I recently forwarded the following message to the list: *** > I wish to discover who was living at 51 Bridge Road, PRESTON, in 1917 and was > hoping that someone who might have access to a Preston Trade Directory or > Electoral Roll might be able to help. The address comes from a burial record > and is the address given "At Death" of Elizabeth HOTHERSALL. As this lady > lived most of her life and was buried at Clitheroe, Lancs. she was probably > living with relatives in PRESTON. > > Any help greatly appreciated. *** It was only afterwards that I realised that the year in question being 1917 there would be no electoral rolls or trade directories because of WW1. I have said that I believe that she was probably living with relatives and it would be a reasonable assumption that those presumed relatives would still be living there in 1918/19 when electoral rolls would be compiled onece more. So can I ask again that if someone is able to access the rolls or directories for the area, then they might look up the address for these years - or if not available perhaps the immediately pre-war ones instead - 1912- 1915. It is the presumed relatives that I am primarily interested in and I would expect them to be Hothersalls. I would be greatful for any information you could send me. If anyone has access to the 1871 census of Preston, Lancashire, I would appreciate a lookup. I need a lookup in the 1871 Census for Thomas WHITTLE Abt age 41 and wife Isabella Abt age 41. Also need any other Thomas WHITTLE age 59 or older, as Thomas age 41 father died before the 1881 census, and I don't have his age. Thank you! Happy Hunting! Hi Pauline, You mentioned Thomas and Hannah Anderton Wareing married in 1803 in Brindle. The early Registers of the Catholic mission at Brindle were published in 1922 by the Catholic Record Society, together with those of the neighbouring mission of Samlesbury (pronounced 'Sams bury' - not berry). I think the entries have then been entered in the IGI. Later Registers of this mission have been published on microfiche by the Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society (LFHHS) - see their website www.lfhhs.mcmail.com for detail and prices. The baptisms include two of a Thomas and Hannah at Brindle in 1803 and 1806, and then one at Samlesbury in 1808. There are also three at Samlesbury to Thomas and Diana in 1811, 1813, and 1815. It is possible that Hannah / Ann improved her name to Diana. Recent work has shown that these two missions served overlapping districts and that people did not always go to the nearer of the two. Two of the other queries relate to families in Preston after 1841. The Census Returns for Preston have been indexed by Surname and copies are available in the Harris Library in Preston (not of easy access to you). The indexes from 1851 to 1891 have been published on microfiche by LFHHS, details as above. The original Registers for St. Wilfrid's are still at the Church, but there is a transcript deposited in the Lancashire Record Office (LRO) in Preston - except for the years 1803 - 1813 which are lost. The early Registers of St. Augustine's to the early 1900s have been deposited at the LRO and when I last asked to look at them they were considered too fragile for public use. Hope this helps Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN)
Hi, Joyce, You wrote, > In the early 1920's in or around Preston, Lanc. there was an association > called "Thomas Sumner Secretary Weavers Assoc." It is very likely that this was the"Amalgamated Weavers' Association", a trade union, and that "Thomas SUMNER" was the Secretary of a Branch at the time, probably the Preston Branch. There was a Spinners' Association which was quite separate. In 1969 the AWA published a book "A History of the Lancashire Cotton Industry and the Amalgamated Weavers' Association" written by Edwin Hopwood. This is an account of the industry and, more particularly, the work of the AWA. Unfortunately it only names Presidents and General Secretaries and does not have an index. I think that the Lancashire Record Office in Preston has some copies of the annual reports of the AWA, but that is not of easy access to you. Hope this is of help Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN)
To all list members: The old timers on these lists will be bored by this, as we've been thru it many times, but some of the newbies are having real problems again, so here goes: If you have AOL 6.0 (and historically AOL and Rootsweb do not mix well anyway), you are currently not able to send emails to your lists, but you are getting other peoples mail, and are very confused. The problem is that AOL 6.0 is converting your letters into HTML format and Rootsweb servers bounce it. To correct the problem: 1. Type your email as usual. 2. Put the curser in the text box then right click the mouse 3. Click on "Select All" which highlights everything 4. Right click the mouse again 5. Click on text and then on normal 6. Left click on the screen to set it and then send It takes less than 5 seconds, but it works. I do not have AOL (don't want it either), and am passing this on to all my lists so that those of you that are can get back to posting and seeing your posts on all the email lists. Happy Hunting! Joyce, The families I am researching left Preston for America in the 1890's. Sorry I can't help you there. I am researching the following families: 1. descendants of Thomas and Hannah Anderton Wareing married in 1803 in Brindle 2. descendants and ancestors of John and Ellen Jackson Wilkinson married in April 25, 1847 at Chapel of St. Wilfred, Preston 3. descendants and ancestors of Noah and Catherine Holden (Holding) Cooper married about 1848. 4. ancestors of John and Elizabeth Schofield Eccles married May 17, 1864 in St. Augustine Church, Preston. I have my family tree out on World Connect. I welcome any information regarding these families. In the early 1920's in or around Preston, Lanc. there was an association called "Thomas Sumner Secretary Weavers Assoc." Does anyone have information about this association, especially the person Thomas Sumner? Any information at all would be greatly appreciated. Joyce (Canada)

