    3. I am a very ordinary and new member of the Society of Australian Genealogists which I joined largely to acess their records for English and American family research and the bonus of Ancestry Plus access on their computers. I idly played with their CD which lists all convict shipping records but know that they have copies on fiche of shipping records, local censuses BMD registrations etc. Australian records are not my own interest but if you email your basic, and precisely phrased request to their HQ here in Sydney; info@sag.org.au you will be steered on from there, you may be lucky and get a 'look up' but bear in mind this is also the body which represents professional genealogists as well as amateur enthusiasts. There is no record of contraception being enforced on visitors to Australia or children being banned from being carried on boats so it entirely possible the children were born in Australia and came back to England. Not all people came to Australia as convicts or free settlers, quite a few were for specific tasks. The children's ages give a good bracket to search the quite extensive shipping records to and from Australia and if you think this is a family branch, you should be able to track down their Australian sojourn with perseverance. 3. Hi, Fran, You wrote > There are records to my knowledge but I'm not sure > where they are. I emailed the priest at St. Wilfred's > and asked if they had them or some other repository > had them but did not receive an answer. Roman catholic registers are private religious registers belonging to the parish for which they were created. As such they are managed by the Parish Priest at the time. The archivists for the three RC dioceses covering Lancashire recommend to parish priests that all the old Lancashire RC records are deposited in the Lancashire Record Office (LRO) in Preston for safe keeping. The only records that go elsewhere are those from the City of Liverpool parishes and these are deposited in the Liverpool record Office. However, the parish priest does not have to deposit his old registers in the LRO and the records of St. Wilfrid's and St. Mary's (one set) fall in this category. Most of the early records for the areas around Preston have been deposited in the LRO and much of them has been published in various forms. The records of St. Wilfrid's have been transcribed and a copy of the transcript (baptisms, marriages, and deaths/burials) has been deposited in the LRO and with the Catholic Family History Society in London. This means that it is possible to get the information you need - but that is not easy for you across the water. Perhaps there is someone on the list who would be able to check these transcripts. It is not too big a job because they are available in an index form. As for their marriage, have you looked at the IGI to see if the couple were also married in St. John's Church (the Parish Church - now Minster), Preston/ If they have it is possible that they were also married in St. Wilfrid's a day or so either side of that date. Hope this helps Jim Lancaster (Bury, Lancs.) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Fran Luby" <fluby@ameritech.net> To: <ENG-LANCS-PRESTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 09, 2005 6:18 PM Subject: Smith

    3. I'm tracing the McCanna family and one of them married a Mary 'Jane' Smith. John Joseph McCanna married Mary 'Jane' Smith in Preston in 1820. John Joseph McCanna, b. 1796 in Ireland d. 1874 in Illinois, USA Mary Jane Smith, b. 1800 in Preston, England d. 1875 in Minnesota, USA John joined the English Navy in Preston and that is how he met Mary Jane. They have four sons, Bernard, John, Thomas and Francis. All born in Preston. They left England about 1830 for the USA. I think they attended St. Wilfred Catholic Church, There are records to my knowledge but I'm not sure where they are. I emailed the priest at St. Wilfred's and asked if they had them or some other repository had them but did not receive an answer. That's all I know of the Smith's at this time. Hopefully, I will find their marriage someday. Fran

    3. Hi Peter, if you didn't receive the info re Preston Directory, I just checked and its on the link. Didn't quite understand your Gillett query or the way you phrased it. The part letter I have is just signed E. Gillett, I have no other connection with them than that. The thought that it may be Eleanor was just from an idle plunge into Family Search IGI and Family Search 1881 Census. Have you tried a search on Free BMD (no charge)and the Records Office 1901 Census Online (you can do the search without paying but have to then pay for details). You will find your people on the 1861,1871, 1891, 1901 Censuses on line also with Ancestry.com if you are a subscriber or in in a group subscription, if not try the two week free access, you can get a lot of info in two weeks if you plan ahead what you need. You will have provided your credit card details to enter the free access so you have to be prompt in pulling out within that two weeks, unless of course you find a subscription will give you further help, or face the annual subscription. Also try 1837 Online, this is a pay for view access to the entire GRO BMD Indexes by image, plus Lancashire and a few other counties 1861 Census however this is only five pounds for a bundle of basic search credits. You can download quarter indexe images for one credit per page and sort them out later from your Word or other file. If you want connecting details, send for a duplicate BMD certificate, this can now be done on line for less than by mail or agent ie seven pounds per certificate but be sure you have the right person most of us researchers have a bundle of right name/wrong connection certificates, good luck, Alan Potter

    3. You can find a host of Historic Business Directories at a site run by the University of Leicester www.historicdirectories.org Take some time to study the guide tips to using the various searches as individual towns are often hidden in broad county titles for instance to find the Preston Directory for 1828-29 enter Lancashire then scroll through the drop down lists until you find Pigot & Co's Directory of 1828-29 Part 1 Cheshire to Northumberland. Preston starts on image (and page) 435 of 624 total. With patience you will find others including the 'General and Commercial Directory, Preston, 1917. Highly recommended! 3. There is an 1830ish Preston Directory on line which I didn't bookmark but will hunt for if no one else provides it quickly. I have a part letter, undated, from E. Gillet, but 1870s I'd guess, regarding owed money and hard times. Refers to Mr G being out of work. I'd thought they were probably Thomas and Eleanor Gillet (nee Swarbrick) who, in the 1881 Census, were living at Grayton Street, Fishwick.
