If everyone on this list would post their query, we would have a very active list. Need any information on Edward CARR, father of Isabella CARR b. bet 9 Apr 1830 and 9 Apr 1831. Hi, Pat, Of course, some of what you say will be boring. We all think we know it all except for the question we ask. Seriously, even if you answered the same question last week, there may be another new member of the list who is waiting for that information. To read someone else's explanation often makes me think about a topic and come to understand it better. That is certainly the case when I am almost sure I am right and have to check my statements before I post them. Putting in often means getting a lot out as well. Do reply to the list. If people find me boring, there is always the delete key!! Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN, ENG)
Hello Jim, I am afraid I am guilty of sending direct to the sender, and have just done so to Martin just letting him know that there is someone else on this great list, however I will try to reply to all in future, just so long as what I say is not boring to others????. Hi, All, I have just received the message from Martin. Just glancing at the list in the last two weeks there have been five queries, but NO replies. I suspect that some of these have been answered direct. It is surprising how much I learn by reading the replies to other people's queries when the replies are sent to the list as well as to the questioner. Perhaps members could consider using the 'Reply to All' button so that a copy of the reply appears on the list. I am sure we would all learn and maybe someone else will realise that they can add to the response and so to our common fund of knowledge. One other plea, can listers give an indication of where in the world they are? I guess that Martin lives in Australia and so it is not much use suggesting to him that he pops into the Harris Library in Preston to check the Census indexes. Hope this helps, Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN, ENG)
I feel the same way. I never see replies from others posts. I, also would like to see them. I learn from everything I read! Thanks. Martin, I was wondering if your Elizabeth Smalley was related to a Reuben Smalley, son of Joseph Smalley? Joseph was a warehouseman. My gg-grandaunt, Jane Wilkinson, married Reuben Smalley on 5 Mar 1859 at Independent Chapel, Preston. The marriage was witnessed by a Peter Smalley (brother of Reuben?) and Jane's sister, Mary Wilkinson. Reuben Smalley was born about 1833 in Blackburn and died on 6 Jan 1893 in Preston. He is buried at the Preston Cemetery on New Hall Lane. Thanks! How are you? Still busy at the LRO each week? I was going to ask if Samual SUMNER married Elizabeth SMALLEY at this church in the Mar qtr of 1862, but typically your fiche does not start for another 2 years. Maybe someone else on the list can see this marriage record somewhere in the Preston registration district? He was a Boer War Veteran , Loyal North Lancashire Regiment , Reg.No. 5515 . William REEVE was Mary Janes 2nd husband , her first husband being a DAWSON . I think he was killed at war . Anyone with any knowledge of these family's , I would love to correspond with you . Thanking you Lucy Hunter (Western Australia)
Hi everyone, I am desperately trying to locate more information for my brother in Law's father, Llewellyn Williams now aged 82 and very poorly. Llewellyn's dad died aged 37 in 1921 at 177 Station Rd Bamber Bridge three weeks before Llewellyn was born. I have the death certificate. Llewellyn's dad was Abram (Abraham) Williams and is supposed to have been born in Mostyn N.Wales but there is no record of him there and the 1891 census does not record him either. His wife Ester Hannah (Liverpool origins) brought up the family on her own in Bamber Bridge, Walton Le Dale and died in Chorley aged 80. The family now live in Kent. Other children were Est(h)er, Ronald Albert (both died young), Abraham(known as Arthur), May(went to Canada with husband Alan Lott?) David, Elizabeth(Betty), Ada and finally Llewellyn (second name Culton?) The latter two were boarded after Abram's death at the Harris Orphanage, Preston? I just wondered whether anyone had come across the family or could advise me how I might track down Abram's birthplace if it wasn't Mostyn. In other words what documentation might his birthplace be mentioned? I know he served in WW1 but there is no known Service number. Any comments at all - most welcome(urgently). Anyone researching FAZACKERLEY from Broughton/Whittingham, Near Preston
Preston Library does have Electoral Roll books from the 1880s onward although omitting the War years. These at least list family members old enough to vote and may help someone till the 1901 census is released. Lynn in Preston
Hi, again, OOOOPs! I forgot to mention that there is a 100 year closure rule on UK census information and that the 1901 Census will not be available until early next year. It will be available on the internet on a 'pay-to-view' basis. I think details are available on www.pro.gov.uk Sorry if I raised anyone's hopes Jim lancaster (Bury, LAN, ENG)
Hi, Patricia, The English Censuses have been taken every 10 years since 1801, except for 1941. However, the first one of any use to family historians is the 1841 Census, and the first one of real use is the 1851 Census. The 1881 Census is the only one that has been transcribed in its entirety, and is now available on CD. Much but not all, of the 1851 Census has been indexed by surname. Some of the other years have been indexed, etc., but it is very hit or miss. You are fortunate in that all the Census returns for Preston have been indexed, except for 1841. These can be obtained from the Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society and the details can be found on www.lancashire-fhhs.org.uk The indexes give the surnames and the folio numbers on which they appear. You will need to remember that there are two sides to a folio. If you find the names you seek you can then order the film of that Piece from your local LDS FHC. Hope that helps Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN, ENG)

Is there such a thing as a 1871 Census?? I am looking for the Singleton Family, James, Letetia and John (b. 1864). I would love to know if he had siblings. By 1881 he had a child (John) of his own, don't know the wife - still searching. Thanks.
I am seeking info on George Gowing born 1863 in Kirkham and his wife Mary Teresa Garrett. I have oral history that says they ran an Inn near Preston which was a "comfortable days coach ride from the city." But business suffered with the advent of the motor car and they sold up and moved on. Any info would be gratfully recieved. Dave from Down Under.
Hi, Dave, You asked about > George Gowing born 1863 in Kirkham and his wife Mary > Teresa Garrett. I have oral history that says they ran an Inn near Preston I have checked the 1881 Census Transcript on CD without success. This uses a Soundex system for searching and so should have found slight spelling variants. Are you sure of the dates for George? Hope this helps Jim Lancaster (Bury, LAN)
