Hi Mike Hebden Bridge is the town I grew up in. I know we Yorkshire lasses have been known to drop "aitches" so thought had better make the correction before it was lost forever! Hi, I'm searching for the Moss Family. I found one family that may match in the 1901 Census, But some ages and children are missing and would have been born by then. I have old letters from this family placing them at the Bank House 313 Prestion Rd. Grimsargh-Preston England. These letters are 30 yrs old and the family member that wrote them was 80 at the time of the letters. I would like to found the parents of this family. Here is what I have on them. There were 7 children in all Anne Moss- (Philomenia Martland's Mother) Mary Josephine (Polly) m. Arthur Hampson, children, Joe, Peter, Michael, Margret Marie Edith Moss m.? Breakell ---- Christine Breakell m. 1956-? Jean, Anne, and one daughter that became a nun name unknown Frank (for short?)Moss b. Oct. 1888, married abt 1920 to Else ?---Children--Vincent Moss m. Dorothy ?, Theresa Moss Henry or Harry m. Hilda ? emmigrated to Sharon Ont. Canada---No children mentioned Thomas Moss emmigrated to US, became a naturalize citzen in 1920's m. Nella Brahn I know that the family owned a ironmonger shop in Preston from 1888 to 1960's first run by the father than taken over by Frank and his family after father retired. The family sold the business in the early 60's to a company that own several shops in the area. Also, Peter and Michael Hampson were accountants for the company Freeman Rich in Preston in 1984. Any help on this family I would be grateful. Thank you Kathryne

I am sorry but Todmorden can be in either Lancashire or Yorkshire, Clayton could be Clayton-le-Moors near Accrington, so this site could also be the right one. Just a note, I am not after an argument over Todmorden, as a Lancastrian who came from nearby I consider, like other Lancastrians of the area, that Todmorden is in Lancashire, I have never recognised the border and never will I still go by the old County boundries. I accept that many Yorkists do not accept what I say. In the past the Yorkshire sign-post has been burnt down more times than I remember, all is recorded in the town archives. I wonder if SKS can help me with a problem. I have a Joseph DUXBURY who married in Preston in Aug 1898. His address is given as 20 Ancoats Cross, Manchester. I am trying to find him on a Manchester Directory to see if he is a tailor, in which case, he would be MY Joseph. I have been checked the 1895 directory at the Online directories site without success. I am hoping somene might have a later directory. My Joseph was in the U.S. for several years. He was back in Southport for the 1901 census. I tried posting a request to the Lancsgen list but it hasn't been posted. Thankyou. Vern in Ontario

Dear all, I am new to the Lancashire lists, but was wondering if SKS could help me out: On the 1871 census return for Bacup I have John Wilson aged 32 with his son Charles L N aged 6 and his other son Albert 5 along with his sister-in-law Mary M Hands 21. John was a widower who had married Elizabeth Hands (Mary's sister) at the end of 1864. Elizabeth herself died in 1870. John was born in Clapham, Yorkshire and I have traced his birth certificate back to 1843, with his father being George Wilson and his mother being Agneys Bateson. Does anyone have access to the 1841, 51 and 61 census returns for this area so that I can research the Wilson family back further, John would have been 8 and 18 on the 1851 and 1861 censuses, with his parents being George and Agneys. Also I am unable to trace Elizabeth's or Mary's births. On Elizabeth's marriage certificate it suggests that she was from Warrington and on the 1871 census return it says that Mary was born in St. Helens. I have checked 1837Online and cannot find any suitable matches for either. Does any one have access to the census returns for those areas for 1841, 51 and 61 as Elizabeth would be about 6 and 16 on the 1851 and 1861 censuses and Mary would be about 1 and 11 on the 1851 and 1861 censuses. I know this is a big ask, but if anyone is able to help with any of this then I would be very grateful, or perhaps point me to a list that might be able to help me further. Kind regards, Colin Pink Hampshire
Hello Lilian, I have looked in a B.T. Preston telephone directory for 1996 and I can't find anyone called Buchard or Bastock. There could still be families with these names, but they could have changed to another telephone company. You could write to the Register Office at Preston to see if they have a marriage certificate for Barbard Buchard who would probably have got married about 1965. If you provide as much information as you can, including her father's name, they will know they have the right one. I think they will look at 2 years on either side of the date you ask for. It will cost you £7. There is a man called Antony Lambert who provides a service of supplying certificates. If you do a 'Google' search using his name, you will probably find his website. I hope this helps, Kind regards, Anne in Bolton, Lancashire. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lilian and Morris Bowen" <lmbowen@copper.net> To: <ENG-LANCS-PRESTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 15, 2005 3:21 PM Subject: Looking for my cousin. Could SKS tell me whether there are parish registers available for Preston? If there are, and SKS has access to them, I'd very much appreciate a lookup for the birth of John Riley/ Reilly February 1821. with many thanks, Rosemary --