Hi, Gail, In your message relayed to ENG-LANCS-PRESTON you wrote > My question is does anyone know of Fishpool Institution, Farnworth. > Believed to be a hospital. I'm form Bolton but have never heard of it, > neither had my cousin. The Fishpool Institution was the Workhouse of the Board of Guardians for the Bolton Poor Law Union. The Board of Guardians came into being following the Poor Law Act of 1834 and originally used the old parish workhouses. In the late 1850s they decided that a new Workhouse was necessary and purchased Fishpool Farm, Farnworth, from Cockey Moor Church. The Institution was opened in 1861. The farm later provided land for Bolton District General Hospital and the Workhouse later became known as Townley's Branch Hospital. BDGH has undergone considerable change and extension in the last 10 or so years and is now known as the Royal Bolton Hospital. The Bolton Royal Infirmary has been closed, the buildings demolished and the site redeveloped. A history of the establishment was published by Neil Richardson in 1989 - 'A Pauper's Palace, A History of Fishpool Institution' by Betty Connor. I have seen copies recently so you may be able to obtain one. If you have problems, contact me off list Hope this helps Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN)
Hello members I am a new lister and would be most appreciative of any advice/information of the newspaper likely to have the death details of my relative NELLIE BOLTON from Chipping Lancs who died suddenly on Thursday 22nd February 2001 and was buried at St. Mary's Church on the lst March 2001. (This is certainly very recent family history). Nellie has been most helpful with our Chipping BOLTON/HOYLE/WELLS ancestry and if possible I would like to get hold of the relevant newspaper. Would this be possible? - I would be quite willing to cover any costs and welcome any suggestions. Thank you, Patricia in Western Australia.
Hi List Greetings from Australia. I have been researching my family for many years but there is always something that is hard to find. I just saw this list mentioned on another list, and am glad to find others researching in the same area. I'd like to show my interests here. My mother was Agnes Mary Thompson nee Atkinson. Her parents and family came from Preston area: Her father: James Atkinson, b.18.3.1894, Preston; d.1963 Oswaldtwistle Her mother: Agnes Josephine Moxham, b.5.4.1893, Walton-le-dale; died 1969 in Australia. They married at St Marys in Oswaldtwistle, 1919. James' parents were Joseph Aloysius Moxham, grocer (1864-1936) and Mary Walmsley (c.1860-1900). Joseph's parents: Thomas Moxham, pavier/surveyor (b. c.1837) & Sarah Smith (b. c.1837) Thomas' father was another Joseph Moxham, also a pavier. I have been unable to find any of the Moxham family on either the 1851 or the 1881 census. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any information on this Moxham family. Mary Walmsley's parents were James Walmsley (b. c.1835), skinner, and Ann Baldwin/Boldwin, who married 1856 in Preston. James' father was also James, and Ann's father was Thomas Baldwin/Boldwin, greengrocer, of Walton-le-dale. My father's family came from Oswaldtwistle, and I have been having trouble going back more than 3 generations. Of course the reason is that the family name is Thompson, and there were many Thompsons around there so it is difficult to put the right ones together. My father is Ernest Thompson. His parents were Edward Thompson (1893-1950) and Hannah Catlow (1894-1959). Edward's parents were Peter Thompson (1850-1917) and Mary Ellen Robinson (c.1855-1911). Mary Ellen was from Glossop, Derbyshire, and I can find no information on her apart from her father's name, Thomas, a groom. Does anyone know if there is a Glossop list? My grandmother Hannah's parents were James Catlow (c.1857-1924) and Mary Ann Riley (1857-1915), of Oswaldtwistle. James' birth does not appear to have been registered, but as the family was C of E (was Immanuel church then in operation?) the baptism may be on record. Is anyone able to do a look-up? James' parents were Roger Catlow (c.1830-1882) and Nancy Whewell (c.1835-1903). James had at least 2 sisters, Ellen & Hannah/Anna I would also like to find when Nancy Whewell was born. Her parents were Robert and Ellen Whewell. I believe Peter Thompson was the youngest of 9 children of John Thompson (b.c.1806; d.?) and Hannah Storey (b. c.1807; d,?) living at Moor End at the 1851 census. If Oswaldtwistle is covered by this list (it is in the Preston Records Office area), and if anyone knows more of the Thompson-Catlow families, I'd also appreciate hearing from you. Thank you Linda Holland
