    3. I am hoping that there maybe family out there that will be able to help in my research. I am looking for the children/grandchildren/g.grandchildren of Abraham MELLOR and Martha Ann SAMSON/SANSOM. m: 25 Dec 1893, Preston. I believe their first son was Edward Harker Mellor b: 1894, Preston There were other children before my grandfather **Harry MELLOR b: 1910, Preston.** The youngest child is believed to be Ernest MELLOR b: 1912, Preston I have managed to trace the MELLOR family back to Thomas MELLOR b: abt 1820, Yorkshire. But my brick wall in the 1900's + I have been told that my grandfather had a falling out with the family and had little contact with his brothers and sisters. I am hoping that the contact can begin again. Hoping Gina Mair

    3. Hi, Eileen, You wrote > William BOLTON, last known address in 1891-1896 was 102 Wilbraham St. > Preston. Born in 1865 and married Mary Jane Devlin. This was my > grandfather, no other family information available. As you have an address in 1891, it is possible that someone can check the 1891 Census for you. It has been surname indexed by the Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society, and this can be purchased on microfiche. Details are available from their web site at www.lancashire-fhhs.org.uk NB two 'h' in fhhs. The 1881 UK Census has been transcribed by FHS volunteers and published on CD by the Mormons (LDS). I have checked this transcript for William BOLTON resident in Preston and for Mary J. DEVLIN resident in Preston, with the following results. Page I would strongly advise that you check these against the film of the original enumerators' books, particularly if you have access to an LDS Library, their film reference is quoted. The occupations that may not be clear (Cotton)Card Master At Mill - I think this person would be in charge of the carding engines in the mill. The cotton arrived as compressed bales, was opened and cleaned. Then it went through the carding engine to align the fibres to make it usable for spinning. Card Tenter Mill - operated the carding engine, 'tended' it Frame Tenter - operated a spinning frame, a continuous spinning process as distinct from the mule which was intermittent spinning. Shuttle Pipe Glazier(O) - I have not met this term before and cannot guess what he did. Cotton Weaver / Linen Weaver. - the different fibres were woven in different mills. My guess would be for the second William as being closer to the age you mention and more likely to associate with a spinning operative. Moor Park Avenue was (and probably still is) a very nice address. If you look at www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk you will find reference to a map of Central Preston ca 1909. I am not sure where Albion Street West is, but Essex Street is off St. Pauls Road which runs south to north to the west of the Royal Infirmary, and Wilbraham Street runs between Ribbleton Lane and New Hall Lane. You can buy these maps on-line. If you have access to an LDS Library, they may have, or will be able to get, films of the UK Marriage indexes and you could look for a Devlin marriage in Preston (Devlin being the less common name) and then see if there is a Bolton marriage with the same reference. I would GUESS that the marriage was in an RC church. I hope this helps. If anything is not clear, send me a note. Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN, ENG)

    3. Hi, Dennis and Joyce, How I agree with Dennis, particularly if he is talking about the 1881 Census Transcript on CD or fiche. If you find something on this version of the Census with which you are unhappy, then you must try to see a film of the original census books, NOT the transcript. The transcript was done by volunteers within the last 15 years, the films may be faint, handwriting has changed, and some of the names, place names and terms will be uncommon. Remember YOU are the expert on your family, rather than the enumerator or the transcriber. In the transcript, I have seen a lady over 80 years old described as an 'accountant', when it should have been an 'annuitant' another name for a pensioner, but no longer in use. Similarly, I have seen a place of birth transcribed as Bingley, a town in Yorkshire, when it should have been 'Ringley' a place no more than a mile from the census place. In both cases, the style of handwriting made reading today more difficult. Fancy capital letters can be very awkward. It is so easy to confuse STOTT and HOLT, and so on. Having said all that, the transcript is an absolute must for any seeking relatives in the UK who were alive in 1881, and the latest search engine helps use all sorts of ways to find them. However, Joyce's problem is not about mis-transcription, but changing forms of names. In the late 1800s the commonest form of the name she is interested in was ELLEN. As people sought to 'improve' their image it became HELEN. My sister in the 1940s, when addressed as Ellen, would say 'My name is HELEN, with a huh'. As well as the 'standard' form you will find all sorts of variants, Elen, Hellen, Ellie, Nellie, Tellie (from Aunt Ellie), Eleanor (in many spellings), and so on. I am currently looking for information on someone recorded in the Census as LIZIE, and elsewhere as ELSIE, I will not be surprised to find her somewhere as ELIZABETH, when someone has given her the 'full' name. Other variants of this name Elspeth, Betsy, Bess, Eliza, Lisbeth. I think the present Queen was known as a child as Lillabet. The other problem occurs with people with two given names, if they change the one they are known by. A 'John Michael' may be recorded on one Census as 'John, and on the next as 'Michael'. As I said, if you are confused by the Transcript, check the original. If the name is somewhat different but the family match, use your family knowledge and the knowledge of the names of the people you know to decide for yourself. If you are still not sure, look for other sources to help, birth or marriage certificate, church records, etc. Hope this helps Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN, ENG)

