Jim et All, I have found contacting the Harris Library at Preston very helful for finding people in the 1891 census. They have a name index and can point you to the right fiche. They may even be kind enough to check the fiche for you. Martin in Sunny Sydney -----Original Message----- From: Jim Howarth [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, 6 August 2001 11:07:pm To: [email protected] Subject: Howarth's of Longton and Preston Hi everybody, I am trying to trace a Mary Ann Howarth and a Frederick Howarth. They probably had three daughters, Ellen born 1888, Alice born 1893 and Hannah born 1895. If anyone has access to the 1891 census I would appreciate a lookup. Does anyone know if the 1901 census is available yet? ============================== Search over 1 Billion names at Ancestry.com! http://www.ancestry.com/rd/rwlist1.asp IMPORTANT NOTICE: This e-mail and any attachment to it is intended only to be read or used by the named addressee. Hi, Martin, You mention the Harris Library and fiche. I think this item about fiche falls into the group that is often dismissed by the comment 'Oh, everyone knows about that'. The Harris Library has had some superb support from locals and ALL the census films, 1841 - 1891, have been indexed by surname for the Preston area. These indexes are available in book form on the open shelves in the Library. Not much good for me, says you Martin, from Down Under. However, surname indexes to many of the Censuses for several of the Lancashire towns are available on microfiche from the Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society (LFH&HS). Details of this Society are on its web-site www.lancashire-fhhs.org.uk These are only surname indexes. For each Piece of the Census, they tell you what surnames are recorded and on which folios they occur (a folio is a leaf of the book comprising two pages, front and back). They do not normally tell you forenames or any other information. For the full information you use the reference to find the entry on the Census. The Census were originally supplied to Libraries on microfilm, but the 1891 Census was also available on microfiche. Some of the earlier Censuses are now available in that form as well. These film or fiche copies are photographic copies of the original enumerators' booklet showing all the vagaries of the original, surnames in the same household with different spellings, etc. I understand it is possible to obtain access to these film copies through your local Mormon Family History Centre. The LFH&HS page also lists its other publications on fiche. These include copies of various baptism, marriage and burial registers and of monumental inscriptions. These copies are usually in some sort of tabular form to enable manipulation on a computer. They are not usually precise word for word transcripts as the one I quoted the other day from the Catholic Record Society for John WILKINSON. Remember, if the event is a key event in your family, then try to see a copy of the original Register to check the transcription. Many of these LFH&HS fiche have been prepared from filmed copies of the Registers, but for some the work has been done from the original Register with the co-operation of the Church concerned.
Hello Lucy, I have the fiche for Marriages at All Saints, Preston - 1864 to 1943 if you need a look up in this period. Lynn in Preston
Hi, Lucy, You wrote > Does the All Saints Church still exist , and where may I get any > information on said church and the marriages performed there so long ago . I am not sure if All Saints still exists. It did in 1985 when a book 'Preston Churches and Chapels' by T.R. Flintoff was published by the Carnegie Press. This books gives details of over 100 places of worship in the Preston area. There is about half a page describing the church of All Saints. 'Finding Folk' 3rd Ed, Lancashire Record Office, 1998, - the guide to the church records in the LRO - states that it has the original Baptism Registers 1848 - 1929 and Marriage Registers 1864 - 1943, and that microfiche copies of these to 1900 are available on open access. Hi, Pauline, You wrote > Another factor with all of these folks is that they belonged to the Catholic > church. Sometimes they seem to be more difficult to find! Agreed, but the first port of call is a list of Catholic Registers. One has been published by the Society of Genealogists, but this refers us to a fuller book - Michael Gandy, "Catholic Missions and Registers 1700 - 1880" Vol. 5 North West England 2nd Ed. 1998 (ISBN 0 9528879 2 4). This second book lists all known Catholic registers in missions founded before 1880, including the registers that are still with the Parish Priest. > Brick wall #1: > > John Eccles born about 1831- 1834 in Preston. Father: George. Mother's name unknown > Does anyone know how I can find a birth or baptismal certificate for 1831-1834 > time frame? There was only one RC chapel (St. Wilfrid / St. Mary)in the town of Preston at this time, though there were many within about ten miles. The second chapel (St. Ignatius) was only opened in 1836. As you say elsewhere, one (?) of the Baptism and