small image of the nearest cottage to the bridge taken just before bridge widening and cottage demolition. My ideal photo would be one taken from the Bridge Inn on the south bank to the north and directly across the river. It is probably too much to hope that your cards illustrate this, but who knows? Hi Faye, Thank you very much for the postcards, they came through really good, they remind me of the time when I was young, we used to roll Easter eggs down the hill in the postcard. Thanks again Faye, Regards Tony.