    3. Joyce: Don't believe everything that you see on the 1881 Census. My Grandmother's name was "Priscilla" - I have copies of her birth certificate, marriage certificate, death certificate and burial registration, my mother was named after her as she died as a result of the birth. In the 1881 Census she is listed as "IOUEN" - you can see this listed her surname was EASTHAM. A further error is that the father is shown as living at 11 Ripon Street, Preston (which was the correct address) but the rest of the family are shown as 7 Ripon St. Dennis [email protected] wrote: > Subject: > > ENG-LANCS-PRESTON-D Digest Volume 01 : Issue 30 > > Today's Topics: > #1 Re: Nellie [Violets <[email protected]>] > > Administrivia: > To unsubscribe from ENG-LANCS-PRESTON-D, send a message to > > [email protected] > > that contains in the body of the message the command > > unsubscribe > > and no other text. 3. Hi all, Just got back from holiday to a list of attachments about keeping the list active etc. As someone new to this list and to genealogy research I find myself unsure how to best use (and contribute to) the list! Any recommendations gratefully received! I guess I can also repost my research interests: CATTERALL - John (1836-?) married Bridget LAMB (1836-?) in 1856. children: Richard Henry (1860-1938), Herbert (??), Samuel (??). Richard Henry, a plasterer, apparently went to Sydney, Australia for 10 years in 1880s to make his fortune - cannot find any info on this - any ideas? SEED - Robert (1820-1860) married Jane TAYLOR (1822-1861) in 1844. children: Thomas (1846-??) Matilda (1855-??), Amelia (1848-??), John (1850-??), Samuel (1851-??), Richard (1853-1920), William (1856-1861). The Seed children were orphaned in 1861. Any ideas how we find out where they went? - were there official lines to follow in the event of both parents dying? Richard SEED married Ann.TOULMIN became printer and set up R Seed & Sons. TOULMIN - William (1821-1895) married Nancy Pomfret (1825-1896) in 1843. William son of John TOULMIN and Ann EMMET married 1810. Other TOULMIN children: John (1811-??), James (1815-??), George (1815-??), Michael (1819-??), ?Michael Emmet (1828-??). Toulmins set up Free Gospel church, Ashmoor St (?1853) after argument with pastor at Saul Street Primitive methodist Chapel and records for this church are not in Lancs Record Office. Any info about this church would be great - and any ideas where the records might be?? Toulmins may have originated in Lancaster in 1700s. One married a MILCAH POOLER in 1776 - anyone heard the name 'Milcah'? DOWBIGGIN - William (1820-1891) married Alice EGLIN (1830-1894) in 1851 in Westmoreland. children: Elizabeth (1852-??), Richard Eglin (1853-?1902), Mary (1855-88), Ann (1858-1918) married Richard Henry Catterall 1889, William (1864-1892), C. Dowbiggin???(on death certificate as informant). William was a plate layer on railway from 1850's to his death - seems to have moved a lot. Cannot find this family on ANY census!! Not on LDS 1881 index. Well that should keep things 'active' for a while. Hope I haven't overdone it!! Bye from rainy Harrogate Caroline