Marriages registers has been lost, but this is only for the period 1803 - 1813. All the other Registers are in the keeping of the Parish Priest at St. Wilfrid's (St. Mary's has been closed and the building demolished). However, these registers have been transcribed (it is probably not a literal transcript as mentioned under Brick Wall #3) and a copy of the Transcript is in the Lancashire Record Office (LRO) in Preston. Not very accessible in Florida, but perhaps someone can get to Preston for you. > Brick Wall #2: > > John Wareing and Agnes Greenwood were married about 1861. The registers of St. Wilfrid / St. Mary have been explained above and the transcript is in the LRO. I am assuming that they were RC as there is an Anglican St. Mary Church on the east side of the town about half a mile from the town centre and between New Hall lane and Ribbleton Lane. If they married ca 1861 you should be able to find a reference in the General Register Office Indexes (GRO Index, St. Catherine's House Index) and this will probably be available through your local LDS FHC. If you find a reference, the full reference is needed to order a certificate from the National Office, but the volume and page numbers will be meaningless to the Preston Office. You should be able to obtain a civil Birth Certificate for Agnes GREENWOOD from the Preston Register Office. I think that is the office but if you write to them ask them to forward your request to the appropriate office if they do not have the records for Longridge. You will be able to check the Register Office details via www.genuki.org.uk/big/LAN > Brick Wall #3: > > John Wilkinson was born in Larbrech about 1825 according to the 1851 census. Denis suggested the possible churches in the area. The records for the early period for the Catholic mission at Great Eccleston have been published in 1913 by the Catholic Record Society and, I believe that they are available on film through the LDS system - I am NOT sure. However, I have a copy and there is an entry for a John WILKINSON that reads Die 7 Maii baptizavi Joannem WILKINSON pridie natam ex Elizabeth WILKINSON. Patrinus fuit Thomas BROWN, matrina Helena CLARKS. This translates approximately as On 7 May [1825] I baptised John WILKINSON born the day before from Elizabeth WILKINSON. God-father was Thomas BROWN, god-mother Helen CLARKS. The priest at this time was Henry PARKINSON. I am not saying this is YOUR John, you will have to sort that out. Jim, Thanks so much for taking the time to answer each of my brick walls. You have given me much food for thought and roads to travel to eliminate these brick walls. You must have quite a genealogy collection! If I could get to Preston, I am sure I would have to spend two weeks in the records center. That doesn't count the time waiting for a viewer! Thanks again. Hi Richard and all, To the group, you should know that Richard and I may be related through the grandfather of his Henry Greenwood. My brick wall with Agnes Greenwood Wareing's marriage certificate would prove this connection. Can any body give us an update on the status of the 1901 census of England? I understand it is going to be put on the internet and we'll have to pay to use it, I am just looking for a timeline. Pauline W. I have hit a brick wall and need some help. The 1891 census lists Henry as one year old. He was baptized at Preston Emmanuel Church of England Church on July 11, 1889. He was probably born in late May or during the month of June in 1889 as he was not quite two years old during the census of 1891. His father was William Henry Greenwood and his mother was Mary Jane Harrison. They lived at 58 Emmanuel Street in Preston. As far as we know, he had one sibling, Ann Jane Greenwood who was born September 6, 1897. She married Herbert Coupe in Preston Emmanuel Church on September 4, 1922 and immigrated to the USA in March 1923. Any further information concerning Henry Greenwood will be greatly appreciated. Dennis, Thanks for that information regarding the churches that were tied in to Larbreck. Our FHS has some films for these so I'll check them out. Hello , I am seeking any information on the BURKE family eg. John BURKE and his wife Henrietta (nee GREEN ) I believe the GREEN family lived in Preston in the 1800's and when John and Henrietta returned from India where John had been serving in the army they returned to Preston to live . One of their daughters Mary Jane BURKE married a ? DAWSON , I believe he was killed (army) . She then married a William Thomas (Peachy) REEVES in the All Saints Church in Preston in 1908 . If anyone has any information on these family's I would be over joyed as I seem to be at a stale mate . Does the All Saints Church still exist , and where may I get any information on said church and the marriages performed there so long ago . Thanking you for taking the time to read my email . Regards -------------Lucy
