    3. Hi Christine, Many thanks for the welcome! I have also had a reply from Lynn with the same info and below is my response to her (as well as you!) Pat Hi Lynn, I don't think that this guy is mine because on the 1881 census, it says Charles was 23, born in Southampton, so I had a friend do an 1871 lookup for a Charles aged about 3, born in Southampton and she found a Charles with wife Elizah and son Charles, age 13, born Southampton. I believe it was the only Charles the right age that was born in Southampton. I have tried to find a marriage for a Charles English & Elizah to no avail! Elizah was born Liverpool, according to 1871 census and Charles Sr. was born in Preston, Lancs. As near as I can figure, by the ages of the four children on the 1871 census, they would have been married 1856 or earlier. The oldest child on the 1871 census was Elizah, aged 15, born Lambeth. Charlotte, age 9, & Harry, aged 7, were born in Marylebone, according to the 1871 census. I have the marriage certificate for Charles English & Caroline Holley and will shortly order the birth certificates for both to make sure the Preston family I am chasing is the correct one! Many thanks for the response. Pat

    3. Hello to all, In the 1841 Census my 3 x G Grandfather, Richard BALDERSTON, was living at CHADDOCK Street, Preston. I am given to understand that CHADDOCK Street is still in existence. My question is, would the present houses have been in existence in 1841? I was informed that it is a street of terraced houses but does anyone know how old they are? Any information would be gratefully received. 3. > > >Amongst our family "papers" is a marriage certificate between Mary EACHWORTH & John BARNES in 1868 (not researching BARNES at this point). They are my great grandparents and from that certificate and facts known to me about Mary I now have obtained copies of the birth certificates of Mary, born in Blackburn Jan. 15, 1849, and her brother William, born in Cuerden March 30, 1846, however the names are shown as EATESWORTH in both cases, not EACHWORTH. I wish to take it back further and find the marriage certificate between Mary & William's father Thomas EATESWORTH and their mother Agnes LAW(E) or perhaps birth certificates for Thomas and Agnes (or would that be jumping too soon)? My research which began as EACHWORTH is now EATESWORTH and I am thinking that this name is not rock solid either and could be leading to EASTWOOD or EDGEWORTH, for instance. Where do I go from here with look ups? > Hi Margaret, I found the following through my Ancestry.com subscription. I don't have much to offer as far as searching for a dynamically-changing surname but I did find birth, death and census info on your ancestors from the information you provided. England and Wales, Civil Registration Index: 1837-1983 Description: "On 1 July 1837 a civil registration system for births, marriages and deaths was introduced in England and Wales. Registration was undertaken by civil registrars who reported to the Registrar General at the General Register Office (GRO) in London, now part of the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Copies of anyone's birth, marriage or death certificates can be obtained by the public. They are vital to family historians because of the genealogical information that they include." (Mark D. Herber, Ancestral Trails, Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc., 1998) Since the original birth, marriage and death registers are not open to the public, getting access to the information on one of these certificates is done by first searching the national birth, marriage and death indexes, that have been created by the GRO for this purpose. The indexes for the three events are each divided into quarterly volumes, with the names for each quarter listed alphabetically. Once an entry in one of the indexes is found, you are then able to use that information to order of copy of a death, marriage or birth certificate from the GRO/ONS. The other information that can be obtained from the index includes: year, record type, quarter (March, June, September, and December), district (each county in England and Wales was divided up into registration districts), volume, and page number. Note: names were entered into the volume of the quarter in which notification of the event was received, not necessarily the quarter in which the event actually occurred. Extended Description: The massive task of digitising and, making searchable, the names contained in the GRO indexes has been underway for a few years now. This database is made available to Ancestry.com users, courtesy of the volunteers of the FreeBMD organization. The leadership of FreeBMD have organized the permissions and tools necessary to enable hundreds of volunteers to convert to electronic text, and publish online, searchable indexes to the civil registrations in England and Wales. FreeBMD, has already indexed more than 62 million names between the years of 1837 and 1983, and more names continue to be added everyday. Ancestry will add to this database as FreeBMD provides more names. It is estimated that more than 50% of the names between 1837 and 1900 have been indexed. Because of the nature of the index you will note that not all of the fields have been indexed all of the time. Until 1866, most of the indexes were handwritten, making the task of conversion sometimes difficult. Source Information: FreeBMD. 1. PASSPORT INFO
    2. Hello All I'm hoping someone will know the answer to this question. Is there a central place where passports were issued? My gr grandmother had her sisters visit her in Massachusetts on two occasions. In 1903 they came from Lancashire and in 1913 they came again but lived in Earby. Would anyone know how I could get a copy of a passport (hopefully with photo on it)? Were they issued locally, in London, and how much would it cost to get copies of these documents? Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks Pam Brooklyn NY USA

Are there any good information sources beyond the Rolls for information on Guild members such as their business activities? One of my family was an Alderman of the Guild around 1620. Rob Curedale
