Hi All, I will be viewing the Preston 1861 census . film # 543083, on Saturday 14th July, which covers roughly the south west of Preston ( I will be looking for Hudson Street.) I may have time to do a few look-ups if all goes to plan. So if anyone wants a look-up let me know within the next 2 days I will see what I can do. Cheers from NZ, Maureen
Sorry folks, somehow my reply to Maureen got lost. So I am re-sending it to you all. Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN) Hi, Maureen, I see you are going to be looking at the film of the 1861 for Preston. Did you know that the 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1891 Censuses have all been indexed by Surname and these indexes are available on microfiche from the Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society. Details on their web site www.lancashire-fhhs.org.uk Hope this helps Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN) ----- Original Message ----- From: "R Dunn" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, July 11, 2001 11:27 AM Subject: 1861 Census Preston. > Hi All, > I will be viewing the Preston 1861 census . > film # 543083, on Saturday 14th July, which covers > roughly the south west of Preston > ( I will be looking for Hudson Street.) > > I may have time to do a few look-ups if > all goes to plan. > So if anyone wants a look-up > let me know within the next 2 days > I will see what I can do. > > Cheers from NZ, > Maureen > > > > > > > ============================== > Shop Ancestry - Everything you need to Discover, Preserve & Celebrate > your heritage! > http://shop.myfamily.com/ancestrycatalog > > >

Hello All, Can anyone tell me when "Preston Street Directory" were first published. I was sent a photocopy of a couple of pages from apparently the 1948 directory. It lists the Street, House Number, Surname, Initial and occupation of main occupant. (e.g. SEDGWICK STREET, 40, McKerney, W, brcklyer) Thanks in advance Kathryn Adelaide, Sth Australia
Find out if Preston had a Vigilante Committee who came along and snatched children as Bolton had. Library possibly could tell you if there was. -----Original Message----- From: Larry & Beverly [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, June 30, 2001 5:05 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Fw: new subscriber Forwarding an email from a brand new member. I am new to this list so thought I would write and register my area of interest. I would be pleased to hear from anyone researching any of the following Preston families: Catterall, Seed, Toulmin, Dowbiggin. Also, does anyone know if children left orphaned in the 1860s had any documentation to indicate where they went - who took them in etc? Look forward to hearing - Caroline Hess ============================== Join the RootsWeb WorldConnect Project: Linking the world, one GEDCOM at a time. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com

Dear Listers, I would be most grateful if anyone over there has access to the 1851 Census (I am not easily able to get to a Local History Centre here). I am trying to trace the whereabouts of my great-grandfather, THOMAS BENNETT, in 1851. He was born in 1833 and is, I (almost) believe, the son of RICHARD BENNETT and MARGARET KELLETT, Richard being a farmer. A Thomas (aged 7) is with them on the 1841 Census. I have Thomas's residence on the 1861 and 1881 Censuses but am trying to trace where he was in 1851 (he doesn't appear with Richard and Margaret on that Census). Thomas became a "Master Watchmaker & Jeweller" and therefore he was possibly apprenticed in 1851 (aged 17). A very kind and helpful Lister has sent me an extract from the Preston directories for 1848 and on it there is, amongst the Watch & Clock Makers a Jonathan Simpson at 20 Lune Street Preston. Thomas Bennett married Margaret Bamber in 1855 and was at that time living at Grimshaw Street Preston. Thomas and Margaret Bennett were living with their family at 21 Lune Street on the 1861 Census and at 20/21 Lune Street on the 1881 Census. On the latter Thomas is described as a "Master Watchmaker & Jeweller Employing 3 Men & 2 Boys". Did he, I wonder, take over the business from Jonathan Simpson. Is there anyone who could trace Thomas Bennett on the 1851 Census given these clues? As ever, eternally grateful to the people on the List who usually come up with the answer! Pam New Zealand
I've just received a copy of the 1851 Gloucestershire census on CD rom. Its an absolute dream to search on and a lot of hard work has gone in to the compilation of this by volunteers. To do the whole of Lancashire would be by the sheer size of the county a very difficult project but is there any plans to do one covering Preston for example.? I know there is the surname index which is a very useful tool but I would be interested to know if there are any plans for a similar project for anywhere in Lancashire, particularly Preston. Please can anyone tell me how I would start to look for details of family who were in the Army during WW1. They all survived but died well before WW2. All I have are old photographs and their names and dates of birth. I also know their next of kin. Are these details enough? They would have probably joined up in Preston but then I'm not one hundred percent. Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gina Mair
Pamela: There is a gentleman by the name of Rod Neep at www.archivecdbooks.com who is producing old books and records on Compact Discs at an unbelievably low cost, he has a few books on Lancashire, with more to come. This may not help your immediate quest but just might prove helpful in the future. I have found it extremely difficult for expatriots to conduct research from the far-flung corners of the empire but another help is membership in the Lancashire Family History & Heraldry society, they have a Preston Branch. I wonder if there is anyone subscribing to this list who could look up the Preston Directories for me for the 1850s for watchmakers or jewellers, or both. My great-grandfather, THOMAS BENNETT, became a master watchmaker and jeweller in Preston. I know he was born in 1833. It is probable, though not as yet certain, that I have him on the 1841 Census aged 7 living in Preston with his parents. Those same parents appear in the same area in the 1851 Census but there is no Thomas, who would, of course, have been 17. I have Thomas's marriage certificate for 1855, again in Preston, but need to know where Thomas was in 1851. He may well have been apprenticed somewhere in the region. I live in New Zealand and cannot look up the Trade Directories myself. I would greatly appreciate any help. Pam

Hi Sylvia, Butchers Court has long since gone, around the mid 1950s, to make way for a new ring road through Preston. Going North up London Road you arrive at a big junction where Church Street crosses to Ribbleton Lane where Preston Prison is on the corner of Stanley Street. As you cross this junction there is a road bears left which is called Guys Row, Park Road. Park Road then bears right onto North Road at the Crest Hotel junction near the Preston Bus Station. An old directory, 1953, states that Butchers Court came in at 115 Park Road. Guys Row is still shown. Hope this helps and if you want a small map of this by email, just ask and I'll send. Best wishes, Lynn in Preston
Sylvia: I do not have an old street atlas of Preston but I have a fairly recent one and there is no Butcher's Court shown. There is a Butcher Brow but it is on the outskirts, south of town at Walton-le-dale so it is most unlikely that that is the place. Are you sure of the name, there is a Butler's Court in a well established part of town, almost in the centre but no Park Road nearby, as a matter of fact it is a cul-de-sac off Fishergate about 100 yards east of the railway station. There is a Butler Street on the east side of the station and a Butler Place just over a mile due north, close to a park but no Park Road in the area. Sorry to be so unhelpful. Dennis