Dear Listers I haven't been posting to the Preston list for some time as the LANCS list has been very helpful. However there does not appear to be anyone there who can help me with my ATKINSON quest. Thanks to the kindness of a LANCSGEN lister I have a possible church in Preston to look for my grandfather's sisters and brother who died as infants when their babysitter overdosed them with laudanum. (They lived at Lutwidge St in 1891). I'm hoping that someone has access to the records of St Joseph's RC church, Skeffington Rd, Preston (held at GRO Preston?), and can look for baptisms and deaths for: 2 baby girls, both named Ann one baby boy named Francis: Parents: George ATKINSON and Alice Sloan Dates approximately 1890 to 1893. My grandfather was born in March 1894 and was the oldest surviving child. I believe that these three children were born before him. Other children born later were: Bertha about 1895 (don't know date) Frederick b.27.12.1898 Ethel b.6.10.1903 I've been looking for these children, Ann, Ann & Francis, for some time and hope that someone will be able to help me with this at last. (If you find my Aunty Bertha's birth that would be great too!) TIA Linda Holland in country Sth Australia
Thought I would join in and repost my Preston names. DESMOND - all references BRADSHAW - Elizabeth born 1885 parents Thomas BRADSHAW & Isabella ASHWORTH Clare Woodward
Pauline: Your Wilkinson (1825) should be in the records of the RC Parish Church - Gt. Eccleston the Cof E Parish Church was at St. Micheals on Wyre but there was a Chapelry at Copp, there was also a Methodist Chapel in Gt Eccleston and a Wesleyan but I am not sure when they started up. Depending upon whereabouts in Larbreck your man lived it might well have been closer to home for your man to be recorded in (Gt) Singleton which was a Chapelry of Kirkham. Dennis >
Hi Everybody, I'm taking the hint and once again posting my interests. I really need 1891 (or post-1881 Census) information about my grandmothers's family in Preston. In 1881 the family consisted of the following : Thomas BENNETT (Head) (47) Jeweller & watchmaker Margaret BENNETT (nee BAMBER) (Wife) (48) Elizabeth Ann BENNETT (Dau) (22) William Richard BENNETT (Son) (16) Clara BENNETT (Dau) (12) Florence BENNETT (Dau) (8) (My grandmother) They lived at 21 Lune Street Preston and were all born in Preston. I know 21 Lune Street no longer exists (it was one of the houses demolished to make way for the ring road) but the family had lived there since Thomas and Margaret's marriage in 1855. There was also another daughter, Annie, who was away at boarding school at the time of the Census. My grandmother Florence, whom I never met as she died before I was born, married and had her first son in 1896. I wonder if some extremely kind person who has access to the 1891 Census would be able to find out something about the BENNETT family at that time. I have tried several avenues to get information on all the children but with little success. I believe (with no proof as yet) Elizabeth Ann married a Henry Baker of Liverpool and that Annie married a Henry Ingham of Preston who was a solicitor (though, as yet, no proof of that either). I know for definite fact that Clara remained a spinster, but know nothing at all of William Richard. This is a family I am now really trying to get to grips with. If any of this rings a bell with someone, I would be very grateful indeed to have the information. I have 1851 and 1861 Census information that has been a great help but the family remains fairly mysterious in later times. I had a letter this morning from some very kind people in Australia who had been to their local LDS Centre and found the reference pages for Lune Street on the 1891 Census but couldn't find any Bennetts. The pages were very difficult to read but the references were : RG12/3441 En. no 12 RG12/3442 En. no 16,17 RG12/3446 En. no 4 This is, of course, just in case anyone should be looking.....! :) It isn't easy for me to get to the nearest LDS Centre, and that's why I'd be so grateful for any help. Surely there must be someone still living who has some distant connection with the family? My grandmother's marriage took her to Cheshire and that is where the rest of my family is. After she died there appeared to be little further contact with the Bennett family in Preston. Sorry about the length of this letter. It probably falls into the "boring" category. But it means a lot to me! Pam New Zealand
Thanks Joan. I do know there was a lot of Starkies, in the Clitheroe, Pendle,Whalley Area, also Padiham & Burnley, it it's certainly a popular named in the Lancashire area. Thanks Again Toni
Hi Jim and other Listers, O.K. I'll jump on the bandwagon while we're all at it and post my interests! John POOL b 1828 in Annan, Dumfries Rose-Ellen, his wife children: James, Susanna, Jane, George( my grandfather), Anthony and wee Rose-Ellen. He took his family from Scotland to live, first in Blackburn C1852 /3 then Preston C1856 until they returned to Annan C1875. I found them living in Hudson Steet, Preston in 1861, John POOL was a draper, journeyman. Hope to find them on the 1871 census (wheneve I have time to order it.) Meantime I'm just interested in finding out about health, schooling and conditions in those days in Preston. Best Wishes from first-signs-of-Spring in New Zealand, Maureen Dunn ( m.s.POOL)
