    1. BENNETT Family
    2. Pamela Sawyer
    3. Hi Listers, I am brand-new to this list so will give my surname interests in the hope they ring a bell somewhere. I am trying to trace the ancestors and descendants of my great-grandfather THOMAS BENNETT (183/4-?) who married MARGARET BAMBER (1833-?). Thomas BENNETT's father was RICHARD BENNETT, a farmer. Margaret BAMBER's father was WILLIAM BAMBER (1797-?) married to Margaret ? Thomas and Margaret had six children : Elizabeth Ann BENNETT (1833, b. Leyland) John Thomas BENNETT (1861-?, b. Leyland - I believe he died young) William Richard BENNETT (1865-?) b. Preston Annie BENNETT (1867-) Clara BENNETT (1868-) Florence BENNETT (1874-1825) I have details of this family from the 1861 and 1881 Censuses - they lived at 21 Lune Street Preston. Florence BENNETT was my grandmother, though I never knew her. She died before I was born. She married JOHN CLAYTON of Hazel Grove Cheshire. Thomas BENNETT was a watchmaker and jeweller in Preston. Family lore has it that Elizabeth Ann married a HENRY BAKER, and William Richard married a HARRIET ?; also Annie married a HENRY INGHAM. But I have, as yet, been unable to verify this at all. I hope someone can shed some light here. I have been floundering away for many months without much success. I do know there are many BENNETTS in Preston and that this was always going to be difficult to sort out, particularly from here in New Zealand. Pam Sawyer

    2. Jim Lancaster
    3. Hi, Andrea, You wrote, >Can anyone tell me if the 1851 census for Preston is indexed and if it is, would there be a copy in Manchester Library or would I have to travel to Preston?< There is a surname index to the Preston area in the 1851 Census, published as a booklet by the Manchester & Lancashire Family History Society (M&LFHS). You should e-mail [email protected] for details of availability, cost and postage. The M&LFHS covers mainly Manchester, Salford, Bolton and Oldham. Present day 'new' Lancashire, plus Bury and Rochdale, are served by the Lancashire Family History and Heraldry Society (LFH&HS). This latter society has published Surname Indexes on microfiche for the 1851 - 1891 Censuses and you will find details of these on the website www.lancashire-fhhs.org.uk Note fhhs A surname index is one which lists each surname found on that Piece of the Census and the folio numbers on which each occurs. It is a list of pointers, Surname and Folio numbers; it is not a transcription of all the information for every person. Hope this helps. if any thing is not clear, send me a note Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN)

    2. andrea
    3. Hi I hope I have joined the right list !! I am looking for my great great great grandparents WILLIAM HILLYER CALBREATH and MARY ANN FOSTER BIRKETT. They were married at the Parish of Deane in Lancaster in 1846. Their residence at time of marriage was Horwich. My great great grandfather, William Birkett Calbreath was born in 1851 and states on the 1881 census that he was born in Blackburn. However, his brother who was born the next year stated that he was born in Preston and Williams birth was actually registered in Preston in the September quarter of 1851. Can anyone tell me if the 1851 census for Preston is indexed and if it is, would there be a copy in Manchester Library or would I have to travel to Preston? Many thanks in anticipation Regards Andrea.

    3. I am currently trying to piece together my family tree but due to lack of persons living to answer vital questions, I am unable to gain much needed information. All records of my parents center around the lancaster area. Being Australian I do not understand the geographical setup of England, but during my research I have learnt that there are numerous counties etc. My mother, Constance Vera Rimmer was born 27 Nov. 1927 at 1 Derby Rd, Wesham & has Alice, Bernard, Doris & Mark as siblings. Her mother's name is Catherine and father is said to be Mark Royal. She married Kenneth Griffiths at St Pauls Church, Marton, 3 Dec. 1948. Kenneth was born 14 June 1928, at 2a Alexander Rd, Blackpool & has John, Joyce and George as siblings. Mother is Phyllis Nunn and father Robert Griffiths. I would appreciate hearing from any family members or anyone who has any relative information as to my heritage or any suggestions as to how I may obtain further information. Thank you.

    3. Hello it's me again. It has been pointed out to me by Brian Seddon that the posting I received and passed on to you concerning gravestones in an Irish pub was a hoax. I passed it on in good faith but now apologise for wasting everyone's time. 3. Hello all Lancashire listers. I don’t normally subscribe to these lists, as far as I am currently aware I have no ancestors from Lancashire but I received the following via the Leicestershire list and thought you should be aware what is happening to your gravestones: Below is the posting I received today: I am forwarding this article from a Belfast newspaper because this sickens me to my very soul and because I am currently involved in trying to save a Potter's Field here in Milwaukee County from desecration. It seems a losing battle, but we will fight to the very end. As far as this article is concerned, I can only say, I wonder how the proprietor of this establishment would feel if he came in and found his own family stones on his bar!? My next question is, who in England would allow these stones to be taken away for ANY purpose? There is no excuse for the landlord or for the one who released these stones. It seems too large a lot to be theft. Pardon my anger, but there it is and here's the article. Evelyn White Oliveras Quote: A Grave Matter OT 05/16/01 22:11 May 16, 2001 (WENN via COMTEX) -- An Ireland landlord has been criticised after installing gravestones on the floor of his pub. Customer Marguerite Sinnot spotted an altar carving behind the bar and then noticed she and her husband were standing on gravestones clearly inscribed with names and dates. When she later phoned the bar to complain, she was told not to worry because the gravestones were from Lancashire, England. BELFAST EVENING TELEGRAPH) Unquote Happy hunting to you all Betty. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.

    1. Re: Penninghame Leigh
    2. Jim Lancaster
    3. Hi, Carrie, You ask > Is there such a place as Penninghame Leigh in Lancaster? There are three places named in your question. Working backwards, Lancaster (as a name standing alone) is a City on the River Lune, in the north of Lancashire (or County of Lancaster). People often get confused between the city and the county. In your question, I think you are referring to the county. Leigh is now part of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, and Pennington (not Penninghame) is a smaller place to the south of Leigh. If you go to http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/ click on Gazetteer and enter Pennington in the Search box, you will get pointers to most of the information you require. The GENUKI site is a very useful and very comprehensive site for information about genealogical matters in the UK, but NO people information - just where to get. Hope this helps Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN)

They had a son Wilfred, thet then moved to Walmer Bridge, just outside of Preston to School Street, where they had 2 more sons. Any help on tany of these names would be much appreciated. Thank you J Johnson (nee Turner)