    3. Hi, Linda, You wrote about James ATKINSON and Alice SLOAN. With the sort of information you supplied, it should be possible to find your great-grandfather George (1863-1943) on the 1881 Census Transcript CD. The closest match in my view is - Dwelling: 27 Morgan St Census Place: Preston, Lancashire, England Source: FHL Film 1342012 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 4231 Folio 49 Page 1 Marr Age Sex Birthplace James ATKINSON M 31 M Preston, Lancashire, England Rel: Head Occ: Cotton Minder Ann ATKINSON M 44 F Preston, Lancashire, England Rel: Wife Occ: Cotton Winder Mary ATKINSON U 19 F Preston, Lancashire, England Rel: Daur Occ: Cotton Warper George ATKINSON U 17 M Preston, Lancashire, England Rel: Son Occ: Cotton Piecer Alice ATKINSON U 15 F Preston, Lancashire, England Rel: Daur Handicap: Deaf & Dumb Occ: Cotton Winder Ellen ATKINSON 13 F Preston, Lancashire, England Rel: Daur Occ: Cotton Winder James ATKINSON 12 M Preston, Lancashire, England Rel: Son Occ: Cotton Creeler Albert ATKINSON 8 M Preston, Lancashire, England Rel: Son 1881 British Census However, the father, James, seems to be rather young relative to the rest of the family and his occupation is rather vague - a cotton minder. I would have expected to be told what he minded. If you think this may be the family then I would strongly urge that you try to see a film copy of the original census document, rather than the transcript. I would suspect that the father James is really 51 and that he was a Cotton Winder. '3' and '5' can be very similar, and upper case 'M' and 'W' can almost impossible to distinguish in some hands. If you have access to the LDS (Mormon) Library service, they will be able to obtain the film for you - FHL Film 1342012, but you may have to explain that you want to see the original, NOT the transcript. 3. Hi List The above names and their antecedents are my mother's side of my family, all from Preston. HER father James ATKINSON (1894-1963) and his father George ATKINSON (1863-1943), and probably George's father James ATKINSON (born c.1840) all worked in the cotton mills in Preston. I'd love to know more about that. My g-grandfather, George ATKINSON married Alice SLOANE (1867-1930) in 1889. Alice's parents were Francis SLOANE (born c.1832) and Jane BAIN(E)S (born c.1832). Francis's, father Thomas SLOAN/E, came from Woolwich in Kent and married Elizabeth (surname unknown) in Preston about 1829. My grandfather James ATKINSON married Agnes MOXHAM daughter of Joseph MOXHAM (1864-1936) and Mary WALMSLEY (c.1860-1900). I cannot find a record of Mary's birth. She is the daughter of James WALMSLEY (born c.1835) and Ann BALDWIN (born c.1835) who married in 1856. I also cannot find birth or death dates for these either. James WALMSLEY's father was also James, mother unknown. Joseph MOXHAM was a butcher and grocer, and his father Thomas MOXHAM (born c.1837) was, I believe, a grocer. Thomas MOXHAM married Sarah SMITH in 1862. Thomas's father was another Joseph MOXHAM. The MOXHAM family have been particularly hard to find. Even though I'm certain they lived in or around Preston, neither Joseph's nor Thomas's families appeared in the 1881 or 1851 censuses. If anyone has any information on any of these families I would love to share what I have with you. Linda Holland in Burra, South Australia

    2. Hello, I a seeking information concerning Stephen Kehoe, my great grandfather. According to his death, certificate he was born in Preston, England in 1866. His parents were Thomas Kehoe and Esther E. Hargrove or Hargraves. He was a harness maker and could have learned his trade in the UK. He immigrated to the US and married Sophornia Boisvert (Greenwood) in Massachusetts in 1892. Any information or suggestions would be appreciated! I am not familiar with resources available to folks interested in UK genealogy. I have one more question, is there more than one location that shares the place name "Preston" in England? Thanks, Rich Burnham
