I have an ancestor Elizabeth Sharples (DOB c. 23.3.1818) and her illegitimate son, James Sharples (DOB 2.3.1841), who, in the 1851 Census, were in the Wigan Workhouse. I cannot find them in the 1861 Census, but James reappears in the 1871 Census. Does anybody have any experience in tracing their ancestors while they were in the Wigan Workhouse e.g. their arrival and departure dates etc? I would also be delighted to hear of any suggestions to help me trace them between 1851 and 1871. Norman Sharples.
